What is IBS?
Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a problem that affects mainly the bowel ,* which is also called the large intestine. The bowel is the part of the digestive system that makes and stores stool. The word syndrome means a group of symptoms. IBS is a syndrome because it can cause several symptoms. For example, IBS causes cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. *Linked terms are defined in the glossary. IBS is not a disease. It's a functional disorder, which means that the bowel doesn't work as it should. With IBS, the nerves and muscles in the bowel are extra-sensitive. For example, the muscles may contract too much when you eat. These contractions can cause cramping and diarrhea during or shortly after a meal. Or the nerves can be overly sensitive to the stretching of the bowel (because of gas, for example). Cramping or pain can result.
IBS can be painful. But it does not damage the bowel or cause any other diseases.

irritable bowel syndrome. In addition, many people have irritablebowel syndrome without ever consulting their doctors about it.
http://www.mckinley.uiuc.edu/health-info/dis-cond/misc/irr-bowe.html
Irritable Bowel Syndrome GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
Irritable bowel syndrome, a condition marked by diarrhea, constipation and abdominal pain, is caused by excessive spasms of the large intestine. (It is also known as spastic colon, nervous bowel, irritable colon and mucous colitis.) Irritable bowel syndrome is not considered a disease as such because there are no organic abnormalities or physical changes. In many people, however, stress or feelings of anxiety, guilt or resentment seem to trigger the symptoms, It is probably the most common abdominal complaint brought to the attention of doctors, affecting one-third to one-half of all patients who seek relief from gastrointestinal problems. In addition, many people have irritable bowel syndrome without ever consulting their doctors about it. The condition appears in late adolescence or early adulthood. For unknown reasons, women are affected about twice as often as men. SYMPTOMS
The abdominal discomfort of an irritable bowel ranges from sharp, cramping-like pains to a continuous, dull ache. It is often relieved by a bowel movement. The lower left part of the abdomen may be tender to the touch. This abdominal pain usually appears after eating, although no particular food or type of food can be identified as the cause. There is also usually diarrhea, sometimes alternating with constipation. The diarrhea typically occurs immediately after a meal or when getting up in the morning, and there is often mucus in the stool. In addition, there may be other, less definite symptoms, such as fatigue, anxiety and difficulty in concentrating.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome in Children
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a digestive disorder that causes abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipationor some combination of these problems. IBS affects people of all ages, including children. IBS is classified as a functional disorder because it is caused by a problem in how the intestines, or bowels, work. People with IBS tend to have overly sensitive intestines that have muscle spasms in response to food, gas, and sometimes stress. These spasms may cause pain, diarrhea, and constipation. IBS may be a cause of recurring abdominal pain in children. The diagnosis of IBS is based on having abdominal pain or discomfort plus any two of the following:
  • The pain is relieved by having a bowel movement.
The onset of pain is associated with a change in the frequency of stools.
The onset of pain is associated with a change in stool consistency.
The symptoms must be present for at least 12 weeks in the preceding 12 months, and there should be no diseases that might cause the symptoms.

Endometriosis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome Q:
I have endometriosis and now after 5 years, I have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).  The doctor said I have some endometriosis on my bowel. How common is this for women?
-R.
Dr. Donnica:
Endometriosis is relatively common, but commonly misunderstood.  It affects one in 15 women, or 5 million Americans! Four in 10 of these women will have infertility as a result. While endometriosis is marked by severe cramping before and during menses, some women don’t experience any symptoms. In most cases, women are not affected until they reach their twenties or thirties. What causes endometriosis?  Simply put, some of the lining cells of the womb flow backward into the pelvis and implant on other tissues, such as the ovaries or fallopian tubes.  Being estrogen sensitive, these implants react cyclically. They can grow and cause pain, abnormal bleeding, and tubal blockage.  There are many things we still don’t understand about endometriosis: what causes it, why the symptoms are not necessarily related to the size or location of the implants, or what can be done to prevent it. Endometriosis is also difficult to diagnose conclusively without a surgical procedure called a laparoscopy. A laparoscopy allows your doctor to look into your abdomen and pelvis with a lit tube through a small incision beneath your belly button.
