Kleine-Levin syndrome is a rare disorder that causes recurring periods of excessive drowsiness and sleep (up to 20 hours per day). Symptoms, which may last for days to weeks, include excessive food intake, irritability, disorientation, lack of energy, and hypersensitivity to noise. Some patients may also experience hallucinations and an abnormally uninhibited sex drive. Affected persons are normal between episodes, although depression and amnesia may be noted temporarily after an attack. It may be weeks or more before symptoms reappear. Onset is typically around adolescence to the late teens. The disorder is 4 times more common in males than in females. Symptoms may be related to malfunction of the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that governs appetite and sleep.

Common mental symptoms are confusion, irritability, restlessness, euphoria, hallucinations, delusions, and schizophreniform states. Attacks may occur every 3 to 6 months and last from 2 to 3 days. T he main symptoms are episodes of excessive sleeping and a trance-like state. T he onset of the disorder generally happens when a person goes to sleep at night in a normal way - only to wake up in a KLS sleeping episode the next morning. The KLS victim may attempt a normal function but is completely disoriented and stays in a confused state. KLS usually begins in teenage years. T he most notable symptom is the KLS victim sleeping as long as 23 hours a day - rising only to use the bathroom. W hen a KLS victim is awake during an episode the victim remains in a fog-like state and is unable to communicate in a normal way. D uring an episode KLS victims suffer a wide range of mental abnormalities. KLS victims require quiet surroundings - if disturbed they may become agitated or extremely irritable or very uncooperative. KLS is a disorder that comes and goes with a life of its own: meaning that the duration of a sleep episode may last for a few days to weeks and even months. KLS victims do not know when an episode will happen.
