Lyme Disease
Medical Author: William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR What is Lyme disease?
Lyme disease is a bacterial illness caused by a bacterium called a "spirochete." The actual name of the bacterium is Borrelia burgdorferi. Lyme disease is spread by ticks when they bite the skin permitting the bacterium to infect the body. Lyme disease can cause abnormalities in the skin, joints, heart and nervous system. What are symptoms and signs of Lyme disease?
Lyme disease affects different areas of the body in varying degrees as it progresses. The site where the tick attaches to the body is where the bacteria enter through the skin. Initially, the disease affects the skin and also causes "flu-like" symptoms. Later, it produces abnormalities in the joints, heart and nervous system. Lyme disease is medically described in three phases as: (a) Early localized disease with skin inflammation (b) Early disseminated disease with heart and nervous system involvement, including palsies and meningitis (c)

New Vaccine Targets Lyme Disease
New Hope for Diminishing 'Great Masquerader'
by Carol Lewis Don C.'s hands hurt for months. He kept getting sore throats. When he turned his head to either side, it was painful to move it back. He suffered from a lack of concentration, memory loss, aching joints, and depression. Yet, the then-41-year-old New Jersey native just assumed it was all part of getting older. As symptoms worsened, Don became concerned that he was suffering from far more than the effects of middle age. A diagnostic questionnaire and extensive testing eventually confirmed that he had Lyme disease. In December 1998, the Food and Drug Administration licensed the first vaccine to help prevent Lyme disease, a bacterial infection transmitted by tick bites. LYMErix, distributed by SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, Philadelphia, is an unusual vaccine. Like most vaccines, it stimulates the human immune system to produce antibodies, in this case directed against

Lyme Disease
  • Lyme disease is a rapidly emerging bacterial infection that is spread to people by the bite of infected ticks. Lyme disease can cause a rash, flu-like symptoms, and aching joints. Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics. Without treatment, Lyme disease can cause serious, long-term health problems. To prevent Lyme disease: 1) protect yourself from tick bites, 2) remove attached ticks promptly, and 3) get early diagnosis and treatment.
What is Lyme disease? Lyme disease is an infection transmitted by the bite of certain, very small, infected ticks. Lyme disease gets its name from the town of Lyme, Connecticut, where the illness was first identified in the United States in 1975. What is the infectious agent that causes Lyme disease? Lyme disease is caused by a corkscrew-shaped bacterium, or spirochete, called Borrelia burgdorferi . Ticks infected with the bacterium spread the disease to humans. Where is Lyme disease found? Cases of Lyme disease have been reported by nearly every state in the United States, but the disease is concentrated in the east coastal states, the north central states, and northern California. Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Wisconsin account for about 90% of all cases. In the Northeast and Great Lakes region, Lyme disease is spread by the black-legged tick, which lives in wooded areas, grasslands, and yards. In the Pacific Northwest, the disease is spread by the western black-legged tick. In the Southeast, the disease is thought to be spread by the black-legged tick.

Mission of The Heimlich Institute:
"Benefiting Humanity Through Health and Peace." In June 1998, The Heimlich Institute became a member of Deaconess Associations Inc., to help advance and promote the mission and vision of The Heimlich Institute in perpetuity. Founded in New York in the 1960s, The Heimlich Institute moved to Cincinnati 30 years ago. Now located on the campus of Deaconess Hospital in Cincinnati, the Institute continues to conduct scientific, cultural and social research into issues of importance to the medical and scientific community, as well as addressing social concerns in the United States and abroad. Henry J. Heimlich , M.D., president, is best known for the lifesaving Heimlich Maneuver, for which he won the Lasker Award in 1984. But the technique is just part of the work of the institute that bears his name. Through The Heimlich Institute, Dr. Heimlich is researching new treatments for AIDS and cancer, and teaching the expanded use of the Heimlich Maneuver to save drowning victims, asthma sufferers and cystic fibrosis patients. Dr. Heimlich also works to promote peaceful solutions to international problems through the "A Caring World" program. The Institute places emphasis on using the creative portion of our minds in medicine and life. Each person creates within the limits of his or her knowledge and capability. With this creativity comes challenge, frustration and controversy. Dr. Heimlich's favorite phrase is: "If all of your peers understand what you have done, you are not creative," but when ideas are proven successful, in spite of attempts to interfere, inevitably truth prevails, and the joys and rewards of one's work are insurmountable.

What is Lyme disease?
Lyme disease, or Borreliosis, is a tick-borne bacterial disease affecting both humans and animals. First discovered in the U.S. in humans in 1975 and reported in dogs in 1984, it has spread rapidly across the country, affecting more victims every year. It is caused by a corkscrew-shaped bacteria called Borrelia Burgdorferi. Why is Lyme Disease spreading so rapidly?
Studies have shown that waterfowl and other migratory birds have helped disperse the infected tick. Dogs and wildlife that run in infected fields can bring infected ticks back to suburban locations and backyards. Dogs traveling with their owner can spread infected ticks to distant locations. Secluded wooded areas where people live or spend leisure time are the natural environments for ticks and the Lyme disease bacteria.

Lyme disease, the most common tick-borne illness in the United States, has an annual incidence of 0.5 percent in endemic areas. It most commonly occurs in the Northeast and upper Midwest, in areas that encourage and harbor the deer tick. The tick transmits an infection of the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi that typically manifests as a localized skin lesion, erythema migrans. Rarely, Lyme disease manifests as localized arthritis, heart block or disease of the nervous system. Lyme disease is a clinical diagnosis, and laboratory tests should only be used to clarify diagnostic issues. The current standard for laboratory diagnosis includes a two-step approach using an initial immunoassay with a confirmatory Western blot. Treatment includes 10 to 21 days of oral doxycycline in nonpregnant adults or a similar course of amoxicillin in children or pregnant women. Overdiagnosis and overtreatment of Lyme disease have become common. Lyme disease is a multisystem disorder caused by the tick-borne spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi . Lyme disease usually begins with an erythematous skin lesion, erythema migrans, which is often associated with a self-limited virus-like illness. If the infection is untreated, within days to weeks the infection may spread to a number of organs, including the nervous system, the joints and the heart.

Let's start this discussion with the big word and get it out of the way. Jarisch-Herxheimer Reaction; Herxheimer or Herks for short. When the body is harboring a significant amount of foreign protein, for instance, as in the form of migrating heartworm larvae, migrating larvae of intestinal worms, or the very large spirochaete bacteria that cause Lyme disease, it is faced with a set of problems which cause disease (such as Lyme). When those living organisms die, due to treatment with monthly heartworm medication (any of the monthly meds) or due to treatment of Lyme disease with a good antibiotic, the body reacts differently to the dead protein in its tissues and blood stream. The dead spirochaetes may not be causing symptoms of Lyme any longer, but they now cause an extreme inflammatory response in the individual. The migrating larvae of intestinal parasites usually do no great amount of harm while live, but when dead they, too, cause a massive inflammatory reaction. Killing intestinal parasites as adults does not entail any such risk. Likewise, killing heartworm stages with the daily heartworm medications causes no risk of this nature. The Herxheimer reaction in those of us who have Lyme disease usually manifests itself as feeling really 'sick' one to five days after starting on antibiotic medication, or after starting a different antibiotic medication, and often periodically while continuing on the same medication. This is taken clinically as proof that the disease is still active, and that the antibiotic is effective as well. So there is something good about feeling bad under these circumstances.
