CAT SCRATCH DISEASE Sadie age 10 months This is a problem that everyone has heard of, and is concerned about, but in actuality, is rarely seen. The incidence runs about 2 or 3 per 100,000 population the USA,[ or affects 2400 people annually ]. The proper name for it is benign lymphoreticulosis, but is commonly called either ‘cat scratch fever’ [CSF] or ‘cat scratch disease’. [CSD] Cats that carry this disease are rarely ill themselves, so you really don’t know if you will become ill after a bite or a scratch, unless its your own cat and it is totally an indoor cat. You notice that there may be a problem 5 -50 days after being infected. This is one reason it could be missed, as people tend to forget they petted a cat 6 weeks before. It starts with a typically small lesion that looks like a mosquito bite. This is followed about 10-14 days later with swollen lymph glands, and this can hang around for several weeks or even months. It is rarely a severe illness for most people, but if you have a compromised immune system, such as people with HIV or chronic illness, then you should seek medical help when you are injured. You should also seek medical attention if you suspect you have this illness, because it has been linked to other problems as a complication [albeit rarely]. These include hepatitis, tonsillitis, pneumonia, arthritis, conjunctivitis and even convulsions and confusion in susceptible people.

Arlet G; Perol Y; Service de Bacteriologie-Virologie, Hopital Saint-Louis, Paris,; France. Abstract: Cat-scratch disease is a benign inoculative lymphoreticulosis, related to the presence of a polymorph bacillus, Warthin-Stary silver stained, Gram negative as assessed by Brown-Hopp staining. It is found in the capillary walls and in macrophages bordering the lymph node sinusoids at the site of inoculation, in regional subacute adenopathy before softening, in internal organs and blood cultures of systemic infections, occurring more often in immuno-compromised patients. These bacteria have been demonstrated in subcutaneous vascular nodules, near to histiocytoid hemangioma in AIDS patients; these lesions are very similar to early stage Kaposi's sarcomas. This bacteria is provisionally listed as G 1492 by the Center for Disease Control. Keywords:

Summary Top Summary Introduction Granuloma formation Classification References Granulomatous disorders comprise a large family sharing the histological denominator of granuloma formation. A granuloma is a focal compact collection of inflammatory cells, mononuclear cells predominating, usually as a result of the persistence of a non-degradable product and of active cell mediated hypersensitivity.
