Definition
Laryngitis is caused by inflammation of the larynx, resulting in hoarseness of the voice. Description When air is breathed in (inspired), it passes through the nose and the nasopharynx or through the mouth and the oropharynx. These are both connected to the larynx, a tube made of cartilage. The vocal cords, responsible for setting up the vibrations necessary for speech, are located within the larynx. The air continues down the larynx to the trachea. The trachea then splits into two branches, the left and right bronchi (bronchial tubes). These bronchi branch into smaller air tubes which run within the lungs, leading to the small air sacs of the lungs (alveoli). Either food, liquid, or air may be taken in through the mouth. While air goes into the larynx and the respiratory system, food and liquid are directed into the tube leading to the stomach, the esophagus. Because food or liquid in the bronchial tubes or lungs could cause a blockage or lead to an infection, the airway must be protected. The epiglottis is a leaf-like piece of cartilage extending upwards from the larynx. The epiglottis can close down over the larynx when someone is eating or drinking, preventing these substances from entering the airway. In laryngitis, the tissues below the level of the epiglottis are swollen and inflamed. This causes swelling around the area of the vocal cords, so that they cannot vibrate normally. A hoarse sound to the voice is very characteristic of laryngitis. Laryngitis is a very common problem, and often occurs during the course of an upper respiratory tract infection (cold).

    What is laryngitis?
The larynx is the organ of voice. When we speak, two membranes in the larynx - the vocal cords - vibrate to make sound. Laryngitis refers to inflammation or irritation of the tissues of the larynx. It is the bane of performers and other professionals who depend on their voice for their art and livelihood.
    What causes laryngitis?
Almost every person has experienced acute (sudden onset) laryngitis, usually associated with a viral infection of the upper airways. But the inflammation can be caused by any kind of injury including:
    • infection
      vocal overuse
      smoking and other inhaled irritants
      drinking of spirits
contact with caustic or acidic substances (including acid reflux from the stomach)
      allergic reaction direct trauma.

    Definition
Laryngitis is swelling of the mucous membrane of the larynx (voicebox). This swelling usually involves the vocal cords, and and leads to hoarseness or even complete loss of voice.
    Causes
Common causes of laryngitis, hoarseness, or voice loss are:
    • Upper respiratory tract infection – most often caused by a virus, such as the common cold Irritation caused by voice overuse – yelling, singing, and speaking loudly for extended periods of time Airborne irritants – cigarette smoke and pollen, dust, and mold allergens Vocal nodules – benign lesions (similar to calluses) caused by thickening of the epithelial tissue of the vocal cords Vocal polyps – soft, fluid-filled lesions on the vocal cords; can be caused by one episode of voice abuse; may become cancerous, particularly in smokers

    LARYNGITIS
LARYNGITIS , an inflammation of the mucus of the larynx. There are three chief varieties: acute, c/ironic, and oedematous. The larynx is also liable to attacks of inflammation. in connection with tubercle or syphilis. Oedematous Laryngitis is a very fatal condition, which may occur, though rarely, as a sequence of acute laryngitis. It is far more commonly seen in syphilitic and tubercular conditions of the larynx, in kidney disease, in certain fevers, and in cases of cellulitis of the neck. The larynx is also one of the sites of Angeioneurotic oedema. In this form of laryngitis there are all the symptoms of acute laryngitis, but on a very much exaggerated scale. The dyspnoea, accompanied by marked stridor, may arise and reach a dangerous condition within the space of an hour, and demand the most prompt treatment. On examination the mucous membrane round the epiglottis is seen to be enormously swollen. The treatment is ice round the throat and internally, scarification of the swollen parts, and should that not relieve the asphyxial symptoms, tracheotomy must be performed immediately. Syphilitic Laryngitis.Invasion of the larynx in syphilis is very common. It may occur in both stages of the disease and in the inherited form. In the secondary stage the damage is superficial, and the symptoms those of a slight acute laryngitis. The injury in the tertiary stage is much more serious, the deeper structures are invaded with the formation of deep ulcers, which may when they heal form strong cicatrices, which produce a narrowing of the air-passage which may eventually require surgical interference. Occasionally a fatal oedema may arise. The treatment consists of administering constitutional remedies, local treatment being of comparatively slight importance.

    Laryngitis
Laryngitis is a common problem in which the vocal cords inside the larynx are inflamed. The main symptom is a hoarse voice. Symptoms range from mild to complete loss of voice. There may also be some pain in speaking or swallowing. The causes include infection, overuse of the voice, inhaling smoke or fumes, or a tumor in the throat. A common cold or flu can sometimes spread to the vocal cords. Other infections include tuberculosis, bronchitis, or sinusitis. Viruses that tend to cause croup in children may cause laryngitis in adults. Excessive use of the voice is common in certain jobs, such as teaching or public speaking. It can also result from cheering at sports events, singing, or shouting. Causes of chronic laryngitis include:
    • other chronic disorders, such as allergies or sinusitis
