Kernicterus
Jaundice is very common in newborn babies and usually goes away by itself. Nearly 60% of newborn infants in the United States are jaundiced. When newborns are a few days old, their skin slowly begins to turn yellow. The yellow color comes from the color of bilirubin. When red blood cells die, they break down and bilirubin is left. It is normal for some of the red blood cells to die everyday. The red blood cells break down and make bilirubin. In newborns, the liver may not be developed enough to get rid of so much bilirubin at once. So, if too many red blood cells die at the same time, the baby can become very yellow or may even look orange.
Some ethnic groups are more likely to become jaundiced. A baby born to an East Asian or Mediterranean family is at a higher risk of becoming very jaundiced. Also, jaundice is harder to see in babies with darker skin tones. Some families inherit a G6PD (Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase) deficiency, and their babies are more likely to become jaundiced.
The yellow color does not hurt the baby's skin, but the bilirubin goes to the brain as well as to the skin. That can lead to brain damage.

Dangerous neonatal conditions may arise shortly after a child is born which, if not treated quickly and effectively, can place the child at serious risk of permanent disability or even death. Healthcare professionals should be vigilant and be aware of the warning signs of these problems and failure to act appropriately may mean that they are negligent and liable to pay compensation for any harm suffered by the child as a result of their inaction. The most common and serious neonatal conditions that give rise to claims for compensation for medical negligence include;
  • Hip Dysplasia is dislocation of the leg and the pelvis. Delay in a diagnosis is a frequent cause of litigation against those medical professionals responsible for neonatal health. Hip examination throughout infancy is essential and should be carried out at regular intervals until the child is walking normally. The child may develop the problem at any stage in development and all healthcare professionals involved in neonatal care should take every opportunity to check a child’s hips as delay in diagnosis may have serious long term effects. Hip dysplasia is often not diagnosed due to negligence until the child is walking and treatment at this stage often involves repeated major surgery.

Definition: Rh incompatibility is a condition which develops when there is a difference in Rh blood type between that of the pregnant mother (Rh negative) and that of the fetus (Rh positive). Alternative Names: Kernicterus; Rh-induced hemolytic disease of the newborn; Hydrops fetalis Causes And Risk: antibodies First-born infants are often not affected (unless the mother has had previous miscarriages/abortions, which could have sensitized her system) as it takes time for the mother to develop antibodies against the fetal blood. However, second children who are also Rh-positive may be harmed.
Rh incompatibility can cause symptoms ranging from very mild to fatal. In its mildest form, Rh incompatibility causes hemolysis (destruction of the red blood cells) with the release of free hemoglobin Hemoglobin is converted into bilirubin , which causes an infant to become yellow (jaundiced). The

Kernicterus is a type of brain damage that causes athetoid cerebral palsy and hearing loss. It also causes problems with vision and teeth and sometimes can cause mental retardation. In some newborn babies, the liver makes too much yellow pigment called bilirubin. When too much bilirubin builds up in a new baby's body, the skin and whites of the eyes turn yellow. This yellow coloring is called jaundice. Jaundice is very common in newborn babies and usually goes away by itself. A little jaundice is not a problem, but a few babies have too much jaundice. If not treated, high levels of bilirubin can damage the brain. Who can develop kernicterus?
