The virus affects domestic cats and occurs in some wild felines as well. Types of FeLV There are three main types of feline leukemia virus: FeLV-A, FeLV-B, and FeLV-C. FeLV-positive cats can be infected with one, two, or all three types:
  • FeLV-A occurs in all FeLV-infected cats and causes severe immunosuppression (weakened immune system).

This page is created to track Julia's fight with leukemia for many people everywhere who are thinking of her. Julia turned 5 on March 5, 2003. She was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on May 8, 2003.
A little tutorial about Complete Blood Count. Here are the normal values:
Red blood cells (RBC) 4.2 – 6.0 million/mm3
Hemoglobin (HGB)12 – 18 g/dl
Hematocrit 36 – 52%
Platelets 150,000 – 450,000/mm3
White blood cells 4,000 – 11,000/mm3
ANC (infection fighting indicator) must be >1500 to fight infection Many people are asking how they can help. First of all, you all can donate blood. Even if Julia does not need it, it may help other kids. Children like Julia usually have many whole blood and platelet transfusions during treatment. If you wish, you can go to the Children's Hospital in DC and donate blood in her name (this does not mean that she will get it). By the way, her blood type is B+. Second, Julia loves getting mail. You can drop her a note or a card if you feel like. If you need our home address, please e-mail me at lolafox@yahoo.com (I'd rather not post it on the web.)

Welcome To Chloe's Web
A collection of resources providing support to FeLV cats and their caregivers and vets, to FeLV and FIV researchers, to cat lovers who wish to avoid FeLV, and to animal and pet lovers everywhere. Well, Fluffy The Cat is back! The good folks at the Cornell Vet School have been good enough to put Fluffy the FeLV Diagnostic Simulator back online for the general public. Either that, or yours truly just crashed the firewall again, so get over there quick. This is technical stuff used to train vets, but you'll love it (if your browser supports frames). Oh, yes. One more thing. Be sure to go to their home page, where you'll have access to everything a veterinary student at Cornell has access to. Who knows, maybe you're the next Medicine Woman. Fleas sure suck for an FeLV cat. Or any pet. Take a look at Flea World at Iowa State University for great information on flea control. Props to Doc Noxon, this really helps. Are you ready to Act Up against Feline Leukemia? Visit our new Research Abstracts Page where you can find some things that work in clinical trials, and know which things have not. Print them out, take them to your vet or better yet your local veterinary college. Discuss them with others. There's hope in combination immunotherapy, and we need to communicate it!

Posted by phabriga@students.wisc.edu , 9/7/00 at 10:36:32 AM. This article is one of the science education sites most popular. Read and enjoy Feline Leukemia is a retrovirus that is responsible for more deaths in cats than any other single cause. It was discovered in 1969 and believed to have originated from rat chromosomal DNA. There are ways of protecting a cat from this virus and it is also an easily detectable virus, but once the disease infects, chances of survival are small. Feline Leukemia has the same effect as AIDS does in people, it destroys the cat's immune system.(1) The cat's immune system can limit or eliminate the virus. About 40% of cats extinguish the virus with 16% of these fighting it off due to minimal exposure to the virus because of their isolated behavior and the other 24% resist the disease at phase 4. All of this usually occurs between 16-18 weeks after the FeLV infection began. About 20% of the cats put the disease in a latent stage. The disease will remain in this latent stage until the cat becomes stressed and then FeLV will re-emerge. About 5-10% of cats go through a sequestered stage in which viremia is limited, intermittent, or absent altogether. However the cat can still shed the virus through blood, urine, and in its milk. This leaves a total of about 30% of cats that just go through the disease from start to finish normally resulting in death.(1) Testing for cats is important, because a viremic cat may seem healthy but its immune system can be so surpressed that even a weak virus can initiate a disease. The cat would also still be shedding the virus and transmitting it to other cats. There are three tests the IFA, ELISA, and VI tests. Indirect Immunefluorescence Assay(IFA) looks for structural antigens in cytoplasm of FeLV cells and was the first practical diagnosis test for any animal retrovirus. VI test measures the number of replicating FeLV particles in plasma, serum, saliva, urine, tissue fluids, tissue homogenates, or spent tissue culture medium. IFA and IV are the best tests with a correlation of 98% between the two. Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay(ELISA) tests for soluble p27 in serum, saliva, tears, tissue, fluid, or solubized tissue homogenates. The overall agreement of the ELISA and IFA is 49%, but it has same day results where the others take 10-14 days and are very expensive.(1)

Two years later, she is winning the battle. We won't know for awhile if she has won the war, but she is on her way.Samantha has been so brave. She has shown so much courage and strength. Our lives have been enriched by this disease which invaded so rudely into our lives two years ago. We have learned quickly how important a hug, a kiss, the smell of ones skin, and the sound of a heart beat trully is. We no longer take for granted the simple pleasures in life. We laugh more, we cry more, and we love more. Samantha has touched so many lives in the last two years and we are amazed by her spirit. She continues to live each day as if she won't get a tomorrow. She is fully aware that life doesn't give you do-overs, so she makes sure that each moment counts. We, as her parents, are so privlaged to call her our daughter
Today is February 8, 2004. She will enter into her third year of treatment starting tomorrow. This year, she will finish her treatment and move onto a new life without taking chemo every day. She has become a beautiful young lady. When she started this journey of having cancer she was only 9 years old. Now, Sammy is 11 and in the 5th grade. She plays the violin, takes karate classes, is a straight A student, and has lots of friends. When she is feeling good, she goes until her body won't let her anymore. We can never tell her to just take it easy. She always wants to be on the go and hanging out with her friends or family. She is our hero.

