FAISALABAD: Bad eating habits cause stomach, liver disorders
By Our Staff Correspondent

FAISALABAD, Dec 30: The city and its surrounding areas are in the grip of stomach and liver diseases due to the negligence of government agencies and improper eating habits.
This was stated by physicians and specialists while speaking at a seminar on 'Hapatobiliary diseases and Gastro-enterology' organized by practising doctors forum 'Healing Hands' here on Monday.
They said it was imperative for the practitioners to educate their patients about basic principles of hygiene, food dietary habits and preventive inoculation against hepatitis.
Prof Dr Irshad Haq said the family physicians and general practitioners should create awareness among their patients to adopt healthy living practices. Patients, he said, should be briefed about early symptoms of common stomach and liver diseases to minimize the incidence of such diseases.
Improper eating habits, heavy use of fats, species and chilies in food and impure drinking water were some of the major causes of common stomach and liver diseases, including the killer hepatitis diseases, he said.

Accessible information on liver disease
Hepatitis C, other liver disorders and liver health. A practical guide. Geoffrey C Farrell. Sydney: MacLennan and Petty, 2002 ($71.50, xi + 324 pp). ISBN 86433 157 6. As this book claims to be aimed at general practitioners and “a broader readership”, including laypeople, I felt that, as a specialist hepatologist, I was not necessarily the best person to review it. I asked a layperson and an experienced general practitioner for their opinions. From the layperson: The book is clearly written and the language and concepts are accessible to a non-medical reader. I particularly liked the style of writing and the tone, which was non-dogmatic when discussing alternative therapies, yet able to convey warnings when necessary. Geoffrey Farrell also shows cultural awareness. The book is easily followed as a reference text. If I had liver disease, I would want to have this book.
Secondary School English teacher, Essendon, VIC From the general practitioner: The book is comprehensive and informative. It will answer all your questions — if you can find what you are looking for. Finding information was a problem, as there is so much information packed into the 320 pages. For example, in the chapter “Diet and liver disease — is there a liver cleansing diet?” I had to wade through three recipes, four tables and 18 pages to find the answer — no! I also thought that starting each chapter with case studies, but not presenting the commentaries until the chapter’s end, was confusing. I would have preferred much of the information found in tables and charts to have been placed in appendices so that the book flowed more smoothly.

Liver Disease
More than 25 million people in the United States suffer from liver and gallbladder diseases, according to the American Liver Foundation. And, more than 43,000 die of a liver disease each year. The liver is the largest organ in the human body. It is also one of the most important ones. The biliary system consisting of the bile ducts and the gallbladder and the pancreas are all closely associated with the functioning of the liver. Some liver, biliary, and pancreatic diseases are congenital. Others can be prevented. In any case, whether these diseases are congenital, injury-related, viral-induced, or alcohol-induced, they can be devastating to a person's health and require professional care.

Gallstones
What are gallstones?
Gallstones form when bile stored in the gallbladder hardens into stone-like material. Too much cholesterol, bile salts, or bilirubin (bile pigment) can cause gallstones. When gallstones are present in the gallbladder itself, it is called cholelithiasis. When gallstones are present in the bile ducts, it is called choledocholithias. Gallstones that obstruct bile ducts can lead to severe or life-threatening infection of the bile ducts, pancreas, or liver. Bile ducts can also be obstructed by cancer or trauma. About Gallstones
There are two types of gallstones: cholesterol stones and pigment stones. Eighty percent of gallstones are cholesterol stones. Size of gallstones varies from a grain of salt to golf-ball size. A person can develop a single stone or several hundred. What are the symptoms of gallstones?
At first, most gallstones do not cause symptoms. However, when gallstones become larger, or when they begin obstructing bile ducts, symptoms or "attacks" begin to occur. Attacks of gallstones usually occur after a fatty meal and at night. The following are the most common symptoms of gallstones. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:
  • pain that comes and goes in the abdomen nausea vomiting fever chills jaundice abdominal bloating intolerance of fatty foods belching or gas indigestion
