I hate people. In general they're unapologetic, aggressive, and dumb. It's a wonder we've evolved at all, and most days any progress we've made is highly questionable. The one human attribute I praise is our ability to be absurd. When I found out about the sport of Extreme Ironing, I felt something I haven't experienced since 1985 when I first discovered Monty Python: HOPE. Extreme Ironing is the combination of extreme sports, like cliff jumping or kayaking dangerous rivers, with ironing clothes. Phil Shaw created the sport seven years ago at his home in Leicester, England, when he used an extension cord to do his ironing in the garden. Later he and his roommate did their ironing while rock climbing, while skiing the French Alps, and atop giant trees in the Black Forest of Germany. There are about 1,500 Extreme Ironists worldwide, who use pseudonyms like Iron Lung or Cool Silk. (I've adopted the name Grilled Cheese.) The first Extreme Ironing World Championship was held in 2002 in Germany and was judged by German homemakers who gave points for quality of the ironing, style, and speed. Recently Shaw made his first American stop in Massachusetttettessettes and ironed while hanging off the side of a WWII amphibious vehicle driven through the streets of Boston. Next week, Shaw and his crew will iron while face-to-face with Lincoln on Mt. Rushmore.

and athlete's foot. Most people have small amounts of these fungi growing on their bodies. That's normal and isn't a problem. But if the conditions are right for the fungus, it will multiply and become an infection. These fungi grow best in covered up areas of the body where dampness is easily maintained, which is why they pop up so often on our feet and groin. Recent articles: Are You Sexually Healthy? Technically known as Tinea pedis, athlete's foot is simply a fungal infection on your feet, usually found in teenage and adult men. What does it look like, and how do I know if I have it? Athlete's foot generally comes in one of two forms: a dry, scaly rash on the bottom of one's feet, or dry cracks between the toes. The most common symptom of athlete's foot is itching. This is the symptom that usually alerts most people that they have athlete's foot. How do I keep from getting it?

    How to Treat Jock Itch
Jock itch is caused by a fungus called Tinea cruris that infects the groin, the inner thighs and sometimes even the buttocks. Treat jock itch and then be meticulous in trying to prevent its return. Steps: Apply an over-the-counter antifungal cream three times a day, or as directed in the product instructions, to get rid of the fungus. Treatment must continue for three to four weeks or the fungus will reappear. For a severe or persistent infection, see your doctor and discuss the possibility of topical and/or oral anti-fungal medication. Apply an antifungal powder containing miconazole when chafing aggravates jock itch. Wear a jock strap, or athletic supporter, to keep your genitals away from the rest of your skin. Keep groin area clean and dry. Wear cotton underwear.

    How to Prevent Jock Itch
You don't have to be an athlete to get "jock itch." The condition is caused by a fungus that is aggravated by friction and sweat. Steps: Keep your genital area clean. Shower after workouts. Dry your genital area thoroughly after showering or bathing. Dab talcum powder around your genital area, and where your leg folds meet your groin. Avoid powders containing cornstarch. Change your underwear frequently. Even if you wear 100 percent cotton underpants, sweat causes a buildup of moisture, which collects against your skin. Avoid swimming trunks with elasticized liners. The elastic bands in the liners can cause chafing and irritation. Avoid nylon underwear. Remove wet bathing suits as soon as possible. Wear loose-fitting pants and underwear. Sleep naked. Let your genital area air out.

Vomiting and Diarrhea JOCK ITCH (TINEA CRURIS) What is Tinea Cruris? Tinea cruris, or "jock itch", is a superficial fungus infection of the groin and upper inner thighs which most commonly starts in hot humid weather. It is caused by common fungus organisms that grow easily in warm, moist areas of the skin. A rash appears which is red to tan or brown in color, slightly scaly, and usually has a fairly sharp and distinct margin. There may be central clearing. It usually does not affect the scrotum and penis. Not every groin rash is due to fungal infection. Intertrigo (mechanical rubbing, and moisture), psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, candidal (yeast) infections, and several other skin diseases can mimic fungal infections of the groin. Back to Top Treatment Antifungal creams may be required. Miconazole cream can be purchased over the counter. If that is not helpful, several prescription creams are available from your health care provider in Student Health Services. These creams should be applied once or twice a day in a thin layer, spreading the cream at least a half inch beyond the margin of the rash. Treatment should be continued for one week after the rash goes away to prevent reoccurrences. If your rash is still present after 1 month, see your physician. Change in creams or oral medications may be needed.

