Help Support The Fight Against Cancer!
I'm running the Vancouver BC Marathon in May '03 to raise funds for the NYC Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society You're probably here because I notified you somehow about this site. Or, maybe you've stumbled across it just surfing. There's a ton of sports related fundraising sites out there. Regardless, thanks for stopping by, take a look around as long as you're here. Thanks! Welcome to "Joe's Marathon Challenge". My name is Joe Scott, I am a Marathoner and a Cancer Survivor. The Marathon is a 26.2 mile endurance event that originated in Ancient Greece in 490BC. It has been part of every Olympics ever since. This makes it one of the oldest and most enduring sporting events. Less than 1% of the population has done a Marathon, and very few of those are cancer survivors. I do these events to celebrate life & survival, and to raise funds to help others fight cancer. I am going for the Disney World Marathon again! Training for the 2003-2004 marathon season has begun! Upcoming events include the Walt Disney World Marathon 2004, and the Miami Tropical Marathon 2004.
You can navigate through the site by clicking on the shoes. The purpose of this site is as follows: Offer hope to those suffering with cancer.
Keep my sponsors up to date.
Attract potential new sponsors.
Encourage others to join Team in Training (TNT).
Share my experiences with the world.

Like other cancers, lymphomas, occur when cells divide too much and too fast. Growth control is lost, and the lymphatic cells may overcrowd, invade, and destroy lymphoid tissues and metastasize (spread) to other organs. There are two general types of lymphomas: "Hodgkin's Disease" (named after Dr. Thomas Hodgkin, who first recognized it in 1832) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The lymphatic tissue in Hodgkin's disease contains specific cells - Reed-Sternberg cells - that are not found in any other cancerous lymphomas or cancers. These cells distinguish Hodgkin's disease (HD) from non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHLs). Anatomy The lymphatic system - the target of lymphomas - includes the lymph nodes and other organs that make up the immune and blood-forming (hematopoietic) elements of the body.

Scientists at Bath Cancer Research undertake ex vivo drug sensitivity studies using the Differential Staining Cytotoxicity (DiSC) assay [Ref 10 of Selected Publications ]. With this we assess the cytotoxic drug sensitivity of fresh human cells from patients with leukaemia, lymphoma and cancer. Our greatest expertise is with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), acute myeloid leukaemia (AML or ANLL) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Service
Bath Cancer Research also provides an international service for consultant haematologists/ oncologists, testing cells from their patients for ex vivo drug response to a panel of cytotoxic drugs (up to 35 drugs). A report is sent to the physician to aid choice of optimum therapy. This information helps maximise the likelihood of response (and therefore survival) and reduces the risk of causing patient toxicity with no clinical benefit. Some assays are chargeable New Drug Screening

Study shows link between pesticides and lymphoma
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) A newly published study has found that children exposed to pesticides in the home may be three to seven times more likely to develop non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), compared to unexposed children. The authors of the report in the December 1 issue of the journal Cancer caution that the number of children in the study was small, and that more research with larger groups is needed.

Drug combination improves lymphoma survival rates
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) A combination drug therapy looks to be the first new treatment in 20 years for patients with a deadly form of lymphoma, researchers said Sunday. Conventional chemotherapy combined with Rituxan, a cloned antibody, significantly improves survival chances for patients with the aggressive form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, according to study results presented in San Francisco at a meeting of the American Society of Hematology.

06/29/2001 - Updated 12:03 PM ET Usenet creator Jim Ellis dies Ellis, who had been battling non-Hodgkins lymphoma for two years, died at home in Beaver County early Thursday, said his wife, Carolyn. Most recently an Internet security consultant with Sun Microsystems, Ellis was one of the creators of Usenet, which linked computers and allowed people to share information and reply to messages. Usenet began in 1979 when Ellis and another Duke graduate student, Tom Truscott, thought of hooking together computers to share information. At the beginning of 1980, the network consisted of two sites at Duke and one at the University of North Carolina. Usenet quickly became a popular means of trading and sharing information internationally before the World Wide Web came into existence. Allan Fisher, chief executive officer of Carnegie Technology Education, a subsidiary of Carnegie Mellon University which develops Web-based courses, said Usenet could be considered "the first big community application" of an interconnected system of computers.

