Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation. - John F. Kennedy Coastal Learning Center Inc., founded in 1974 in Lakewood, NJ, has four state approved private day schools serving special needs students ages 5-21. The schools located in Howell Morganville Tuckerton and Little Egg Harbor provide a unique, nurturing, hands-on environment that develops a solid education and strengthens students' personal growth. The program prepares them for return to public school and, ultimately, an independent, productive life after graduation. A variety of teaching styles; close student-teacher relationships; and open communication make us unique. Our self-contained classes, with a maximum of twelve students, allow staff members to get to know each student on a individual basis. At CLC, our main focus is on education and personal growth. We create a secure and accepting environment built on a foundation of trust and mutual respect. This encourages our students to embrace learning - about themselves, their peers and the professionals with whom they interact. Our students learn the importance of accepting differences in race, ethnicity, and culture. They learn to recognize and accept the individual situations of different people.

ADHD and Children Who Are Gifted
Frequently, bright children have been referred to psychologists or pediatricians because they exhibited certain behaviors (e.g., restlessness, inattention, impulsivity, high activity level, day-dreaming) commonly associated with a diagnosis of ADHD. Almost all of these behaviors, however, might be found in bright, talented, creative, gifted children. Until now, little attention has been given to the similarities and differences between the two groups, thus raising the potential for misidentification in both areas-giftedness and ADHD. This digest provides specific differences between the two groups that will help parents and educators better understand and evaluate their children.

COMPUTER BASED SCIENCE ASSESSMENT:
IMPLICATIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES David D. Kumar College of Education

ABSTRACT
Computer technology can be invaluable for assessing learning disabled students in science since it opens up opportunities for developing innovative assessment tools in science education. The nature of computers as information processing tools, the role of computer technology in user-friendly interactive learning environments, and the possibility of designing instructional tools to meet individual needs of students, make computers potentially powerful tools for assessment. Computer-based assessment applications used in science, such as Computerized Adaptive Testing, Figural Response Item Testing, Computer Simulations, and Anchored Assessment can be appropriated for assessing students with learning disabilities.
INTRODUCTION
While exploring avenues for improving science assessment for the learning disabled students, one should not overlook the emerging role of computer technology in assessment. The following discussion will address how computer technology might be a promising tool for designing assessment environments for such students.
COMPUTERS FOR SCIENCE ASSESSMENT: IMPLICATIONS
Research and development of innovative computer environments for science assessment is a field that is slowly but steadily growing. A comprehensive review of computer applications in science assessment is reported in Helgeson and Kumar (1993). It should be noted here that this review did not find any computer-based assessment tools specifically designed for individuals with learning disabilities.

Welcome to the TechDis Website
The JISC TechDis service aims to improve provision for disabled staff and students in the further, higher and specialist education sectors through technology. Achieving this takes several routes. TechDis provides an advice and information resource via extensive web-based databases and an email helpdesk . These resources should be the first port of call for anyone in education who has a question relating to disability and technology.
The TechDis staff also pursue outreach into the community by delivering presentations and facilitating workshops at cross-institutional events. Staff development workshops are held monthly on a range of issues relating to disability and technology in education. TechDis are also developing standalone staff development resources on a range of themes to enable particular issues to be discussed in more detail within institutions and departments.

The Author's Description There are few published materials documenting the use of music technology in the classroom, so I hope that this book, full as it is of descriptions and analyses of real music in real classrooms, will prove useful. It records my personal investigation of ways in which technology can improve access to music for all pupils and, in particular, for those with disabilities. It considers two important questions: 1) Does the technology necessary to address each and every area of the music curriculum exist?
