About this booklet
This booklet is written for people with lupus and their families and friends. It explains how lupus develops, how it affects different parts of the body, how it can affect people in different ways and how doctors diagnose it. We then explain how it can be treated and offer hints and advice on living with it more easily. Near the end of the booklet you will find information on how to contact the Arthritis Research Campaign ( arc ), and a few suggestions for further reading. Finally, we have included a brief glossary of medical words (like cartilage ). We have put these in italics when they are first used in the booklet.

Working to find a cure in our lifetime.
The Lupus Support Networks provides education, assistance, and support to those affected by Lupus, Fibromyalgia, Sjogrens, Raynauds and other autoimmune diseases.
Basic Facts About Lupus
Lupus is an acute and chronic inflammatory disease that, for unknown reasons, causes the immune system to become hyperactive and attack the body's own healthy tissue and organs. Lupus is not contagious, but the exact cause is unknown. An estimated 1.5 million people have been diagnosed with the disease, ninety percent of whom are women.
Lupus can occur at any age, and in either sex, although it occurs 8 to 9 times more frequently among adult females than among adult males, but the symptoms of the disease are the same in men as in women. Hormonal factors may explain why lupus occurs more frequently in females. African Americans, Native Americans, Asians and Latinos are believed to develop lupus more frequently than Caucasians.
For most people, lupus is a mild disease affecting only a few organs. For others, it may be serious and cause life threatening problems.
Lupus Support Network was incorporated in Pensacola, Florida as a nonprofit, charitable organization in July of 1982. The purpose of the Chapter is to educate the public about lupus, maintain an active liaison with the medical community in the treatment and treatment facilities of the disease, and to assist its Branches in providing grassroots support services to lupus patients and their families.

Recent Lupus May Have Simple Cause New research from scientists at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), has revealed that a single defect in a common protein causes a severe autoimmune disease akin to lupus. What Is C-Reactive Protein (CRP)? As a blood test, CRP is not specific. A high result serves as a general indication of acute inflammation. Doctors can utilize the CRP test to assess the effectiveness of a specific arthritis treatment and monitor periods of disease flareup. Does your doctor order this test routinely. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Systemic lupus erythematosus , often just called lupus, is a chronic disease that can affect almost any part of the body. People with mild lupus may only have a skin rash and/or joint pain. In more severe lupus, important organs like the kidneys, heart, blood vessels, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, and brain can be involved. Any two people with lupus may have different symptoms. They may also have different lengths of time when the disease is active or in remission. While lupus cannot be cured, your health care provider can help you control symptoms and lead a relatively normal life.
What Happens in the Body?
Normally the immune system protects us by attacking bacteria, viruses and other cells recognized as foreign and harmful to the body. But in lupus, the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells and tissue. Because of this, lupus is called an autoimmune disorder (auto means self). The reasons for these mistakes by the immune system are not completely understood. It is known that certain medicines can help prevent the immune system from making mistakes. These medicines are very useful in treating lupus symptoms and preventing damage to the body. The inflammatory response is another way that our bodies protect us from foreign cells and infection. Examples of inflammation are red itchy eyes or a sore throat. When the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue, the body mistakenly tries to help by causing inflammation. This can damage healthy tissues and cause pain. Because of this, lupus is also called an

ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT AND LUPUS
Nancy Becker, M.D. Kansas City, MO A selection from the Lupus Foundation of America Newsletter Article Library Distributed in Canada by Lupus Canada Return to Front Cover Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has several factors we generally believe may precipitate exacerbation and/or induction: 1) infection, 2) surgery, 3) pregnancy, 4) emotional stress, 5) drugs, and 6) sunlight. We want to address #6. We will focus on what we know, what we don't know, what are practical steps that can be taken to protect oneself, and finally what we can do to learn more. It has been known for a long time that sun exposure can cause the initial presentation as well as a flare in existing disease. Indeed "photo-sensitivity" is a fairly common feature of lupus and can occur in various forms. Skin eruptions occur mainly on sun exposed areas of the body with the face being the most frequently affected. This is why we believe that sun exposure plays a role in producing the eruption in most cases. However, only in a small percent of persons is there a history of particular exposure being responsible for any given rash. Worsening of existing rashes by exposure is much more common and occurs in the majority of people with disease confined to the skin and in about 30% of persons who have the systemic form of lupus.

NIH LAUNCHES STUDY OF HEMATOPOIETIC STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION FOR SEVERE, TREATMENT-RESISTANT LUPUS
Researchers at the Department of Health and Human Services' National Institutes of Health (NIH) have launched a five- year study to see whether a therapy using transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells, blood stem cells found in bone marrow, can produce long-term remission for patients with severe, treatment-resistant systemic lupus erythematosus (or lupus), a rheumatic autoimmune disease that can affect the body's major organs. Immunomedics Reports First Clinical Results with Epratuzumab in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
Immunomedics, Inc. (Nasdaq: IMMU) reported today that a rheumatology group from the University of Berlin, Germany, presented their initial Phase II results on eleven SLE patients given epratuzumab at the 7th International Congress on Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and Related Conditions, being held in New York City. Living With Lupus is Not An Easy Road
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease: a long-lasting sickness in which the human immune system, for reasons unknown, becomes hyperactive and turns on its own body, attacking normal, healthy tissues as if they were a virus.

Originally published Lupus Canada Bulletin , Volume 4 No. 1, Spring 1994

It has long been known that exposure to sunlight or artificial ultraviolet (UV) light can worsen the skin lesions of lupus in some people. Experiments with ultraviolet A and B light have showed that both parts of the UV spectrum can affect lesions adversely. Approximately 70% of patients with subacute cutaneous lupus (SCLE), 40-60% of patients with discoid lupus (DLE) and 10% of patients with systemic lupus (SLE) are made worse by sunlight or UV light. UV light can cause both local and systemic immune alterations, and some patients find that their systemic symptoms become worse after UV light exposure. Light skinned patients are generally more sensitive to UV light, but even blacks with lupus can be made worse by UV light.

The northern and central stars of Lupus, the Wolf, loop around the picture to the southwest of Scorpius . The constellation is cut off by the horizon, which is bright from distant lamps. Pi Scorpii, the southern star of the three-star head of Scorpius, is the brighter star near the upper left corner. Kakkab, Alpha Lupi, is barely seen on the horizon at the lower right. Though a blue star, it appears reddish here because of absorption of the light by the Earth's atmosphere. Northeastern Centaurus is at right. From lower latitudes, central Lupus , including Kakkab, shines much more brightly.
