      Overview
To Learn More About This Topic: Chat with Us Email Us Lymphoma is a general term for cancers of the lymphatic system - an important part of the body’s immune system that fights disease and infection. About five percent of all cancers in the United States are lymphomas. There are two types of lymphoma: Hodgkin’s disease is one of these two types. All other types of lymphomas are considered non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), and will be discussed here. According to the National Cancer Institute, since 1973 the incidence of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in the United States has increased about seventy-five percent—one of the largest increases among major cancer sites. NCI has estimated that about 1 in 52 men and 1 in 61 women in the United States will be diagnosed with NHL during their lifetime. Part of the increase in NHL incidence in recent years is a result of the AIDS epidemic: NHL is sixty times more common among AIDS patients than in the general U.S. population. Herbicides and insecticides have been linked to risk for NHL in studies of farmers, pesticide applicators, and other occupational groups exposed to high levels of these chemicals. An NCI study found that contamination of drinking water with nitrate, a chemical found in fertilizers, may also be associated with an increased risk of NHL, particularly in agricultural areas.

June 20th - 3rd Anniversary of David's passing - Forever in our hearts... Forever on our minds Welcome to our Memorial home page dedicated to our son and brother David. We are the Schneider family, living in Southern Ontario, Canada. Let us introduce ourselves. Joyce Schneider is a high school teacher of Drama and Performing Arts. Her spouse, Michael, is a teacher in the same school, head of the same department, and teaches English as well as Drama and Performing Arts. As you can see, we have absolutely nothing in common! Our beautiful daughter, Mary, is 16 years old. She is an accomplished dancer and baseball player, loves acting and singing, and is now finishing grade 11 at her mom and dad's school, and loves it. Our boy David passed away on June 20th 1998 after a long and struggle with non-Hodgkin’s’ lymphoma at the age of 11. This Web sight was intended in part to be a celebration of his life and we are grateful that he was able to participate in its creation. It is our David who greets you when you click on the " Cat Gallery " link, along with his beloved Butterscotch; it was recorded just 4 days prior to his passing. We have a separate page detailing David’s

Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma Becomes
More Common, More Treatable
by Margie Patlak A relatively unknown yet deadly cancer has become more common in the last few decades and is now the sixth most common cancer in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute. This cancer of the immune system, known as Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), became more familiar to the general public as it struck such luminaries as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Senator Paul Tsongas, and the Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlevi of Iran. NHL has increased 75 percent over the last 20 years, making it the most rapidly rising cancer after lung cancer and melanoma, NCI says. The incidence of NHL increased from 8.5 per 100,000 people in 1973 to 15.1 per 100,000 in 1991, and mortality from the disease increased from 4.8 per 100,000 people in 1973 to 6.5 per 100,000 in 1991 (illustrated in a 138K PDF file ). Although recent studies have provided some intriguing clues, the cause of what some experts call the "NHL epidemic" is not known. (See accompanying article.

This cancer treatment information summary provides an overview of the prognosis, diagnosis, classification, staging, and treatment of childhood non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL). The National Cancer Institute provides the PDQ pediatric cancer treatment information summaries as a public service to increase the availability of evidence-based cancer information to health professionals, patients, and the public. These summaries are updated regularly according to the latest published research findings by an Editorial Board of pediatric oncology specialists. Cancer in children and adolescents is rare. Children and adolescents with cancer should be referred to medical centers that have a multidisciplinary team of cancer specialists with experience treating the cancers that occur during childhood and adolescence. This multidisciplinary team approach incorporates the skills of the primary care physician, pediatric surgical subspecialists, radiation oncologists, pediatric medical oncologists/hematologists, rehabilitation specialists, pediatric nurse specialists, social workers, and others in order to ensure that children receive treatment, supportive care, and rehabilitation that will achieve optimal survival and quality of life. Refer to the PDQ Supportive Care summaries for specific information about supportive care for children and adolescents with cancer.

Note: Separate summaries on AIDS-Related Lymphoma Treatment Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma Treatment , and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma During Pregnancy Treatment are available. Non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas (NHLs) are a heterogeneous group of lymphoproliferative malignancies with differing patterns of behavior and responses to treatment. [ Like Hodgkin’s lymphoma, NHL usually originates in lymphoid tissues and can spread to other organs. However, NHL is much less predictable than Hodgkin’s lymphoma and has a far greater predilection to disseminate to extranodal sites. The prognosis depends on the histologic type, stage, and treatment. The NHLs can be divided into 2 prognostic groups: the indolent lymphomas and the aggressive lymphomas. Indolent NHL types have a relatively good prognosis, with median survival as long as 10 years, but they usually are not curable in advanced clinical stages. Early-stage (I and II) indolent NHL can be effectively treated with radiation therapy alone. Most of the indolent types are nodular (or follicular) in morphology. The aggressive type of NHL has a shorter natural history, but a significant number of these patients can be cured with intensive combination chemotherapy regimens. In general, with modern treatment of patients with NHL, overall survival at 5 years is approximately 50% to 60%. Thirty percent to 60% of patients with aggressive NHL can be cured. The vast majority of relapses occur in the first 2 years after therapy. The risk of late relapse is higher in patients with a divergent histology of both indolent and aggressive disease. [

Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL) in children
This section gives information about non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in children. It is helpful to read it alongside our general information about children's cancers , which contains more about cancers in children, their diagnosis and treatment and the support services available. Each year in the UK about 80 children of all ages develop Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
What is Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma?
Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is cancer of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is the body's natural defence against infection. It is made up of a collection of lymph glands (nodes) which are situated throughout the body in the neck, armpits, chest, abdomen and groin. Tiny vessels (tubes) connect these glands. The tonsils and spleen (which breaks down old blood cells) are also part of the lymphatic system. A diagram showing the main groups of lymph nodes in the body (d) Cancers which start in the lymphatic system are called lymphomas. One group of lymphomas was first described by Dr Thomas Hodgkin in 1832 and is known as Hodgkin's disease. The other group (which do not have the features of Hodgkin's disease) are known as Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. Both these conditions can often be cured, though the treatments are different.
