Mycobacterium leprae
Clinical Features
It is a chronic bacterial infection involving the cooler body tissues, skin, supercial nerves, nose, pharynx, larynx, eyes and testicles. Skin lesions may occur as pale, anaesthetic macular lesions or erythematous inltrated nodules. Neurologic disturbances are manifested by nerve inltration and thickening with anaesthesia, neuritis, paraesthesia and trophic ulcers. The disease is divided clinically and by laboratory tests into two overlapping types: lepromatous and tuberculoid. The lepromatous type is progressive with nodular skin lesions, slow symmetric nerve involvement, numerous acid-fast bacilli in the skin lesions and a negative lepromin skin test. The tuberculoid type is benign and non-progressive with localised skin lesions, asymmetric nerve involvement, few bacilli present in the lesions and a positive lepromin skin test.

This is a story about today's technology and an ancient disease. It is set in the beautiful but poor Kingdom of Nepal and describes scientists who are sharing their skills and using molecular biology to understand and control leprosy. Jenny Davis tells the story of her visit to the "Forest of Joy" outside Kathmandu.
A road leading up to the Forest of Joy I am a microbiologist in an Australian public health laboratory. We have modern equipment and use sophisticated methods to investigate infectious disease problems in our community. But I've wondered about how much use this technology would be if I was in a lab in a developing country -basic health needs mean basic lab techniques, right? Then last year, I heard Australian immunologist Dr Paul Roche speak about his research work with leprosy in Nepal. I thought Paul was great. He was very aware of the ethics of conducting research in a developing country; he was keen to apply cutting-edge techniques to solve complex problems; and best of all, he was enthusiastic about the sharing of skills with his Nepali scientific colleagues. I decided to visit him at the Mycobacterial Research Laboratory at Anandaban Leprosy Hospital, Nepal.

Though rare in the United States, several million people throughout the world continue to suffer effects of leprosy and medical research in this area remains an important priority This page is dedicated to helping medical students and interested laymen develop a basic understanding of the epidemiology, pathogenesis and medical treatment of leprosy; and to guide those seeking more in depth information to appropriate resources. We have assembled a number of brief 'state of the art' presentations on many major aspects of the disease. Most of these presentations were distilled from seminars sponsored by the National Hansen's Disease Programs (NHDP) and showcase our medical and scientific faculty or invited guests. The

Richard Pastor Richard has conducted the leprosy campmeeting to preach the Gospel. All these people are afflicted with leprosy. Many of them have a positive attitude, but a few are negative about their disease. They are very interested to hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. We would like to continue to preach the Gospel here and provide medicine, clothes and good food, and Bibles at least every three months. If you would like to help - please donate here. Around 250 people with leprosy attended Pastor Richard's
campmeeting and
heard the Gospel. After Pastor Richard shares the Gospel, many people are
praying to receive Jesus Christ as their savior. In January of 2003 Pastor Richard and Pastor Britto share the Gospel, many lepers are
accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Go to Page 2 Go back to ministry photos Home How to Get to Heaven ... Links

Among the 122 countries where Hansen's disease (leprosy) was considered endemic in 1985, 110 have now reached the elimination goal at national level. At the beginning of 2003, however, 12 countries had yet to reach the elimination targetamong them, Brazil. Hence, the 5th Meeting of the WHO Tecnical Advisory Group was held in Myanmar, where an intense effort has been made to eliminate hanseniasis and to mobilize communities. This page contains the full-text meeting report and links to the Yangon Declaration, the recommendations from the meeting, and other useful information.

(Hansen's disease)
What is leprosy?
Leprosy is a chronic bacterial disease that affects the skin, nerves in the hands and feet, and in some cases, the lining of the nose. Leprosy is a rare disease in the United States. In 1999, there were 9 cases reported among New York City residents (rate of 0.1 cases per 100,000 persons). Who gets leprosy?
Anyone can get leprosy, but children seem to be more susceptible than adults. How is leprosy spread?
It is not clear how the leprosy germ is spread, but household and prolonged close contact is important. The germs probably enter the body through the nose, and possibly through broken skin. The germs get in the air through the nasal discharge of untreated lepromatous patients. What are the symptoms of leprosy?
There are two types of leprosy: tuberculoid and lepromatous. Patients with tuberculoid leprosy symptoms have a few well-defined lesions that are usually numb. Symptoms of lepromatous leprosy include a chronically stuffy nose and multiple skin lesions and nodules. How soon after infection do the symptoms appear?

Staff
I'm currently the Director and the only medically qualified Clinical Microbiologist. For more details about me return to my professional page Ms Jann Hennessy is the A/Supervising Scientist for the Microbiology Laboratory. We are currently recruiting a new Supervising Scientist. My registrar for 2004 is Dr John Kelly. He is an infectious diseases physician and will hopefully then continue to train in microbiology. We have another two scientist positions (although some technician positions are filled with degree holders) in the "Bacteriology" Section of the laboratory. There are another five technician positions within Bacteriology. Our "Serology" Section has one scientist and four technician positions. Serology covers traditional serology and some molecular microbiology. The staff of the Microbiology Laboratory and Serology Laboratory, RDH are an excellent group of motivated microbiologists. I am very fortunate to have them working under my direction.
Work
The work load varies markedly between the two seasons in the Top End. During the Dry Season (Winter) the work load drops to very comfortable levels. This reduction in work load allows the staff to recharge for the Wet Season (Summer) which gets very busy.
