Renal cell carcinoma
A lso known as hypernephroma or clear cell carcinoma, renal cell carcinoma is the most common tumor rising from the kidney, with about 30,000 cases per year diagnosed in the United States.
  • Smoking is the most prominent risk factor, though many cases arise in non-smokers.
  • Diagnosis before the age 40 is rare.
  • Renal cell carcinoma can cause pain in the back, side, or abdomen, blood in the urine, and/or fever and weight loss.
  • Diagnosed early as a small tumor confined to the kidney, this disease may be cured by surgery.
  • If the tumor is large or has spread to the local veins or lymph nodes, it can come back months to years later after complete surgical removal, either in the back where the tumor was or in the form of metastatic tumors of the lung, bone, liver, or brain.
  • Sometimes, the tumor is so large that it has already spread as tumors in lymph nodes and other organs at the time of diagnosis, and in such cases surgery is not always helpful.
  • Renal cell carcinoma, once it has spread, can grow slowly or rapidly.

A simple urine test could one day be used to diagnose kidney cancer.
Scientists from Fox Chase Cancer Center in the United States say DNA from the disease can be found in urine. They carried out tests on 50 people with the disease. They found cancer DNA in the urine of 44. The DNA disappeared when they patients were cured. Speaking at the American Urological Association's annual meeting in San Francisco, they said the test may be a simple way to diagnose the disease. Rates soaring The number of people being diagnosed with kidney cancer has increased sharply over the past 20 years. Almost 6,000 people in the UK are told they have the disease each year. A simple urine test for kidney cancer would certainly be welcome
Professor Nick James,
Cancer Research UK However, rates vary considerably between different countries. They are much higher in affluent western countries than they are in developing countries.

If you or a friend or relative have been diagnosed with cancer, you will find much more detailed information on our patient information site, CancerHelp UK Summary Each year, there are over 3,600 new cases of kidney cancer in men, and over 2,300 cases in women. Kidney cancer usually affects people over 50. Men are more likely to develop the disease than women, and smokers are more likely to develop it than non-smokers. Kidney cancer accounts for just over 2% of all new cancers diagnosed in the UK. The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs on either side of the spine just above the waist. Their main function is to filter blood and rid the body of excess water, salt and waste products. About four in five cases of kidney cancer affect the tubes inside the kidney that carry out this filtering. A rare form of kidney cancer is Wilms tumour, which occurs in childhood. If kidney cancer is not treated, cancer cells can break away from the original site and spread to other parts of the body. Risk factors

What Is Kidney Cancer?
Kidney cancer is cancer that affects the kidney. As kidney cancer grows, it may invade organs near the kidney. Some of the areas it affects are the liver , colon, and pancreas . Kidney cancer cells may also break away from the original tumor and spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. When kidney cancer spreads, cancer cells may appear in the lymph nodes. What are the Symptoms? In the early stages of kidney cancer, there may be no obvious symptoms. As the disease progresses, some of the common symptoms are: Blood in the urine; A lump or mass in the kidney area; Fatigue; Loss of appetite; Weight loss; Recurrent fevers ; A pain in the side that doesn't go away; and High blood pressure What causes Kidney Cancer? The exact cause of kidney cancer is unknown. However, there are certain risk factors that are linked to it. These risk factors, according to the American Cancer Society, are as: smoking, exposure to asbestos, cadmium exposure, family history of kidney cancer, gender (men are twice as likely to get kidney cancer as are women) diet (a high-fat diet increases a person's risk of kidney cancer), weight/obesity, and long-term dialysis.

Primary kidney cancer, also called renal cancer, is a malignant tumor that originates in the kidney. There are two main types of primary kidney tumors renal-cortical tumors and transitional cell tumors. Renal-cortical tumors account for nearly 90 percent of all kidney tumors. Transitional cell tumors of the kidneys and ureters are similar to bladder tumors. Kidney cancer rarely strikes children and young adults; the exception is a pediatric kidney cancer called Wilms' tumor In this section you can find information about our expertise in treating patients with kidney cancer, our services, and our research.

University of Michigan Health System
Kidney cancer surgery safer at high-volume hospitals
Risk of dying one-third lower at hospitals performing many kidney operations
ANN ARBOR, Mich. Research has shown with certain types of surgery that the more often a hospital performs that surgery, the better patients fare. Now a new study by University of Michigan Health System researchers finds that patients undergoing surgery for kidney cancer are less likely to die at hospitals that perform the operations frequently. The study appears in the May issue of Urology In the first study to look nationwide at the relationship between surgical volume and mortality for nephrectomy for cancer, the researchers found patients faced a 32 percent lower risk of dying at high-volume hospitals compared to hospitals that performed fewer nephrectomies. "Following nephrectomy performed for cancer diagnoses, there were fewer in hospital deaths at hospitals that performed more of these surgeries. Our study confirms what others have found in different conditions, that surgical experience has a significant impact on outcomes," says senior study author John Wei, M.D., assistant professor of Urology at U-M Medical School. The researchers looked at 20,765 patients who underwent kidney surgery because of cancer at 962 hospitals from 1993-1997, based on data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, a random sample of 20 percent of all hospital discharges in the United States maintained by the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality. Patients underwent radical nephrectomy (complete removal of the kidney), nephroureterectomy (removal of the kidney and ureter) or partial nephrectomy.

Fox Chase Cancer Center
Fox Chase Cancer Center research shows kidney cancer can be diagnosed in urine
Fox Chase Cancer Center researchers have demonstrated the ability to identify kidney cancer, including localized (stage I) cancer, in the urine of affected patients. What's more, urine tests were repeated following the removal of the cancerous kidney and none of the tests showed DNA evidence of disease. These research findings were presented at the American Urological Association Annual Meeting May 8-13, 2004 in San Francisco. As with other cancers, an early diagnosis of kidney cancer can result in curative treatment whereas the prognosis for advanced kidney cancer is poor. The challenge in diagnosing cancer early is developing an inexpensive, noninvasive, accurate and simple screening test. A urine test meets these standards. "We used a common laboratory procedure to test the urine of 50 patients with kidney cancer," explained Fox Chase molecular biologist Paul Cairns, Ph.D. "Forty-four of the 50 tests showed gene changes in the urine that were identical to the gene changes found in the tumor tissue taken at the time of surgery." When the same test was conducted on the controls – urine from people without cancer – none showed the relevant gene alterations that were found in the urine from people with cancer.
