In the majority of cases there is no specific cause. Occasionally, iritis is just one symptom of a disease that affects other organ systems. These are called connective tissue diseases and include: rheumatoid arthritis , sarcoid , lupus , scleroderma , Behcet's disease , anklylosing spondylitis, Reiter's disease, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and B-27 disease. Sometimes, it is necessary to establish whether iritis/uveitis is a manifestation of one of these or some other underlying systemic disease. Your eye care provider may ask a detailed medical history, and may order a battery of tests including several possible blood tests, a chest x-ray, x-rays of the lower back, and a skin test for tuberculosis. The symptoms of iritis include light sensitivity, red eye, blurred vision, tearing, pain, and sometimes floaters

Iritis (Iridocyclitis) is an inflammation of the iris, the colored part of the eye. This condition is also refered to as anterior uveitis. It has been known to cause extreme pain, light sensitivity and sight loss. An iritis flareup usually occurs for unknown reasons, but is sometimes linked to certain diseases affecting the body, infections, previous eye surgery, or injury. There are several articles that link the HLA-B27 gene to iritis as well as many other auto immune diseases such as Ankylosing Spondylitis . While iritis sometimes occurs only once, most cases are recurring. Once treated the symptom will usually respond to various medications. However, the condition may become sight threatening when left untreated. Medication for iritis varies, treatment that works for one person will not always work with another.

Iritis
I ritis is the inflammation of the iris, the colored portion of the eye. Iritis, which is often the result of a disease in another part of the body, can be a recurring condition. A fairly common eye problem, iritis usually responds well to treatment. However, the condition may become sight threatening when left untreated. When left untreated iritis can cause a loss of sight.
Iritis, inflammation of the colored portion of the eye,
may cause a red eye or a small pupil. What is the iris?
The iris is a circular muscle near the front of the eye. Besides giving color to the eye, the iris controls the amount of light which enters the eye through the pupil. The iris is located behind the cornea (the clear protective layer of the eye) and just in front of the focusing lens. To see clearly, the proper amount of light must enter the eye. Just as the shutter controls the amount of light which enters a camera, the iris regulates the amount of light which enters the eye. The iris contains two muscles which control the size of the pupil opening. When too much light is present, the muscles cause the pupil to become smaller to reduce excessive light and glare. In dim light or at night, the muscles make the pupil larger to increase the amount of light entering the eye.

Background: Uveitis is defined as inflammation of one or all parts of the uveal tract. Components of the uveal tract include the iris, the ciliary body, and the choroid. Uveitis may involve all areas of the uveal tract; however, involvement most often is (1) anterior, (2) confined to the iris and the anterior chamber (iritis), or (3) confined to the iris, the anterior chamber, and the ciliary body (iridocyclitis). Posterior uveitis, also known as choroiditis and chorioretinitis, is uncommon, with the exception of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in patients with AIDS. Uveitis can be acute or chronic. The acute form is observed most commonly in the ED and is the main focus of this article. Pathophysiology: The exact pathophysiology of uveitis is unknown. In general, uveitis is caused by an immune reaction. Uveitis often is associated with infections, such as herpes, toxoplasmosis, and syphilis; therefore, the postulated immune reaction directed against foreign molecules or antigens also may injure the uveal tract vessels and cells. Uveitis also is found in association with autoimmune disorders, such as systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. In these cases, uveitis may be caused by a hypersensitivity reaction involving immune complex deposition within the uveal tract.

View of cornea and the anterior chamber of the eye as seen through the ocular microscope showing clumps of pus cells ( WBC aggregates ) sticking to the inner corneal lining. This is a sign of iritis . Iritis is an intraocular inflammatory disease. Iritis specifically refers to inflammation of the colored tissue inside the eye called the iris. The more general term for any inflammation of the eye is uveitis . Different forms of uveitis are given names depending on the tissues of the eye which are most inflamed. When the iris is inflamed , the term is iritis ; when the conjunctiva becomes inflamed , the term is conjunctivitis ; when the outer coats of the eyewall are inflamed , the terms used are either episcleritis or scleritis ; if the ciliary muscle is inflamed , the terms used include cyclitis , irido-cyclitis or pars planitis ; when the clear vitreous jelly is inflamed , this is called vitritis ; inflammation of the retina and associated choroid is termed chorio-retinitis ; inflammation of the optic nerve is termed optic neuritis . The symptoms of iritis can arise within a few hours or a few days .

  • Pain that may range from aching or soreness to intense discomfort
  • Small pupil
  • Increased tearing
  • Blurred vision

    Possible Causes
    • Most often, the cause is not known. However, iritis may be associated with various forms of infection that spreads to the eye from other body parts. Common causes include: Viral, bacterial, fungal or parasitic infections such as Toxoplasmosis, Tuberculosis, Histoplasmosis, Syphili, Sarcoidosis, Viruses (herpes simplex or zoster), autoimmune arthritides, previous eye surgery, injury or malignancies.
    • Collagen and or nutritional deficiency
    • Ulcerative colitis
    • Other eye diseases
    Back to Top Possible Treatment
    • Treatment is aimed at decreasing inflammation. Anti-inflammatory eye drops are often prescribed. Also, a dilating eye drop will often be used to relax the irritated iris. Laboratory tests may be ordered to determine a treatable cause of the iritis.

You are in: Eye and Vision Iritis Overview The iris is a circular, pigmented membrane that provides the eye its color and surrounds the eye's pupil.
The iris is made up of muscular fibers that control the amount of light entering the pupil so that we can see clearly. The iris accomplishes this task by making the pupil smaller in bright light and larger in dim light.
In some people, the iris can become inflamed. This is termed iritis.
