Irritable Bowel Syndrome What Is It?
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder of the intestines that leads to crampy pain, gassiness, bloating, and changes in bowel habits. Some people with IBS have constipation (difficult or infrequent bowel movements); others have diarrhea (frequent loose stools, often with an urgent need to move the bowels); and some people experience both. Sometimes, the person with IBS has a crampy urge to move the bowels but cannot do so. Through the years, IBS has been called by many names colitis, mucous colitis, spastic colon, spastic bowel, and functional bowel disease. Most of these terms are inaccurate. Colitis, for instance, means inflammation of the large intestine (colon). IBS, however, does not cause inflammation and should not be confused with another disorder, ulcerative colitis. The cause of IBS is not known, and as yet there is no cure. Physicians call it a functional disorder because there is no sign of disease when the colon is examined. IBS may cause discomfort and distress; however, IBS does not cause permanent harm to the intestines and does not lead to intestinal bleeding of the bowel or to a serious disease such as cancer. Most people with IBS are able to control their symptoms through lifestyle modifications and sometimes medications prescribed by physicians. Following a special diet and stress management also can help to control symptoms.

Howard R. Mertz, M.D. Irritable bowel syndrome, a common disorder in which bowel habits are altered in association with abdominal pain or discomfort, has a prevalence of 12 percent among adults in the United States and a similar prevalence worldwide. By definition, no mechanical, biochemical, or overt inflammatory condition explains the symptoms. Validated, symptom-based criteria for the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome are highly predictive in the absence of alarming symptoms such as weight loss, fever, and intestinal bleeding. The pain or discomfort experienced by patients with irritable bowel syndrome often leads to health care use and a decreased quality of life. Diarrhea is a symptom that often leads to medical consultation, since it can be inconvenient and, if associated with urgency, may be accompanied by fecal incontinence, an altered lifestyle (owing to frequent trips to the bathroom), and anxiety. Constipation may be associated with bloating, discomfort

What is irritable bowel syndrome? Can Psychology Help? Absolutely. For those with milder IBS symptoms, use of over-the-counter medications and changes in lifestyle that ensure more regular eating and sleep routines, a healthier diet with increased fibre and water intake, as well as more regular aerobic exercise are usually sufficient to provide some relief. However, for those with moderate to severe symptoms, psychological and medical interventions are recommended. Treatments usually target specific symptoms (such as the diarrhea) or aim to decrease the triggers (for example, stress) that exacerbate the symptoms. Conventional medical treatment has included fibre supplements, antispasmodics, gut motility agents, and medications that act on biochemicals in the GI tract and central nervous system. At this point, reviews of the effectiveness of the medication treatments have concluded that they are helpful for small subsets of people with IBS, but have been disappointing overall in their impact. For the most up-to-date information on medication treatments as they apply to your situation, you are encouraged to discuss the use of these medications with your family doctor. Summary: Irritable Bowel Syndrome affects a large percentage of the population. Researchers in Sydney are looking for volunteers for a trial which aims to break down a vicious cycle between the irritable bowel and the brain. Below the diaphragm now to one of the commonest problems affecting Australians' intestines: Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It affects a large percentage of the population who experience recurrent abdominal discomfort, sometimes along with a sense of bloating and alterations in bowel habit, from loose motions to constipation in an otherwise well person who isn't losing weight.
Researchers in Sydney are looking for volunteers in a trial which aims to break what they think is a vicious cycle between the irritable bowel and the brain. It involves gastroenterologists and Professor of Psychological Medicine, Phillip Boyce.
Phillip Boyce: We don't really know what causes it, I mean there are some facts that are coming out. We do know that people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome have visceral hypersensitive, their guts are much more sensitive than normal people, particularly to pain or discomfort.
Norman Swan: So if you take two people, one of them who's hypersensitive and you give them the same stimulus, like eating carrots for example, one person will react to that, one person won't, that's because they're more sensitive.
