Kleptomania 2.4 is a Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP utility that uses optical character recognition (OCR) technology to let you capture text from anywhere on the screen, including folder trees, file lists, database reports, messages, dialog boxes, menus, status lines and other text that may not be clipboard-aware.
Unlike ordinary copy or cut operations, Kleptomania lets you select text anywhere on the screen, including areas that you cannot highlight with your mouse, such as columns of data from a word processor or error messages from any Windows program. Kleptomania keeps track of all of your Windows fonts, even small serif fonts such as Times 8 and MS Serif 8, and can interpret text from all areas of your screen. The program can recognize underlined text (including web and e-mail addresses), as well as lines of text containing mixed fonts, font sizes, styles, and colors. Kleptomania can place the captured text onto the clipboard as plain text or Rich Text Format (RTF).

Dear Dateline, Your news story on Kleptomania, (1998), though one which captivates an audiences imagination and intrigues us as much as the notion of a split personality, perpetuates another social myth about human nature. I find it amazing that our culture has come so far as to call stealing a disease and to even have a "Doctor" looking for the right medication to "fix" this poor victims malady. I specialize in counseling theft offenders and was not at all surprised that the medications being tried have not been successful. Maybe a lobotomy would work, but even then it would fail to get to the root "cause" of this problem - good old fashion selfish greed, self gratification, thrill-seeking, doing that which is taboo and, an attraction to the forbidden This lady being portrayed as a victim of her "illness" is ludicrous. I found it interesting that on one had she was engaging in impulsive behavior and yet, on the other hand, she meticulously scouts the room out until she perceives it to be safe. I ask why, if she really is out of control, she steals items which can not only be worn by her, but are also the correct size.

ABSTRACT
K leptomania is characterized by an irresistible impulse to steal objects not needed for personal use or for their monetary value. Several recent case reports have shown that Serotonin Specific Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) could be effective in the treatment of kleptomania just as it is in other obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. We report five cases of kleptomania patients who were successfully treated with fluoxetine or paroxetine in combination with a psychotherapeutic intervention. In one case, the discontinuation of the medication repeatedly led to the resurgence of the kleptomanic behavior. Our case series illustrates the effectiveness of SSRIs in kleptomania. It thus supports the assumption that this syndrome involves a dysfunctional serotoninergic mechanism. OCD

Comparison Between Kleptomania and Addictive-Compulsive Stealing
True kleptomania has traditionally been viewed as a very rare condition, though Dr. Marcus Goldman, in his 1997 book Kleptomania (New Horizon Press), tries to expand upon the definition to include more persons. I named our support group C.A.S.A. (Cleptomaniacs And Shoplifters Anonymous) to include not only shoplifters, but people who embezzle, steal from others or from their workplace, or who are engaged in any other kind of repeated forms of fraud. I figured the term kleptomaniac is generally understood, therefore, as "someone who steals a lot but not particularly for the monetary gain". C.A.S.A. also created the acronym which, in Spanish, means "home" ("casa"). Since 1992, roughly 90% of C.A.S.A. members are people who steal addictive-compulsively; kleptomaniacs steal more impulsively . Note the differences. (Kleptomania is defined as in DSM IV.) Mental Health Disorders Impulse Control Disorders Kleptomania (impulsive stealing) People with Kleptomania usually do not steal because they need the object stolen; they sometimes secretly replace the object after stealing it. They steal "for the thrill of stealing," and they don't want to get caught at it. To be diagnosed, a person must have the typical pattern: recurrent tension leading to the behavior, leading to relief or pleasure after performing the behavior. The stealing is not accounted for by an external motive like hunger or financial deprivation or vengeance, or accounted for better by another disorder of which stealing is a part (for example, Antisocial Personality Disorder or a manic episode ). Kleptomania is rare overall, but more common in females than in males. It is obviously difficult to document the precise number of people with Kleptomania. People with Kleptomania often have another psychiatric disorder, often a mood disorder. Treatment is largely untested, and the disorder often persists despite many convictions of shoplifting. It may decrease as the individual ages, however. Visit this site on the web for more information: Shoplifters Anonymous Last updated

Causes of Kleptomania
Q. I am having a difficult time finding information on kleptomania. Is it a disease that people are born with, or does it develop throughout a person's life? What are the causes and cures/treatments? Is this a recognized mental disorder or a symptom of a larger problem? A. Let's start with the easiest part of your question: is kleptomania a recognized mental disorder? Yes, it is and is classified among the impulse disorders. It involves a failure to resist impulses to steal items that are not needed or sought for personal use or monetary value. Kleptomania should be distinguished from shoplifting, in which the action is usually well-planned and motivated by need or monetary gain. Some clinicians view kleptomania as part of the obsessive-compulsive spectrum of disorders, reasoning that many individuals experience the impulse to steal as an alien, unwanted intrusion into their mental state. Other evidence suggests that kleptomania may be related to, or a variant of, mood disorders, such as depression.

Prozac Used To Treat Kleptomania NEW YORK, Feb 22 (Reuters Health) Kleptomania, the psychiatric disorder characterized by an overwhelming urge to steal objects, can be treated with a combination of Prozac or similar drugs and psychotherapy, a study suggests. The treatment relieved the symptoms of kleptomania in five patients within 5 months, according to a report in the January/February issue of Clinical Neuropharmacology. After that point, the doctors reduced the dosage of medication, although this led to a return of the urge to steal in some patients, according to Dr. Elie Lepkifker and colleagues at Chaim Sheba Medical Center in Tel HaShomer, Israel. "In one case, the discontinuation of the medication repeatedly led to the resurgence of the kleptomanic behavior," according to the report. The patients were given either fluoxetine (Prozac) or paroxetine (Paxil). It is not clear why such serotonin reuptake inhibitors can help relieve the symptoms of Kleptomania, but the researchers suggest two possible explanations.

KLEPTOMANIA
You may have heard the term kleptomania before. People often have the idea that people with kleptomania are people who steal everything. This is not true. Normally, people who steal take something because it is worth money or it is useful. People with kleptomania may take something that is useless to them. These are signs of true kleptomania:
  • taking objects on impulse, without planning ahead
  • repeatedly taking things that are not valuable or needed for personal use
  • feeling increased tension right before the theft
  • feeling pleasure or relief at the time of the theft and
  • stealing without feelings of anger or revenge
Kleptomania is a rare condition. Most people who steal do not have kleptomania. Shoplifting is common, especially among teens, who may do it on a dare. In most cases, shoplifting is deliberate and people take objects that they want. Fewer than 5 percent of shoplifters have kleptomania. Some people with kleptomania keep the objects they take secret. Others may feel guilty and will try to return the stolen items. People with kleptomania may go months or years without taking anything.

Tuesday, January 23, 2001 U scientists study alcoholism drug's effects on kleptomania Benjamin Sandell Staff Reporter A drug meant to stop alcoholics from drinking might also keep kleptomaniacs from stealing if a University medication study succeeds. Psychiatric resident Dr. Jon Grant and associate professor Dr. Suck Won Kim, co-investigators in the study, are testing the drug Naltrexone on seven or eight participants in the study. Since late October, only one person has finished the study, but researchers said they are hopeful about the outcome. "The results look very promising," Grant said. Kleptomania, an impulse control disorder that creates an urge to steal, affects approximately 5 percent of shoplifters, said Gary Christenson, director of the mental health clinic at Boynton Health Service. "I expect there are more people out there with the problem than we see clinically," Christenson said.
