Arthritis In Childhood
(Juvenile Arthritis)
Arthritis in childhood? Isn't that only an old person's disease?
For both children with arthritis and the doctors who care for them public education is one of the greatest challenges. Most lay people and many doctors fail to realize that the problem exists. Many children suffer for months or years before the diagnosis of arthritis is thought of and proper treatment begun. But the problem doesn't end there. Children with arthritis frequently experience difficulty because their teachers and schoolmates don't believe children can get arthritis and have no idea what to expect from the child with arthritis or about the nature of the illness. As a result, when the child is finally diagnosed with arthritis the family may be told just to put them in a wheel chair because 'nothing can be done.' This is entirely wrong!! How common is arthritis in children?

It's possible. If she does have arthritis, it's most likely a form known as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). JRA is an autoimmune disorder, in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues. The symptoms of JRA are stiffness, swelling, and paint in various joints of the body. It can affect many joints or just a few. Symptoms are often worse in the morning before the joints get moving. Your child may be diagnosed with JRA if she has these symptoms for longer than six weeks and if other causes of the symptoms have been ruled out. JRA can show up at any age. (Girls are four times more likely to be affected than boys.) The difference between the adult version of rheumatoid arthritis and JRA is that kids often outgrow it, usually at puberty. Some children have only a single flare-up before the disease goes into remission (an inactive state). However, a chronic, severe case can be dangerous if it disturbs bone development and your child's growth. In most cases, it's possible to keep symptoms under control with medication and physical therapy. What are the different types of JRA?

Symptoms Treatment What Is Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Arthritis is a chronic condition that involves inflammation of the joints and the connective tissue around the joints. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is a kind of arthritis that occurs in children before age 16. It is sometimes called juvenile chronic polyarthritis or Still's disease. Mostly, it involves an inflammation of the connective tissue. The arthritis associated with JRA can come on quickly, or it can develop slowly over a period of time. The disease can affect a large number of joints in the body, or it may be confined to only one or two joints, such as to the ankle and knee. The number of joints involved is one way doctors classify the kind of JRA a child has. While JRA is seldom life threatening, it is a complicated disease, and its effects are difficult to predict. The most common problem for patients and their families is learning how to cope with long bouts of a chronic condition that can be very painful and cause deformities. There is often marked improvement, however, or even total remission of the disease when the child reaches puberty. And three out of every four patients with the disease eventually enter remission with very little damage that lasts. JRA can lead to serious complications, including a decrease or loss of vision and total joint destruction of the major weight-bearing joints.