The term lymphoma refers to cancers that originate in the body's lymphatic tissues . Lymphatic tissues include the lymph nodes (also called lymph glands), thymus, spleen, tonsils adenoids , and bone marrow, as well as the channels (called lymphatics or lymph vessels) that connect them. Although many types of cancer eventually spread to parts of the lymphatic system, lymphomas are distinct because they actually originate there. About 1,700 children younger than 20 years old are diagnosed with lymphoma each year in the United States. Lymphomas are divided into two broad categories, depending on the appearance of their cancerous (malignant) cells. These are known as Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Together, they are the third most common type of cancer in children. Hodgkin's Disease
This type of lymphoma is defined by the presence of specific malignant cells, called Reed-Sternberg cells, in the lymph nodes or in some other lymphatic tissue. Hodgkin's disease affects about three out of every 100,000 Americans, most commonly during early and late adulthood (between ages 15 and 40 and after age 55). The most common first symptom of Hodgkin's disease is a painless enlargement of the lymph nodes (a condition known as swollen glands) located in the neck, above the collarbone, in the underarm area, or in the groin. If cancer involves the

Lymphoma: Cancer of the White Blood Cells Malignant lymphoma is a relentlessly progressive illness," says Dr. Bruce Madewell, professor of surgical and radiological sciences and chief of the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) Oncology Service. The disease, also called lymphosarcoma, is a tumor of the lymphatic tissue and lymphocytes (white blood cells) that causes lymph nodes throughout the body to become enlarged. The Disease in Dogs "Malignant lymphoma accounts for nearly 20 percent of all canine cancers," says Dr. Michael Lucroy, who, after completing his residency in oncology at UC Davis, now carries out cancer studies at the CCAH. "Dogs can be 'old timers' or as young as two or three years old when they contract lymphoma, but the average age is 10, which is the equivalent of middle to late age," he says. The owner may first notice unusual swellings, which turn out to be enlarged lymph nodes, in the lower neck region of a dog that has lymphoma. Examination by a veterinarian will reveal that lymph nodes all over the body are enlarged. The Disease in Cats In cats, says Dr. Lucroy, malignant lymphoma usually affects the gastrointestinal tract, and cats generally show clinical signs of vomiting and diarrhea. Upon examination, multiple enlarged lymph nodes can be felt within the intestinal tract, and the wall of the bowel is found to be thickened and infiltrated with malignant lymphocytes.

This site aims to provide resources on Burkitt's Lymphoma, a very rare form of cancer with about only 300 new cases a year in the United States. Burkitt's Lymphoma, rare in most of the world, is the most common childhood cancer in Central Africa, and is one of the most aggressive of all human cancers. Burkitt's lymphoma is one type of a group of malignant diseases know as the Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas (NHL). These lymphomas are very similar to the leukemias. The type of malignant cell present is called a B-cell and Burkitt's is often referred to as a B-cell lymphoma or leukemia. As with other cancers, the exact cause is not known. Burkitt's is the most common in children in Africa and there is some evidence linking its cause there to a virus known as the Epstein-Barr virus. Outside of Africa, chromosomal defects in some of the patient's cells may be the cause. Children still seem to be the most affected, but there are cases of adults with Burkitt's. This malignancy grows very rapidly and a person who appeared in good health a month or 6 weeks ago may now be critically ill.

Issue 3: Summer 1998 Feline Lymphoma The cat with lymphoma may demonstrate only very vague problems. Progressive lack of appetite, lethargy and weight loss are most common. Depending on which organs are affected, other signs such as chronic diarrhea, vomiting and difficulty in breathing may occur. Many diseases can cause these signs, and as with any problem, diagnosis should be based on examination by your veterinarian and appropriate tests. Diagnostic testing may involve blood tests, x-rays, ultrasound and biopsy procedures. In some cases surgery may be recommend for confirmation of diagnosis and possible initial treatment. Many forms of lymphoma in the cat are treatable with surprisingly good initial results. Cure, however, is unlikely. Unfortunately the average survival of the cat with lymphoma is only six months. Every cat with lymphoma should be evaluated for prognosis based on clinical stage (an estimate of the progression and severity) of disease and appropriate treatment possibilities then determined. There will be individual animals that can survive for several years with a very good quality of life. There will also be those instances in which your veterinarian will find it difficult to recommend treatment due to very advanced disease. The major issues will involve prognosis, quality of life, availability and costs of appropriate treatment.
