WHAT IS IBS? Your bowel is a muscular tube which stores and digests food. Irritable bowel is a disorder which affects the nerves and muscles of the bowel. This causes abdominal pain and irregular bowel movements. IS IT SERIOUS? IBS can be very distressing to those who suffer from it, but never leads to a more serious condition. It should NOT be confused with colitis or bowel cancer, and does not cause either. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Symptoms vary and can come and go. Attacks can last for days, weeks or months. Some of the following symptoms are commonly present:
  • Abdominal pain - often relieved by having a bowel motion or passing wind.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome What is an Irritable Bowel?
Medically, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is known by a variety of other terms: spastic colon, spastic colitis, mucous colitis and nervous or functional bowel. Usually, it is a disorder of the large intestine (colon), although other parts of the intestinal tract even up to the stomach can be affected. The colon, the last five feet of the intestine, serves two functions in the body. First, it dehydrates and stores the stool so that, normally, a well-formed soft stool occurs. Second, it quietly propels the stool from the right side over to the rectum, storing it there until it can be evacuated. This movement occurs by rhythmic contractions of the colon. When IBS occurs, the colon does not contract normally. instead, it seems to contract in a disorganized, at times violent, manner. The contractions may be terribly exaggerated and sustained, lasting for prolonged periods of time. One area of the colon may contract with no regard to another. At other times, there may be little bowel activity at all. These abnormal contractions result in changing bowel patterns with constipation being most common. A second major feature of IBS is abdominal discomfort or pain. This may move around the abdomen rather than remain localized in one area.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder of the intestines that leads to crampy pain, gassiness, bloating, and changes in bowel habits. Some people with IBS have constipation (difficult or infrequent bowel movements); others have diarrhea (frequent loose stools, often with an urgent need to move the bowels); and some people experience both. Sometimes the person with IBS has a crampy urge to move the bowels but cannot do so. Through the years, IBS has been called by many namescolitis, mucous colitis, spastic colon, spastic bowel, and functional bowel disease. Most of these terms are inaccurate. Colitis, for instance, means inflammation of the large intestine (colon). IBS, however, does not cause inflammation and should not be confused with ulcerative colitis, which is a more serious disorder. The cause of IBS is not known, and as yet there is no cure. Doctors call it a functional disorder because there is no sign of disease when the colon is examined. IBS causes a great deal of discomfort and distress, but it does not cause permanent harm to the intestines and does not lead to intestinal bleeding of the bowel or to a serious disease such as cancer. Often IBS is just a mild annoyance, but for some people it can be disabling. They may be afraid to go to social events, to go out to a job, or to travel even short distances. Most people with IBS, however, are able to control their symptoms through diet, stress management, and sometimes with medications prescribed by their physicians.

Alpha ENF The Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a collection of the most common digestive symptoms - nausea, abdominal pain, excessive gas or bloating, constipation and diarrhea. When these symptoms occur over months or years in the absence of a visible disease, Doctors usually diagnose "irritable bowel syndrome" (IBS). The Problem - Chronic or recurrent digestive symptoms The Solution - Complete Diet Revision using the Alpha Nutrition Program We are inclined to discard the old term "irritable bowel syndrome" and refer instead to the Reactive Bowel Syndrome The word "irritable" has always suggested irritable patients and "psychogenic causes". "Irritable" also suggests that the problem is minor and can be easily dismissed. The term "reactive" is useful because its points to food causes of the symptoms. The digestive tract reacts to things and provides information about its decisions in the language of symptoms. The term "reactive bowel" acknowledges that the gastrointestinal tract is a sensing, reacting system with important immune responses to food and other antigens. As soon as you say "reactive bowel" you have ask "reactive to what?" You then search for the cause in terms of food input and will often be closer to a solution.

What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome? Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common digestive disorder which can cause troublesome and persistent symptoms. These vary greatly from person to person, but usually include cramping discomfort, a feeling of fullness or bloating, and a change or disruption of bowel habit. This can range from constipation (difficult or infrequent passage of a motion) to diarrhoea (frequent or loose motions and an urgent need to go), or can alternate between the two. There is no accurate test for IBS. It affects three times as many women as men. Symptoms can start at any age but are more common between the ages of 15 and 40. Stress and lifestyle are major factors. The cause remains unknown. It is rarely, if ever, fatal. Symptoms Along with a lot of wind, the symptoms of IBS are: constipation that comes and goes; diarrhoea; and a colicky tummy (abdominal) pain. Causes The cause is unknown but it may be stress-related. Prevention Go for a high-fibre diet containing whole grain bread, rice and pasta. Eating plenty of fresh fruit can produce a remarkable long-term improvement in symptoms. Dairy products are often the bad guys. Try cutting out cheese, milk, chocolate, butter and cream from your diet for a few weeks to see if there is any improvement. Red meat, not just beef, can often seriously upset your bowel if you are prone to IBS. Use herbs that are known to ease the symptoms of IBS, for example, peppermint.
