May 14, 2004 Email Page Printer Friendly Email GNN GNN News Alerts An experimental urine test that could be used detect kidney cancer in its early stages has shown promise in a recent study. The test is being developed for commercial use by Epigenomics in Seattle, Washington, and their collaborators. Early kidney cancer is notoriously difficult to diagnose, and as with most cancers, early detection and treatment are key. Most cases of kidney cancer are currently diagnosed using ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, or biopsies. In a trial of the technology, researchers used the test to accurately diagnose cancer in 44 of 50 patients who had the disease, including 27 of 30 patients with early kidney cancer. They also tested urine from 22 patients without the disease, and none tested positive. Equally encouraging was the fact that after the tumors were removed from patients, their urine showed no evidence of disease. The findings were reported at the American Urological Association Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California, this week. Once the test is commercially available, it would likely be used on people at risk for kidney cancer, such as those with a family history of the disease, smokers, or overweight patients, according to Cairns.

To Learn More About This Topic: Chat with Us Email Us Each year, more than 28,000 people in the United States learn that they have kidney cancer. Several types of cancer can develop in the kidney. Renal cell cancer is the most common form of kidney cancer in adults. Transitional cell cancer (carcinoma), which affects the renal pelvis, is a less common form of kidney cancer. It is similar to cancer that occurs in the bladder and is often treated like bladder cancer As kidney cancer grows, it may invade organs near the kidney, such as the liver, colon, or pancreas. Kidney cancer cells may also break away from the original tumor and spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. When kidney cancer spreads, cancer cells may appear in the lymph nodes. For this reason, lymph nodes near the kidney may be removed during surgery. If a pathologist finds cancer cells in your lymph nodes, it may mean that the disease has spread to other parts of the body. Kidney cancer may spread and form new tumors, most often in the bones or lungs. The new tumors have the same kind of abnormal cells and the same name as the original (primary) tumor in the kidney. For example, if kidney cancer spreads to the lungs, the cancer cells in the lungs are kidney cancer cells. The disease is metastatic kidney cancer; it is not lung cancer.

WHAT ARE THE KIDNEYS?
The kidneys are part of the urinary tract. They are a pair of organs found just above the waist on each side of the spine.
The kidneys remove waste products from the blood and produce urine. As blood flows through the kidneys, they filter waste products, chemicals, and unneeded water from the blood. Urine collects in the middle of each kidney, an area called the renal pelvis. Urine then drains from the kidney through a long tube, the ureter, to the bladder, where it is stored.
The kidneys also make substances that help control blood pressure and regulate the formation of red blood cells. BACK TO THE TOP WHAT IS CANCER?

Kidney cancer is also called renal cancer. Kidney cancer is the abnormal growth of cells in the kidneys. The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs found on either side of the spine or backbone. Their job is to filter out toxic products from the blood and to clean the blood. The waste is filtered into the urine to be removed from the body. Symptoms of Kidney Cancer include:
  • blood in the urine an abdominal mass in the flanks or abdomen pain in the lower side of the back, known as flank pain night sweats, weight loss, and anemia.
Risk factors include being a male, smoking, and exposure to industrial agents such as:
  • chemically tanned leather asbestos cadmium lead acetate used in newspaper printing and petroleum products
Screening for renal cancer is done with a routine physical exam and a urine test. High-risk individuals should be screened yearly. If cancer is suspected, additional tests, including x-rays, CT scans, blood tests, and others, will be needed to evaluate the kidneys.