But as the song climbed the charts, the band's keyboardist, Kevin Hearn, was fighting for his life. The symptoms had started the year before. First was the cough that wouldn't go away. It was followed by a loss of appetite, fatigue and bloody noses. "That's when I went crazy," Hearn said. "I never get bloody noses." Hearn went in for a checkup, and when the results came back, his doctor gave him the first hint there could be a serious problem. As Hearn recalls, "She came back and said, 'I want to send you to a specialist to have an ultrasound. If you can call a family member, that will be a good idea.'" That was the day Hearn found out he had leukemia. "When I heard it was a form of cancer, I started to worry and I was in denial," Hearn says. "I asked the doctor when [could] I go back to work. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, 'You might not go back to work. You might not be alive in five months.' I broke down and cried."

Home Services Contact Links ... Chemotherapy Drugs Leukemias Leukemia is a cancerous disorder of the blood cells . There are a variety of Leukemias, each with its own peculiar signs, symptoms, prognosis and behavior. Approximately 30,000 Americans develop some sort of leukemia every year. There are four major types of leukemia: Acute Leukemia refers to Leukemia which, if left untreated, can cause fatal complications in a very short period of time. Chronic Leukemias, on the other hand, if left untreated in some cases may not cause any immediate problems at all, even for years. Hairy Cell Leukemia is an entity of its own that will be discussed separately. When Leukemias progress, they can cause a rise or decline in the number of blood cells. Even though the total number of blood cells may be elevated, in most instances, the count of normal blood cells is reduced. This is due to overproduction of the leukemic cells that result in overpopulation of the bone marrow and suppression of normal blood cell production.

Living With Leukemia
by Carol Lewis It wasn't the flu-like symptoms that sent Neil Keller to the hospital one night in January 1995. It wasn't even the crippling back pain that left him virtually immobilized. It was the odd red stripe that Kathy Keller noticed running down the back of her husband's calf that prompted his sudden trip to the emergency room. Following his evaluation, the physical education teacher from Frederick, Md., learned that the red stripe was a blood clot. He also learned that he had leukemia and needed immediate medical attention. "I hastily left our two young children in the care of their grandparents because Neil was being transported quickly by ambulance to a special cancer center in Baltimore," remembers Kathy Keller. "It happened just that quickly." According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), about 30,000 new cases of leukemia were diagnosed in the United States in 2001. And even though it is thought of primarily as a childhood disease, the ACS says that leukemia strikes more adults than children. Anyone can get it, and like many forms of cancer, its cause is unknown. Certain risk factors, such as genetic conditions or adverse environmental exposure, are believed to increase the chances of developing the disease. Survival is strongly linked to age at diagnosis and the type of leukemia. Fortunately, the overall five-year survival rate for people with leukemia has tripled over the past 40 years. In 1960, the rate was 14 percent. By the 1970s, it had reached 35 percent. Today, the overall five-year survival rate is 44 percent.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 10, 2001
Print Media: 301-827-6242
Consumer Inquiries: 888-INFO-FDA FDA APPROVES GLEEVEC FOR LEUKEMIA TREATMENT The Food and Drug Administration today announced the approval of Gleevec (imatinib mesylate, also known as STI-571), a promising new oral treatment for patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) a rare life-threatening form of cancer. FDA reviewed the marketing application for Gleevec in less than three months under its "accelerated approval" regulations. "FDA and Novartis, the drug's manufacturer, should be commended for the rapid development and review that will make this product available soon for the leukemia patients who desperately need it," said Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson. "It is also important to recognize that today's approval is also a culmination of years of work and years of investment, by many people in many different institutions, and even in different fields of medicine. It's a testament to the groundbreaking scientific research taking place in labs throughout America." FDA approved the drug for treating patients with three stages of CML: CML myeloid blast crisis, CML accelerated phase, or CML in chronic phase after failure of interferon treatment. Accelerated approval allows FDA to approve drugs for serious or life-threatening illnesses on the basis of clinical trials establishing that the drug has an effect on a surrogate endpoint that is reasonably likely to predict a real clinical benefit. Gleevec has been shown to reduce substantially the level of cancerous cells in the bone marrow and blood of treated patients.

Acute Leukemia of Childhood and Adolescence
Editor's Preface
Leukemia is a malignancy or cancer of the bone marrow. All of the cells in the bloodstream are normally produced in the bone marrow. In leukemia, there is an unrestrained proliferation of a "clone" of immature white blood cells. These abnormal white blood cells gradually crowd out the normal blood cells. This can lead to anemia, an increased risk of infection, and bleeding. Leukemia is the most common form of childhood cancer, responsible for approximately 30% of cancers in children under age 16, according to the American Cancer Society. The disease will strike approximately 2,600 children in 1995. The cause of most cases of leukemia is unclear, although there appears to be a relationship between leukemia and exposure to radiation, genetic and congenital factors, exposure to chemicals such as benzene, and perhaps even infection with certain viruses. In the article that follows, Lorrie F. Odom, M.D., a nationally recognized pediatric oncologist, discusses progress that has been made in treatment of this most frightening disease. We are fortunate to be able to feature this article on The Medical Reporter, and wish to thank Dr. Odom for writing it for us. On behalf of Denver's medical community, we also wish to thank her for her exceptional commitment and devotion to children suffering from leukemia and other cancers. She is truly a physician who cares. Joel R. Cooper, The Medical Reporter
