I ritis
Iritis is the inflammation of the iris. If this is associated with inflammation of the choroid, it is called as uveitis (pronounced as you-v-i-tis). Many times retina also gets infected, termed as chorio-retinitis (Pronounced as ko-rio -retinitis) Causes Infections like Tuberculosis, Leprosy, Herpes virus infection, AIDS, Toxoplasmosis etc. Non- infectious causes like eye injury, Sarcoidoisis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis etc. How do I know it is Iritis? Besides redness, there will be pain in the eye, watering, photophobia (inability to withstand day-light), decreased vision . This tells you that it is not likely to be just Conjunctivitis. To distinguish it from glaucoma, you will have to go to an eye-doctor and get your eye examined. He will take the eye pressure, examine you on the slit-lamp and then will make the diagnosis.
Management
Tests are required to know the cause so, treatment can be given accordingly. Blood tests, skin tests, X-ray Chest may be done.

What Is Iritis?

The iris is the colored part of the eye you look at when you say a person has blue or brown eyes. Its function is to change the size of the pupil, the black-looking opening in the center that allows light to enter the eye. Iritis is an inflammation of the iris. It can occur in one eye or, less commonly, in both. Iritis is a serious condition, so do not treat it casually or ignore it, hoping it will go away by itself.
Symptoms
There may be no symptoms at all. Or, an eye with iritis may look “bloodshot” and may be extremely uncomfortable in bright light, sunlight, or the glare of automobile headlights. Pain or aching in the eye or brow can occur from the tightening of inflamed muscles as they constrict the pupil in bright light. The red color comes from congestion of blood vessels on the outside surface of the eye, which is a reaction to the inflammation. There may also be some blurring of vision.

The Radcliffe Infirmary NHS Trust Woodstock Road, Oxford OX2 6HE Iritis This is an inflammatory condition affecting the iris, (the coloured part of your eye). It can be associated with other inflammatory conditions of the body, for example arthritis, but in most cases the cause remains unknown. It is a common condition which tends to recur, and although it usually only affects one eye at any one time, it is important to realise that iritis can affect either eye. Signs and symptoms Aching, painful red eye with small pupil, blurred vision and sensitivity to light. Treatment It is important that this condition is treated at an ophthalmic casualty department, as it can be difficult to diagnose without certain equipment, which is usually not available at your doctor's surgery. The doctor will prescribe anti-inflammatory drops which may be used frequently at first, then gradually tailed off. You must not suddenly stop using the drops, or the iritis may recur. You may also need to use an anti-inflammatory ointment last thing at night. You will be given drops to dilate your pupil. This will cause blurring of vision and difficulty in focusing, and may also increase your sensitivity to light, but it is a vital part of the treatment for iritis. If the pupil is not dilated, the inflamed iris will stick to the lens, which can lead to complications. You may require intensive pupil dilating drops in casualty to ensure your pupil is dilated before you go home.

    Types of uveitis
An inflammation of the uvea is called uveitis. Depending on the part of uvea predominantly involved it is called iritis, parsplanitis or choroiditis. Iritis is the term used when the anterior part of uvea i.e. the iris is inflamed. Iritis is generally associated with pain and redness along with dimness of vision. Pars plana is the intermediate part of uvea between iris and choroid. There might be vague discomfort with mild clouding of vision. Symptoms are minimal. Choroid is the posterior part of uvea beneath the retina. There may be marked clouding of vision in the affected eye. It might also be associated distortion of vision i.e. objects might appear bigger, smaller or distorted . pain is generally minimal.
    Cause
In most cases of uveitis the exact cause cannot be determined and it is thought to be caused by an auto immune process i.e. one part of the body reacts against antigens released from another part of the body. Such cases are generally recurrent and many a times the recurrences might be spaced many years apart. That is why it is important for a patient of uveitis to mention about the history of uveitis to the eye doctor whenever there is a pain, redness or dimness of vision in the eye. Uveitis is also common following trauma to the eye, surgery or as a component of other eye disease such as keratitis ( inflammation of the cornea). Uveitis is also a associated with systemic diseases such as tuberculosis and AIDS.
