This is one of the less common types of cancer and it occurs more frequently in men compared to women. The vast majority of renal cell cancers are histologically classed as adenocarcinomas, these may be subdivided into clear cell and granular cell types (in some cases the 2 types can occur together in the same tumour). There are other less common types of non-adenocarcinoma kidney cancers including transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis. Wilms' tumour is another type of kidney cancer, which is almost exclusively found in children.

What are the treatments for kidney cancer? What is kidney cancer? There were approximately 27,600 cases of kidney cancer in 1994, accounting for 3% of cancers, excluding skin cancers. 85% of the kidney cancers are of the type known as renal cell carcinoma, which are the parenchyma, the "meat" of the kidney, rather than the drainage system of the kidney. Men are twice likely to have kidney cancer than women. A number of the kidney cancers have a heredity influence associated with diseases such as von Hippel-Lindau, adult polycystic kidney disease, tuberous sclerosis and a few others. What can increase the risk factors of getting kidney cancer? Risk factors include cigarette smoking, certain types of analgesics such as Phenacetin and obesity. A looser association with occupational exposures to Cadmium lead, asbestos, aromatic hydrocarbons and Thorotrast is known. What are the symptoms?

Kidney Cancer
What are the kidneys?
The kidneys are part of the urinary tract. They are a pair of organs found just above the waist on each side of the spine. The kidneys remove waste products from the blood and produce urine. As blood flows through the kidneys, they filter waste products, chemicals, and unneeded water from the blood. Urine collects in the middle of each kidney, an area called the renal pelvis. Urine then drains from the kidney through a long tube, the ureter, to the bladder, where it is stored. The kidneys also make substances that help control blood pressure and regulate the formation of red blood cells. What is cancer?
Cancer
is a group of diseases. More than 100 different types of cancer are known and there are several types of kidney cancer. They all have one thing in common: cells become abnormal. These abnormal cells grow and destroy body tissue and can spread to other parts of the body. Healthy cells that make up the body's tissues grow, divide, and replace themselves in an orderly way. This process keeps the body in good repair. If cells lose the ability to control their growth, they grow too rapidly and without any order. They form too much tissue. The mass of extra tissue is called a tumor. Tumors can be benign or malignant.

The primary function of the kidney is to act as a filter to cleanse the blood of waste products. The kidneys are composed of microscopic tubules that function as filtering units. As they filter the blood, the waste products accumulate in fluid, now called urine, which exits the kidneys via long tubes, the ureters, passing into the bladder where it is stored until it is expelled from the body. Fox Chase Cancer Center Research Shows Kidney Cancer Can Be Diagnosed In Urine
Fox Chase Cancer Center researchers have demonstrated the ability to identify kidney cancer, including localized (stage I) cancer, in the urine of affected patients. What's more, urine tests were repeated following the removal of the cancerous kidney and none of the tests showed DNA evidence of disease. These research findings were presented at the American Urological Association Annual Meeting May 8-13, 2004 in San Francisco.

A biographical report of my Kidney Cancer Cryosurgical treatment. Author Kenneth Henley. Revised 8th May
To contact me email: Ken Henley Home Page My Kidney Cancer Consultations ... Directory of Related Links I was one of the fortunate sufferers whose condition was diagnosed at an early stage which means that it is treatable. I will explore on this site the options that was available to me and the one I decided to take along with my reasons. My options were restricted due to my age of 80 years, I also discuss age ramifications. There is a good chance of full recovery if the cancer is discovered before it grows to 6cm. Above that size it starts to spread. RCC is difficult to treat and rarely cured once it has spread beyond the Kidney and current therapies have limited efficacy. In the conclusions I summarize my decision to have my cancer removed by cryosurgery and my operation which successfully killed the cancer. In the past, RCCs were diagnosed only after they had become quite large or symptoms of flank pain, blood in the urine, or palpable mass in the abdomen developed. But fortunately, most RCC are now found incidentally (during evaluation of unrelated medical problems) by imaging studies such as ultrasound, CAT scan, or MRI. The recently observed rising incidence of RCC may not be solely due to increased use of imaging studies but a trend toward increased detection of small lesions that are surgically curable has been noted.
