I'm wondering if any of the parents here have had any experience with this. My 4 month old son was diagnosed with a lymphangioma last week and we will have a consult with a specialist this week. The lump is near his shoulder blade, about 2-3 cm in diameter, rubbery, and does not seem to bother him. A brief google suggests that there's not much reason to treat except cosmetic. Anyone else have a babe with this sort of thing? Thanks, Hannah Post 1 of 1 Topic 7863 of 8391

Mesenteric Lymphangioma Causing Bowel Obstruction in a Child
STEPHEN TROUM, MD, and MAURICE M. SOLIS, MD, Macon, GA
ABSTRACT: Mesenteric lymphangioma was manifested as a bowel obstruction in a child with cerebral palsy. Diagnosis was not confirmed until the time of laparotomy. Mesenteric lymphangioma is rare but should be considered in a child with bowel obstruction and no other known abdominal disease. Lymphangioma is a benign cystic tumor in infants and children.1 Lymphangioma of the mesentery is rare and often diagnosed incidentally.2 When symptoms occur, they may include pain, nausea, vomiting, palpable mass, peritonitis, and bowel obstruction.2-4 Lymphangioma is often confused with mesenteric cysts both clinically and in the literature, but distinct histologic criteria distinguish the two entities.2,4-6 We report a case of mesenteric lymphangioma causing small bowel obstruction in a child with cerebral palsy. CASE REPORT Fig 1 A diagnosis of severe dehydration and bowel obstruction was made, and the patient was admitted for fluid resuscitation and nasogastric suction. Differential diagnosis included proximal stool impaction, intussusception, midgut volvulus, and internal hernia. Six hours later, the patient's temperature spiked to 103degreesF and the abdomen became acutely tender, which prompted emergency laparotomy. A 7 cm multiloculated cystic mass was found on the mesentery of the jejunum, causing compression and obstruction ( Fig 2 ). The tumor, mesentery, and affected bowel were resected. The remaining bowel was reanastomosed primarily. Histologic analysis confirmed the mass to be a mesenteric lymphangioma. The presence of endothelial-lined spaces, smooth muscle, and lymphoid tissue was diagnostic (

Introduction Lymphangiomas are benign congenital malformation of lymphatic system and are common in pediatric practice specially involving neck and axillary soft tissue. However it may present at few uncommon and rare sites including spleen, mediastinum, retroperitonum, ovary and mesentery [1]. Clinical presentation is variable and may be misleading; therefore complex imaging studies are required in evaluation. We present a case of rare retroperitoneal lymphangioma with an uncommon presentation. Methods and Materials An eight month old male child presented in our pediatric hospital with the complaint of gradually increasing abdominal mass since last four to five months. On clinical examination the lesion was huge extending from epigastrium to hypogastrium and laterally to flanks. On close interrogation parents revealed that the small hump was present since birth, which remained unnoticed because it was asymptomatic. Plain film of abdomen showed a huge soft tissue mass lesion occupying almost whole abdomen, displacing the stomach bubble and bowel loops on the left side. Both hemi diaphragms were pushed upwards.

    LYMPHANGIOMA - CYSTIC MEDIASTINAL HYGROMA
MILJENKO RAOS , STIPE BATINICA , KORNELIJA KOVAÈ , NEDA ABERLE A seventeen month-old-female child is presented with cystic hygroma of the left upper mediastinum. From the third month the patient had expiratory dyspnea caused by the tumour. CT and ultrasound showed the cystic, liquid-filled tumorous formation. The tumour was removed surgically. Diagnosis of cystic hygroma was confirmed pathohystologically.

Cystic hygroma is an inborn tumor of the lymphatic system that, in some rare cases, may be inherited as an autosomal recessive genetic trait. This progressive disorder is characterized by a large sac filled with lymph fluid protruding from the skull at the nape of the neck. The hygroma is thought to be caused by a failure of the lymph system to properly connect with the blood vessels in the neck and thus with the appropriate blood circulation system. PRELIMINARY DRAFT This preliminary draft has not been approved by our medical advisors; therefore, its accuracy cannot be guaranteed. Verification of medical accuracy is pending. This is the most current information that NORD has available at this time. Lymphangiomas, also known as lymphatic malformations, are abnormal, localized or generalized growths consisting of newly formed, enlarged (dilated) lymphatic vessels. These relatively common benign (noncancerous) tumors of childhood are almost always evident by about three years of age and most commonly develop in the facial and neck (cervical) region, under the arms (axillae), or in the chest region (thorax). Lymphangiomas may occur as an isolated condition or in association with certain underlying chromosomal abnormalities or genetic syndromes.

    Juan's Treatment for Lymphangioma
For six-year-old Juan, life in southern Uruguay was typical. He played soccer, instructed in Tae Kwon Do, raced around on bicycles with his friends and attended kindergarten. One mid-November day, Juan's parents noticed something they described as a mosquito's bite on their son's neck, just below his jaw line. Within three days, the finite mark enlarged to the size of a grapefruit. "As a parent, this was alarming. The growth also made Juan physically uncomfortable and terribly self conscious," says Juan Pablo, the boy's father. "We knew Juan needed immediate medical attention."
    Seeking Answers
Juan's parents sought treatment at the Montevideo Clinic, in the capital city of Uruguay. The diagnosis was complex; Juan was born with a rare condition of the lymphatic system lymphangioma. It's a rare disorder. Fortunately, lymphangiomas are non-cancerous. Unfortunately, there aren't any quick-fix treatments no special diets or drugs. The treatment of choice is removal of the mass. And the surgery is complex because it involves lymph nodes; and depending on the location of the lesion, may also involve facial nerves and the muscles used for chewing and swallowing.
