Time.com People Fortune EW Possible link between Agent Orange, leukemia WASHINGTON (CNN) Research released Thursday suggests a possible association between a child's chance of getting a type of leukemia and a parent's exposure to Agent Orange, a defoliant used during the Vietnam War that already has been linked to several health problems among veterans and their offspring. But a congressionally mandated report from the Institute of Medicine stopped short of establishing a direct cause and effect between Agent Orange and acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), instead calling the evidence "limited or suggestive." Irva Hertz-Picciotto, professor of epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and chair of the committee that conducted the study, said researchers saw a 70 percent higher risk of AML for children whose parents served in Vietnam or Cambodia. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a disorder of morphologically mature but immunologically less mature lymphocytes and is manifested by progressive accumulation of these cells in the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic tissues. In this disorder, lymphocyte counts in the blood are usually equal to or higher than 5,000 per cubic millimeter with a characteristic immunophenotype (CD5 and CD23 positive B cells). [ ] As assays have become more sensitive for detecting monoclonal B-CLL-like cells in peripheral blood, researchers have detected a monoclonal lymphocytosis of undetermined significance (MLUS, in analogy to the monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, MGUS) in 3% of individuals over 40 years of age and 6% in those over 60 years of age. More Information General Information Sixty percent to 80% of adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) can be expected to attain complete remission status following appropriate induction therapy. Approximately 35% to 40% of adults with ALL can be expected to survive 2 years with aggressive induction combination chemotherapy and effective supportive care during induction therapy (appropriate early treatment of infection, hyperuricemia, and bleeding). A few studies that use intensive multiagent approaches suggest that a 50% 3-year survival is achievable in selected patients, but these results must be verified by other investigators. [ As in childhood ALL, adult patients with ALL are at risk of developing central nervous system (CNS) involvement during the course of their disease. This is particularly true for patients with L3 histology. [ ] Both treatment and prognosis are influenced by this complication. The examination of bone marrow aspirates and/or biopsy specimens should be done by an experienced oncologist, hematologist, hematopathologist, or general pathologist who is capable of interpreting conventional and specially stained specimens. HISTORY Jennifer Stroud was a typical five year old girl with a mommy, daddy and brother living in Dallas, Texas. She loved to play dolls, loved her favorite cuddly Molly, giggled, laughed, played and skipped with her friends. Around Thanksgiving 1993, we noticed she was tiring and started to run a low grade fever. We also noticed she was starting to bruise easily when she bumped into things. Lynn took her to the pediatrician who ran a blood test and told her on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1993, that she needed to go to a hospital because she may have leukemia. Later that day, we were told by the doctors she had leukemia, and later that evening that it was acute myeloid leukemia, and she started emergency treatment called leukapheresis, which cycled her blood through a filter to decrease the amount of white blood cells. Her condition was classified as critical.

Welcome to "Joe's Marathon Challenge". My name is Joe Scott, I am a Marathoner and a Cancer Survivor.The Marathon is a 26.2 mile endurance event that originated in Ancient Greece in 490BC. It has been part of every Olympics ever since. This makes it one of the oldest and most enduring sporting events. Less than 1% of the population has done a Marathon, and very few of those are cancer survivors. I do these events to celebrate life & survival, and to raise funds to help others fight cancer. Additional ATSDR Studies Background The cluster of childhood leukemia cases was brought to the attention of Nevada public health officials in the late summer of 2000, when it was learned that five cases of Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) had been diagnosed in Churchill County within a few months of each other. The Health Division immediately consulted with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on appropriate steps for an investigation.
