Did you know that some IC patients must choose between purchasing medication or buying food?
Our mission is to create new resources for patients who are struggling financially with their urologic disability. Who is the IC or pelvic pain patient in this family?
Children with IC
may struggle to receive an appropriate diagnosis because some doctors believe that noone under the age of 18 should be diagnosed. Teenagers with bladder symptoms often struggle with schools that don't provide restroom access. College students may be unable to sit through classes and complete long exams. A number have chosen to drop out. For the men and women in their 20's , IC can create obstacles in their careers. Driving and commuting may be difficult if not impossible. It may be difficult to sit comfortably at work. Some newly married patients face obstacles with their relationships and ability to have pain free sexual relations.

  • What Is It? Interstitial cystitis is a puzzling bladder condition, in which the bladder wall becomes irritated or inflamed, causing pain and frequent or painful urination.

interstitial cystitis. The urinary system consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. National interstitial cystitis Database Study Clinical Centers.
    http://www.duj.com/IC.html
INTERSTITIAL CYSTITIS The urinary system consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The kidneys, a pair of purplish-brown organs, are located below the ribs toward the middle of the back. The kidneys remove liquid waste from the blood in the form of urine, keep a stable balance of salts and other substances in the blood, and produce erythropoietin, a hormone that aids the formation of red blood cells. Narrow tubes called ureters carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder, a triangle-shaped chamber in the lower abdomen. Like a balloon, the bladder's elastic walls relax and expand to store urine and contract and flatten when urine is emptied through the urethra. The typical adult bladder can store about 1 1/2 cups of urine. Adults pass about a quart and a half of urine each day. The amount of urine varies, depending on the fluids and foods a person consumes. The volume formed at night is about half that formed in the daytime. Normal urine is sterile. It contains fluids, salts and waste products, but it is free of bacteria, viruses and fungi. The tissues of the bladder are isolated from urine and toxic substances by a coating that discourages bacteria from attaching and growing on the bladder wall. People with interstitial cystitis (IC) have an inflamed, or irritated, bladder wall. This inflammation can lead to scarring and stiffening of the bladder, decreased bladder capacity, glomerulations (pinpoint bleeding) and, in rare cases, ulcers in the bladder lining.

    What is interstitial cystitis?
Interstitial cystitis is a chronic bladder problem. About 750,000 Americans have interstitial cystitis. Most of them are women. People with interstitial cystitis have a bladder wall that is inflamed and irritated (red and sore). This inflammation can scar the bladder or make it stiff. A stiff bladder can't expand as urine fills it. In some cases, the walls of the bladder may bleed slightly. A few people get sores in the bladder lining. People with interstitial cystitis may have the following symptoms:
    • An urgent need to urinate, both in the daytime and during the night
    • Pressure, pain and tenderness around the bladder, pelvis and perineum (the area between the anus and vagina or the anus and the scrotum). This pain and pressure may increase as the bladder fills and decrease as it empties in urination.
    • A bladder that won't hold as much urine as it did before
    • Pain during sexual intercourse
    • In men, discomfort or pain in the penis or scrotum

    Definition
Interstitial cystitis is chronic inflammation of the wall of the bladder. Inflammation can lead to scarring, pinpoint bleeding of the bladder wall, and a decreased bladder capacity. Although the symptoms are similar to those of a bladder infection , there is usually no clear cause. The Bladder www.nucleusinc.com
    Causes
Because bacteria, fungi, or viruses are rarely found in the urine of people with interstitial cystitis, the cause is unclear. Possible causes include:
    • An autoimmune response that occurs following a bacterial infection of the bladder Bacteria that cling too tightly to the wall of the bladder A "leaky" inner lining of the bladder that allows irritating substances in the urine to come into contact with the bladder wall
    Risk Factors
A risk factor is something that increases your chance of getting a disease or condition. Risk factors for interstitial cystitis include:
    • Sex: female History of childhood bladder problems
    Symptoms
The symptoms of interstitial cystitis vary from person to person. They can also occur in cycles. Some people experience periods of intense symptoms followed by periods of remission. Pain can be severe enough to keep people from working or even walking.