After several months of treatment, President George W. Bush is ready to declare victory in his war against jock itch. "It was really awful for him," Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said at a press conference on Tuesday. "It caused him great irritation. He used to cross and uncross his legs so often at summit meetings, I thought he’d set his pants on fire. "Of course," Mubarak said with a laugh, "the fire was already in his pants!" Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf concurred. "It was very distracting, having to watch Mr. Bush scratch himself so frequently. He once said if he had to choose between jock itch and the Taliban, he’d choose the Taliban. I told him Ronald Reagan had to make that choice, and look where it got us." "There’s no reason he needs to spray so much of that stuff around," Vice President Dick Cheney remarked after one incident. "Damn kid’s probably getting high off it or something."

Jock Itch Jock itch is caused by a fungus that lives on your skin. The name of the fungus is Tinea cruris, and is related to the athlete's foot fungus. Jocks aren't the only ones who get jock itch - men who sweat a lot can also get it, and sometimes women. This fungus likes to grow and live in the warm, moist parts of the genital area, particularly the insides of the thighs. The rash makes the area itch, causes the skin to become red and sometimes crack or peel. You can help prevent jock itch by keeping the area clean and dry. Take time to dry your genital area and inner thighs after showering, bathing, or swimming. Make sure that your gym clothes or sports uniform fits you correctly and doesn't irritate the skin in the genital area. If you wear an athletic supporter, be sure to wash it often. To help prevent jock itch, you can put cornstarch or special drying powders on the area a few times a day (these are both available over-the-counter). To treat jock itch, you can buy sprays or creams that are also available at a drugstore over-the-counter. In some cases, your health care provider may need to prescribe stronger medication to kill the fungus either a cream, a spray, or a pill.

RE: Jock itch and Apple Cider Vinegar
Hello Slider: Actually, cider vinegar works pretty well on fungus infections. I have used it for years to go from a skin infection that drove me nuts to one that is an occasional irritation. Instead of baths, I bathed by wiping down with a couple of cups of cider vinegar. It sooths the skin and helps anxiety, whcih for me seemed to go with the skin problems. Recently however, I have found for vaginal infection (candida probably, a kind of fungus, sort of) that yoghurt works better. So, try that first, it is less stingy. Vinegar stings. Also, another help is MSM available in the health food stor. that takes away the itch, but puts the stuff in your blood and kidneys which makes you (me) nervous. I take cilantro to get it through the kidneys and eliminate and end the cycle. Keep up any treatment for a couple of months to be sure of completion. fungus hangs on.

    What is a Jock Itch?
    How does one get it?
Jock itch can occur in isolation but is mildly contagious and may be acquired in public showers or swimming pools. Sharing towels can spread the fungus. Wearing jock straps that have been kept in a damp locker without frequent washing is a common story for jock itch sufferers. Prolonged wearing of wet bathing suits or damp underwear will promote fungal growth.
How does one get rid of it?
Treatment with over-the-counter antifungal creams or powders is usually effective. It is important to keep the affected area dry and to wear fresh clean cotton underwear. Dry off thoroughly after bathing before getting dressed. If over-the-counter medications do not work within a few weeks, a trip to a dermatologist or family care doctor may be needed. In persons who are immuno compromised treatment may be more protracted and may require oral agents. Effective topical agents: Miconazole (Monistat-Derm, Micatin), Econazole (Spectazole), Clotrimazole (Lotrimin), Naftifine (Naftin), or Tolnaftate (Tinactin, Aftate).
