Treatment of Kidney Failure at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville
There are two life-sustaining treatments for patients with kidney failure - chronic dialysis and kidney transplantation. Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville provides the full range of treatment services to patients with kidney failure. Outpatient dialysis is done at St. Luke's Outpatient Dialysis Center. Kidney transplantation has been available at Mayo since spring 2000. There are two types of dialysis - hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
Hemodialysis
Hemodialysis can be done in three settings:
  • Home hemodialysis. Patients and a helper can do the treatments at home after about six weeks of training. Self-care in-center hemodialysis. Patients, with minimal help from dialysis center staff, do their own treatment after three to four weeks of special training. In-center hemodialysis. The dialysis treatment is given in a dialysis center where many patients are receiving treatments. The treatments are given by trained dialysis nurses.
Peritoneal Dialysis
This dialysis procedure uses a patient's own peritoneal membrane (the thin lining in the abdomen that coats the outer surface of the intestines) to remove waste products and balance fluids. The dialysis solution flows through a thin tube (a peritoneal catheter) placed through the skin into the peritoneal cavity. The dialysis solution removes waste products and excessive fluid and is then drained from abdomen and discarded. The abdomen is re-filled with fresh dialysis fluid. Treatments are done by the patient, but sometimes a helper is necessary if a patient's vision or strength is impaired.

Acute kidney failure
Definition: Acute renal failure is sudden loss of the ability of the kidneys to excrete wastes, concentrate urine, and conserve electrolytes . ("Acute" means sudden, "renal" refers to the kidneys.)
Alternative Names: Renal failure - acute; Kidney failure; Kidney failure - acute; Renal failure; ARF
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The kidneys filter wastes and excrete fluid by using the bloodstream's own natural pressure. There are numerous potential causes of damage to the kidneys.

Caring For Pets With Chronic Kidney Failure
Chronic kidney failure is a relatively common problem both in cats and dogs. Although kidney failure can occur in younger pets, it is a progressive disease and is more commonly seen with increasing age. One of the ways in which you can help, is by feeding a diet which is specially formulated to keep your pet comfortable for months or even years, (longer than would be the case if the condition was not recognised and slowed). This leaflet explains more about chronic kidney failure, and how to manage diet and special care under your veterinarian's supervision, during convalescence and subsequent maintenance. Normal urinary tract function The kidney is the functional unit of the urinary tract. It is designed to filter and remove the waste products of body activity. The kidney is critical to regulation of water balance, so it is essential for survival.
  • Blood containing food and metabolic waste, water, and various minerals, is taken via the renal artery to the kidney and divides into a 'nest' of blood vessels, at the end of which is a filter and a receiving capsule. The kidney is a network of these filters and capsules. Only the smallest particles are pushed (by blood pressure), through the filters into the capsules. These particles include important nutrients, as well as wastes. Filtered water and useful nutrients must be reabsorbed back into the bloodstream, and the wastes allowed to move onwards into the bladder.

Kidney (renal) failure is abnormal kidney function in which the kidneys are unable to adequately excrete toxic substances from the body. Kidney failure has many possible causes, some of which lead to a rapid decline in kidney function (acute kidney failure), whereas others lead to a gradual decline in kidney function (chronic kidney failure). Acute Kidney Failure Acute kidney failure is a rapid decline in the kidneys' ability to clear the blood of toxic substances, leading to an accumulation of metabolic waste products, such as urea, in the blood. Acute kidney failure can result from any condition that decreases the blood supply to the kidneys, obstructs the flow of urine after it has left the kidneys, or injures the kidneys themselves. Toxic substances may damage the kidneys. Such toxic substances include drugs, poisons, crystals precipitated in the urine, and antibodies that react against the kidneys. Symptoms and Diagnosis Symptoms depend on the severity of kidney failure, its rate of progression, and its underlying cause.

IF MY PET IS STILL MAKING PLENTY OF URINE HOW CAN THERE BE KIDNEY FAILURE? In chronic kidney failure, urine is usually produced in excessive quantities. What the kidneys are failing to do is conserve water (they are failing to make concentrated urine). The body produces numerous toxins on a moment by moment basis. These toxins circulate to the kidneys where, dissolved in water, they are filtered out and urinated away. An efficient kidney can make a highly concentrated urine so that a large amount of toxin can be excreted in a relatively small amount of water. When the kidneys fail over a long time period, they lose their ability to concentrate urine and more water is required to excrete the same amount of toxin. The animal will begin to drink more and more to provide the failing kidneys with enough water. Ultimately, the animal cannot drink enough and toxin levels begin to rise. Weight loss, listlessness, nausea, constipation, and poor appetite become noticeable. It is common for animals, especially cats, to have a long history of excessive water consumption when they finally come to the vet's office with one of the latter complaints.

Prognosis Introduction One of the more common conditions encountered in pets, especially as they age, is kidney (renal) disease. This disease is particularly prevalent in older cats, and is called chronic renal failure (CRF). Click here if you would like to proceed right to the treatment of CRF. Cats that have kidney disease commonly have other problems that need careful attention if the kidney problem is to be treated successfully. Some of these other common problems are hyperthyroidism , heart disease, dental disease sugar diabetes (diabetes mellitus ), and high blood pressure (hypertension ) leading to blindness. This page describing kidney disease is very thorough. We have a summary page on kidney disease if that better suits your needs. Kidney Failure
The kidneys are organs located on either side of the spine, just below the rib cage. The body depends on the kidneys for several life-sustaining functions: the removal of waste products, red blood cell production, regulation of blood pressure and the control of the body's chemical and fluid balance. Kidney failure is determined when the kidneys can no longer perform the necessary functions successfully. With a significant disruption in the function of the kidneys, your child may be diagnosed with acute/short term (days to several months) or chronic/long term (permanent) kidney failure.
    Cause
Kidney failure occurs as a result of several different conditions or diseases. The causes range from the followingsevere infections, burns, poisonings, allergic reaction to medicine, obstruction (such as kidney stones, tumors or cysts), high blood pressure, or other disorders such as polycystic kidney disease, glomerulonephrosis, nephrosis and other kidney diseases.
    Symptoms
The symptoms of kidney failure are known as uremia. Uremia results when the kidneys are so diseased or damaged from injury that they no longer can clear waste products from the blood. The symptoms from kidney failure include the following:
