Learning Disabilities (LD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
    What is a learning disability?
LD is a disorder that affects people's ability to either interpret what they see and hear or to link information from different parts of the brain. These limitations can show up in many ways: as specific difficulties with spoken and written language, coordination, self control, or attention. Such difficulties extend to schoolwork and can impede learning to read, write, or do math. For more general information on learning disabilities, please visit LD In-General in our LD In-Depth section.
[Source: National Institutes of Health, 1993] What are the types of learning disabilities? LD is a broad term that covers a pool of possible causes, symptoms, treatments, and outcomes. Because of this it is difficult to diagnose or to pinpoint the causes. Learning Disabilities can be divided up into three broad categories. These types of learning disabilities include:

What do Tom Cruise, Whoopi Goldberg, General George Patton, Walt Disney, Winston Churchill, and Alexander Graham Bell all have in common? These famous people have all been successful despite the fact that they had or have learning disabilities (LD). Having a learning disability doesn't mean you can't learn. Some of the most creative thinkers of all time were diagnosed with LD. People with LD aren't slow or stupid; they simply have trouble learning in certain areas, such as reading, writing, math, or communication. These difficulties are a result of the way their brains take in and process information. In fact, some people prefer to use the term learning differences instead of learning disabilities. Just because people learn differently, it doesn't mean they are unable to learn, it just means they need to find the way they can learn best. What Are Learning Disabilities?
Learning disabilities aren't contagious, but they can be genetic . That means they can be passed down in families through the genes, like many other traits we get from our parents and grandparents. Someone with a learning disability probably has other family members who have had some learning troubles, too - parents or siblings, for example. Kids with learning problems are sometimes surprised to find out that one of their parents had similar troubles when they were in school. These days, kids who have learning disabilities can learn much more successfully than in the days when their parents were young. That's because doctors, scientists, and teachers have learned much more about the

    Introduction
    • Websites should be made so that everyone can use them.
We have written some rules to help people make their websites easier to use.
Tell us what you think about our rules by emailing us at webteam@fpld.org.uk
    The Rules
    • Ask people with learning difficulties to help you make your website.
Write a guide for your website, which tells people what your website is for and what is on it.
Make sure the information on your website is accurate and interesting.
Put the information on your website in an order that is easy to follow.
Don't put too much information on one page.
Use simple language that everyone can understand.
Use the same design on all the pages and keep it simple and easy to understand.
Put the most important information in the middle of the screen.
Put things like buttons and links in the same place on each page, so that people know where to find them.
Put these buttons on every page: Exit, Home, Help, Next Page, Last Page.
Use pictures, colours and sounds to help people understand the information on your website.
