Article Abstract Brief Communication: Clinical evaluation of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) in chin cup treated patients Toshio Deguchi, DDS, MSD, PhD; Setsuko Uematsu, DDS; Yoshiko Kawahara, DDS; Hiroshi Mimura, DDS, PhD Corresponding Author Dr. Toshio Deguchi Department of Orthodontics Matsumoto Dental College 1780 Gohbara-Hirooka Shiojiri city, Nagano, Japan 399-07 The purpose of this manuscript was twofold: (1) to provide more information on the incidence of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) in chin cup-treated patients during and after active treatment; and (2) to evaluate results of functional analysis for one orthodontically treated chin cup patient with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain and difficulty of maximum mouth opening. Eighty-six out of a total of 160 chin cup patients responded to our questionnaire and were checked for pain, clicking, and maximum mouth opening. Twenty-eight of the chin cup subjects showed one or more symptom(s) of TMD. Spontaneous pain was found most often during active treatment but clicking (sound) occurred more often during the retention phase. One retreated patient showed remarkable improvement of TMD symptoms. This is mainly based on clinical research. For a long time the research of our department has concentrated on clinical research concerning fractures, posttraumatic deformity, joint disorders and bone healing. Over the last years the aim of our research programme has been to supply a scientific basis for orthopedic surgery. Clinical research is concentrated on prospective randomized trials to improve diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for several joint disorders. Development of instruments and operative techniques are based on anatomic studies and mechanical testing. Mechano-biological processes, and mechanical bone quality and adaptation of bone to endoprotheses are studied. This includes the role of fibrous tissues around implants.
