FALLON, Nevada (AP) For three years, scientists prodded the dust, dirt and water in this rural community and tested the blood of dozens of its residents all in hopes of uncovering why children were developing leukemia. Yet despite the work, scientists revealed Monday that they haven't been able to determine what caused the disease that has sickened 16 children and killed three since 1997. "We were hoping we'd get more information here," said Dr. Malcolm Smith of the National Cancer Institute. "The studies didn't do that but they certainly told us a great deal about what does not exist as health threats to the community." The scientists' final report, presented at a meeting attended by more than 100 people, was a disappointment for families of children afflicted by the cancer. But researchers said the massive amount of data they compiled should help in future efforts to determine the source of the disease.

On leukemia, chemotherapy, and moving on with the rest of your life. Foot In Mouth Disease Laura walks across the room with barely a hello. Just a "hey" as she sfuffles past my bed. She doesn't bother to knock. Why should she? She's my sister, after all, and she's just finished donating plaletets for me again. She has to take a couple of hours off of work to drive down to the Blood Center, and then to sit there while the platelets spin out of her body, so she usually schedules these appointments for some time in the afternoon. When she's done, she'll drive over to the hospital so the two of us can visit for a couple of hours before any of the parents visit. She falls into one of the chairs. She grabs at the armrests and kind of lift-wiggles it until the chair is parallel to my bed. She kicks at the other chair with her feet, pushing it, too, no longer faces my bed. She slumps in the one, stretches her feet out in the other. "Fucking-A," she says, a deep sigh, eyes closed, hands running through her hair to take out the loose pony tail. She's been putting in a ton of hours at work lately. She's beat. She starts venting, my sister, about work and increasingly lousy traffic into and out of the valley, and stupid drivers on 520, and the whole elaborate get-up that she has to deal with every couple of days (especially now that Mom isn't donating platelets any more) and she's so damn

Massachusetts Rep. Moakley dies of leukemia
BETHESDA, Maryland (CNN) Rep. John Joseph Moakley, 74, a good-humored Capitol Hill fixture for the last 29 years, died Monday of complications from leukemia. "It is my sad duty to notify you that our dear friend Joe Moakley passed away today, Memorial Day, at 3:30 p.m.," said Rep. James McGovern, D-Massachusetts, a former Moakley staffer, Monday at Bethesda Naval Hospital. "At his bedside were members of his family and his brothers Bob and Tom, staff and friends. "We all loved Joe very, very much," McGovern said. "We all admired the courage and even the humor he displayed over these last few weeks." Moakley, known to his friends and adversaries as "Joe," was a Massachusetts Democrat who represented the congressional district encompassing the rough-and-tumble South Boston section of Boston. He surprised many of his fellow House members earlier this year by announcing he was ill with leukemia, and planned to retire at the end of his term in 2002. Moakley was admitted to Bethesda Naval Hospital last week and his condition was said to have deteriorated rapidly. Family members and friends, including several lawmakers, held a long vigil at his bedside over the weekend.

    Leukemia in Iraq
by Andrew North It is the sight of the parents that strikes you first when you enter the leukemia ward at the Saddam Central Hospital for Children in Baghdad. Sitting next to each bed, their taut, bleak faces tell the story before you even look at the child curled up beside them. These mothers and fathers know that once their children are admitted here, there is almost no chance they will leave alive. “We call this ward the ‘ward of death,’” said Dr. Basim Al Abdali, almost matter-of-factly, as he inspected a patient’s notes at the end of a bed. A four-year-old boy had died just hours before this journalist’s visit. “Every day we lose one patient, maybe more than one patient, just in this ward. The mortality rate for leukemia and other cancers here in this ward is 100 percent.” There are no exact figures for the number of deaths from leukemia in Iraq. But the World Health Organization (WHO) office in Baghdad does not question the Iraqi Health Ministry’s estimate that since 1990 there has been a fourfold increase in the incidence of the disease.

... Links Immunogenetics of Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV) Infection in Cattle Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is an exogenous type C retrovirus that is associated with the development of malignant lymphoma in cattle. BLV infects lymphocytes and integrates randomly into host cell DNA. BLV has almost 50% nucleotide sequence similarity to HTLV (human T cell leukemia virus) types II and I. While these viruses have common regulatory mechanisms, they differ in host cell tropism, with B cells (CD5+, and CD5-) being the primary host of BLV infection (3). Following the establishment of BLV infection, the cattle mounts persistent antibody reponses to viral protiens, and virons can be isolated from cultured leukocytes of infected animals. However, the evolution of B and T cell responses during the natural history of BLV infection has not yet been clearly defined. Our long-term goal of BLV infection studies is to predict immune reponses (both qualitiatively and quantitatively) to pathogen-derived peptides based on host BoLA genotype, and to develop effective breeding strategies for resistance to infectious diseases of cattle. A deeper understanding of the immunogenetics of BLV infection (being an animal model for HTLV infection in humans) may shed light on human retroviral infections in general. References:

    Experimental drug fights rare leukemia
(CNN) - An experimental cancer therapy is showing promise against a rare form of leukemia, researchers reported Wednesday. Scientists at the National Cancer Institute have been conducting early trials on a drug called BL22 for the treatment of hairy cell leukemia. Their work is published in Thursday's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Hairy cell leukemia causes the spleen to swell and prevents the bone marrow from producing enough infection-fighting white blood cells. About 1,000 new cases are reported each year in the United States. The standard treatment is chemotherapy, but not all patients respond. The NCI researchers administered the drug to 16 patients who had not been helped by chemotherapy. Eleven of them went into full remission doctors found no cancer cells or only very few cancer cells in their bodies. Two patients went into partial remission. RESOURCES Learn more about leukemia from the National Cancer Institute "We were totally amazed to see the results," said Dr. Ira Pastan, one of the study authors, "amazed and excited because this is a phase one trial where we started a very low dose and mainly looked for safety of the drug. But as we just increased a little bit we found patients who were beginning to respond and eventually a large fraction of the patients we treated responded."
