Overview Jock itch is a common fungal infection that affects the skin of your genitals, inner thighs and buttocks. The infection is characterized by an itchy, red rash in the warm, moist areas of your body, most often your groin area. Also called tinea cruris, jock itch is closely related to other skin conditions with similar names.

Overlake Healthscape Infobank
Ringworm and "Jock Itch" by Dr. Bill Crounse Although it's descriptive of the rash it causes, the name "ringworm" is a bit of a misnomer. It conjures up images of elongated, fleshy creatures burrowing beneath the skin. The fact is that ringworm has nothing to do with worms at all. Ringworm is a fungal infection that grows on the outer layers of the skin. A fungus is a kind of microscopic plant. The medical term for ringworm is tinea, and fungal skin infections are usually named according to their location. Therefore, a fungal infection that involves the feet is called Tinea pedis. An infection on the face might be called Tinea faciei. An infection on the scalp is Tinea capitis and an infection of the nails is called Tinea unguium. Prior editions of Healthscape have discussed Tinea pedis (also known as athlete's foot) as well as fungal infections of the nails. In this edition, we focus on a fungal infection that's of particular interest to men, otherwise known as "jock itch". Experts say that up to 75 percent of all men may experience "jock itch" sometime during their lives. Jock itch is the generic term given to any condition that causes itching, rash and irritation in the groin area. Most cases are due to a fungal cousin of the culprit that causes "athlete's foot". When a fungus infects the groin area it goes by the medical name Tinea cruris.

Jock Itch and Prostatitis
Jock Itch Jock Itch is an infection of the groin by the fungus which causes athlete's foot. The fungus is more likely to grow in conditions of increased heat and humidity common among male athletes who wear jock-straps. However, this condition is not limited to male athletes; women can also be infected. Some of the symptoms are burning, itching, and red, scaly lesions. Treatment involves the applications of such medicines such as Micatin, Cruex, Desenex, Lotrimin, or Tinactin until the rash clears; the infection may reoccur if the medication is not applied long enough. In addition, the groin area should be kept dry and clean and absorbent cotton underwear should be worn. Prostatitis Prostatitis is an inflammation or infection of the prostate, the organ between the bladder and the penis through which urine passes and the source of fluid found in semen. Prostatitis may result from a bacterial infection or sexually transmitted disease and is treatable by a course of antibiotics. The symptoms of Prostatitis include burning, discharge, fever, chills, and difficulty urinating.

Jock itch is usually an itchy rash in the fold of skin in the groin. Often the skin fold beneath the scrotum is affected as well. Usually the area is red and slightly scaly. It usually has a sharp border, demarcating it clearly from the unaffected skin. If you look closely at the border you may see small pimples. The rash spreads outwards and, as it does so, the centre may clear. What to do
Although sweat doesn't cause the rash, the fungus does thrive in warm, moist, sweaty conditions, so you can help yourself by:
    • not wearing tight underpants wearing 100% cotton underpants instead of synthetic fabrics drying yourself carefully in the groin and around the testicles after bathing or showering losing weight if you have a paunch looking after your feet to avoid athlete's foot (see Sweaty feet
Fungi also thrive on skin that is slightly damaged. One of the commonest ways of damaging skin is by perfumes in soaps, shampoos and shower gels and by enzyme washing powders so:

The infected area is somewhere below and on the sides of the scrotum and the middle portion of the penis. Is it recommended to use hydrogen peroxide to clean the infected area prior to using anti-fungal creams? Please answer ASAP. Thanks. Dear Reader, Tineus cruris, a.k.a., jock itch, is one of several maladies producing irritation in the groin that's the source of prolonged, embarrassing, and not-very-humorous discomfort. Caused by dermatophytes, mold-like fungi whose idea of a dream home is a moist, confined area of skin, jock itch primarily affects people, usually men, who provide such accommodations in the form of sweaty crotches. Particularly at risk are folks who frequent public showers and locker rooms, where thriving fungi have their heyday among damp towels, smelly jock straps, and wet floors. Dermatophytes are also responsible for the other common scourges of gym-goers and athletes, body ringworm and athlete's foot, which sometimes appear concurrently with jock itch. Keep in mind that itching and rashes in the groin area, and especially on the genitals, are often not caused by jock itch, and may be the result of something requiring medical attention, such as a yeast infection or sexually transmitted disease (STD). Consult a health care provider for a correct diagnosis because treatments will vary depending on what you have. Having said that, the symptoms of jock itch are:

    Jock Itch
    (tinea cruris) BASICS
Jock itch is a fungal infection that typically causes raised, red, extremely itchy, sharply defined lesions on the groin and may extend into the buttocks, inner thigh and external genitalia. Because they need heat and moisture to grow, fungal infections are commonly found in areas where skin folds, but may be found on any part of the body. Warm weather and tight clothing (which hold moisture and sweat) encourage fungal growth. A fungal infection may be found on another part of the body and be referred to by another name such as ringworm. (Don't worry, there are not worms involved; the name came about before scientists were able to identify the true source of infection.) Diagnosis of a fungal infection is made by a health care provider and may involve taking a skin scraping for microscopic examination or culture. Other conditions may look similar to a fungal infection. If you decide to self diagnose and treat, seek medical attention if there is no improvement within one or two weeks, or if the condition worsens. Transmission may occur by direct contact, (transfer by touch of one infected area to another, either on yourself, another person, or even a dog or cat) or by direct contact with a contaminated article, such as towels or bed linen.

Tinea Infections: Athlete's Foot, Jock Itch and Ringworm What is tinea? Tinea is a fungus that can grow on your skin, hair or nails. As it grows, it spreads out in a circle, leaving normal-appearing skin in the middle. This makes it look like a ring. At the edge of the ring, the skin is lifted up by the irritation and looks red and scaly. To some people, the infection looks like a "worm" is under the skin. Because of the way it looks, tinea infection is often called "ringworm." There really isn't a worm under the skin, though. How did I get tinea? One of every five persons gets a fungus infection at some time. You can get a fungus infection by touching a person who has one. Some kinds of fungus live on damp surfaces, like the floors in public showers or locker rooms. You can easily pick up a fungus there. You can even catch a fungus infection from one of your pets. Dogs and cats, as well as farm animals, can be infected with a fungus. Often this infection looks like a patch of skin where fur is missing. What areas of the body are affected by tinea infections?

    Jock Itch
Tinea cruris, known as "jock itch" or "jock rot," is a fungal infection caused by wearing clothes that are too tight or do not let air circulate. It usually occurs in damp, dark areas such as folds of the skin, especially in people who are overweight or if you sweat a lot from hot, humid weather or while exercising. It causes burning, redness, soreness, and itching on the genitals and the inside of the thighs.
Rubbing cornstarch on the affected area helps but sometimes a prescribed medication might be needed. Other things you can do include keeping the area clean and dry, washing your clothes frequently, and avoiding tight-fitting clothes. Don't try to wash it away - you might make it worse. You can buy over-the-counter medications for jock itch. These medications should contain the ingredient miconazole.
