Types of Cancer Leukemias Overview
Overview
Leukemia is a cancer of blood cells that originates in the bone marrow, the soft, spongy inner portion of certain bones. The cancerous cells in leukemia are the white blood cells (leukocytes). About 31,000 new cases of leukemia are diagnosed in the United States each year. Acute myelogenous leukemia and chronic lymphocytic leukemia are the most common types in adults.
How Leukemia Develops
Leukemia develops when a blood cell undergoes a transformation into a malignant cell one capable of uncontrolled growth. Leukemia cells begin to multiply in the marrow, and as they do so they crowd out the normal blood cells those that carry oxygen to the body's tissues, fight infections, and help wounds heal by clotting the blood. Leukemia can also spread from the marrow to other parts of the body, including the lymph nodes, brain, liver, and spleen. Blood-cell development begins in the marrow with the formation of stem cells. These primitive cells are capable of developing into any kind of blood cell. Each of these types of cell has a very specific job in the functioning of the body.

9 months off treatment!

Well, where to begin? First of all, please take the time to see the Memorial Day pages Judy from Catch an Angel made HERE

Not much going on medically (not that I am complaining) because since he is off treatment, theres really not much to say except for the monthly visits. The next is June 9th. He does see an allergist/asthma specialist the 2nd, and then Rachel sees him the 4th. I'm a little annoyed because I made an appointment like 6 weeks ago with one well known one, only to find out the kids are seeing his associate instead of him.
I do have one request for prayers - for someone who's not on the Share the Love site yet - Colin was diagnosed with medulloblastoma in 2002, and has been off treatment since July 2003. He just relapsed yesterday. And also

Leukemia Written by Ila Shah-Reddy, M.D. F.A.C.P. and Haythem Ali, M.D. 1135 W. University Dr. , Suite 246 Rochester Hills, Mich 48307 This article was written to give patients a general overview of this class of diseases.
The leukemias are cancers of the blood forming cells. Acute leukemia involves the most primitive of these types of cells. This class of cancer leads to an overproduction of a blood cells that have similar characteristics (clones). Clonal cells share two common features that lead to the symptoms of leukemia. 1) The cells divide without control and fail to respond to the signals that tell them to stop. 2) These cells have a longer life than normal cells and gradually accumulate in the bone marrow. TREATMENT The treatment of leukemia continues to advance. Improved understanding of the basic disease process as well as better drugs and supportive care are leading to more cures and remissions. The outlook is much better now then it was even ten years ago. The biotechnology revolution offers hope of even better treatments in the near future. Treatment is divided into two categories 1) supportive and 2) chemotherapy treatment with chemical drugs. Supportive Care refers to treatments which help the patient, but do not attempt to fight the leukemia. These include:

Leukemia pill shows promise against stomach cancer
Gleevec, which was just approved for treating leukemia, also shows promise against a type of stomach cancer From Rhonda Rowland CNN Medical Correspondent (CNN) Last fall, 41-year-old Marina Symcox gave up on cancer treatment and began preparing for her funeral. At 38, Symcox had been diagnosed with a gastrointestinal stromal tumor, or GIST a type of stomach cancer that affects as many as 5,000 Americans each year. "I had absolutely been given no hope right from the beginning," she said. Until recently, there was no effective treatment for GIST. But researchers reported Sunday that a new cancer pill approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a common type of adult leukemia showed encouraging results when used on stomach cancers like those Symcox had. The pill was approved for use against leukemia last week and has been hailed as a major breakthrough. It is taken once a day and causes virtually no side effects.

Newer drug holds off leukemia longer
BOSTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) Using the drug fludarabine as the first line of defense keeps chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) at bay longer than standard treatment, but it does not affect overall survival, according to a study in this week's New England Journal of Medicine. CLL is the most common form of leukemia in adults, striking about 8,100 people in the United States each year.

    FELINE LEUKEMIA VIRUS DISEASES
Feline leukemia virus infection was, until recently, the most common fatal disease of cats. Because we can now protect cats with a leukemia virus vaccine, we are seeing fewer cases of the disease. However, it still remains a major cause of death in cats.
"Leukemia" means cancer of the white blood cells. This was the first disease associated with the feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and, thus, the source of its name. We often use the term "leukemia" rather loosely to include all of the diseases associated with the virus, even though most are not cancers of the blood. This virus causes many other fatal diseases, in addition to leukemia.
What diseases are caused by the FeLV?
There are three major disease categories associated with the FeLV:
    1. The Leukemias are cancers of the white blood cells. 2. Lymphosarcoma is a cancer which begins in lymphoid tissue, such as a lymph node. Almost any tissue may be affected; organs commonly involved include lymph nodes, intestinal tract, kidneys, liver, spinal cord, brain, bone marrow and blood. 3. The Non-Cancerous Diseases include a variety of somewhat unrelated diseases. Anemia, abortion, arthritis, and immune suppression are examples. When the immune system is suppressed, the cat becomes susceptible to many diseases it would ordinarily resist and mild diseases, such as respiratory infections, may become fatal.

Researchers report promising results with leukemia treatment
From staff reports May 22, 2000 Web posted at: 1:58 p.m. EDT (1758 GMT) ATLANTA (CNN) A treatment designed to kill cancer cells and not harm healthy tissues, as conventional chemotherapy often does, shows strong promise in tests for patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia, scientists announced at a meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

    80. Childhood Cancer: Leukemia
The term leukemia refers to cancers of the white blood cells (also called leukocytes or WBCs). ANLL is also called acute myelogenous leukemia (AML).

    KidsHealth
    Parents Medical Problems
The term leukemia refers to cancers of the white blood cells (also called leukocytes or WBCs ). When a child has leukemia, large numbers of abnormal white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow. These abnormal white cells crowd the bone marrow and flood the bloodstream, but they cannot perform their proper role of protecting the body against disease because they are defective. As leukemia progresses, the cancer interferes with the body's production of other types of blood cells, including red blood cells and platelets. This results in anemia (low numbers of red cells) and bleeding problems, in addition to the increased risk of infection caused by white cell abnormalities. Initially, abnormal leukemia cells appear only in the bone marrow and blood , but later they may spread elsewhere, including the lymph nodes, spleen , liver, brain , and testes. Types of Childhood Leukemia
In general, leukemias are classified into acute (rapidly developing) and chronic (slowly developing) forms. In children, about 98% of leukemias are acute. Childhood leukemias are also divided into acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) or acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL), depending on whether they involve specific white cells called
