Compulsive, Impulsive, and Anxiety Disorders Program:
Internet Addiction he Internet clearly has a role to play in today's information age and will become increasingly important in our communications, our work life and our daily activities. However, like other powerful media, the Internet is also an avenue for abuse, leading people to exhibit behaviors that are counterproductive, isolating and destructive to themselves and their normal functioning. Some Clues to the Presence of Internet Addiction
  • Staying on-line longer than intended
Neglecting household chores to spend more time on-line
Often preferring the excitement of the Internet to intimacy with a partner
Frequently forming new relationships with fellow on-line users
Family or friends complaining about the amount of time spent on-line
School or job performance suffering because of the amount of time you spend on-line
Failing at attempts to cut down the amount of time spent on-line
Trying to hide amount of time spent on-line
Feeling depressed, moody, or nervous off-line, which goes away once back on-line

Internet addiction: evaluation and treatment Practitioners need to be aware of new type of addiction The internet is a neutral device originally designed to facilitate research among academic and military agencies. The way some people have come to use this medium, however, has created a stir among the mental health community, and internet addiction has become a serious topic of discussion. Addictive use of the internet is a new phenomenon that many practitioners are unaware of and consequently unprepared to treat. Some therapists are unfamiliar with the internet, making its seductive powers difficult to understand. Sometimes its impact on the afflicted person's life is minimised as many practitioners do not recognise the legitimacy of the disorder. This editorial reviews the diagnostic criteria, associated features, subtypes, consequences, and treatment implications of internet addiction, to help prepare clinicians on these issues in practice. The best method clinically to detect compulsive use of the internet is to compare it with criteria for other established addictions. Of all the diagnoses referenced in the

I would say the opposite is true. On Usenet you *can't* get away with posting nonsense, because there are thousands of "editors" ready to jump on your posting and gleefully shred it in public. With printed information, you're depending on the editor being competent to judge the veracity of the information presented. It's become routine, for me at least, to check on the net to verify things I've read in print media. Yes, you have to be a bit savvy, to find the groups where competant people are monitoring postings, but that's true in print too. You have everything from the electronic equivalents of the National Enquirer, to groups like, well, comp.risks.

(WebWoman) Hey, SurfMan, what time is it in Hawai'i? (SurfMan) Ack! it's 3:20 a.m., and all's not well. I've got a chem final tomorrow, I mean today. (WebWoman) Have you studied? (SurfMan) No. I've been cruising around online the past five hours. (WebWoman) Hey, Surf, get a life, man.
Unfortunately, SurfMan failed his exam. In fact, he slept through it because of his latest marathon computer session that had nothing to do with chemistry. Psychologists say that although Internet addiction is a problem for many people, college students seem to be especially vulnerable. "About 15 percent get addicted," says Dr. Leon James, who teaches computer psychology courses at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. "They end up spending four or five hours a day, or more, on the computer. Then other things in their life suffer." Adam Tolentino of Palolo, now a 29-year-old engineer and musician, admits that he was entangled in the Web while a student at UH a few years ago.

Got an opinion or a question about this article?
Come and talk about it in the spike forum D r Kimberly Young has made something of a name for herself in the last few years with her research into the phenomenon of Internet addiction. Having set up the Centre for On-line Addiction and written numerous papers about Internet addicts over the last three years, Caught In The Net is a distilled account of her findings. Young's book presents itself as both a case study collection and a self-help guide. Internet addiction is defined as the compulsive urge to continually use the Net, whether it be to spend hours surfing the Web, hang around in IRC chatrooms, or play on-line games. Young paints a disturbing picture of relationships being ruined, children being neglected and the addict's well-being being destroyed by their need for the Net. But despite her credentials as Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh, there is a distinct lack of scholarly rigour to Young's writings. There are few statistics presented for the reader's scrutiny or concrete arguments for why Internet addiction is somehow comparable with alcohol or drug dependency. In fact, the main basis of the book's assertions appear to be a questionnaire to which four hundred Internet users responded. Given the millions of Net users around the world, this simply isn't enough of a research bedrock to justify Young's fear of a "potential epidemic" of Internet addiction.

What’s the first thing you do when you awake? What a silly question you may think this to be! Of course brush your teeth! Ok that was indeed silly; let me rephrase it! By Prerna Salla, 3/17/2004
That thing called the Internet
What’s the first thing you do when you awake? What a silly question you may think this to be! Of course brush your teeth! Ok that was indeed silly; let me rephrase it! What’s the first thing you do when you arrive at your cubicle in the office…. I’ll tell you! Between the time that you keep your bag to the time you take your first sip of the morning coffee, you check your mails…. Why?
Well for several reasons…. First, it’s because you need to understand what you need to do next to save your skin (in terms of corporate politics). That’s precisely why you’ve got your mailbox in place right! So after the ordeal of mails end, your tryst with IE doesn’t stop there. Then there are those wonderful mails that are forwarded to you by your friends across the seas. And there are spams and spams galore!! So what is it that really gets you get there clicking on to the screen…
I’ll tell you! The big and never ending eternal world of the Internet, a world that’s growing each day and promises to stay that way, forever growing that is! I thought it was only me who felt it, but no… With better reasons to get hooked on to www, it’s no surprise then to watch us fall prey to the web. First there were the popular chats, then the variety of searches that sprung into even varied searches, groups, bolgs, information, pictures, courses, on-line examinations, job listings, matrimonial searches, glamour mags…the list is endless.

Since the 1980s, the widespread availability of personal computers and advent of the Internet and the World Wide Web have revolutionized society. In addition to channels of communication, the Internet provides a forum for the exchange of cutting-edge health information and resources. However, it has also created many health-related problems. Consider the following scenario: Background and Overview In 1962, the RAND Corporation began research into communication networks to maintain military command and control that could survive a nuclear war. By 1969, four West Coast universities became involved in developing computerized linkages and networks. Online communication made public headlines in 1976 when Queen Elizabeth sent the first royal e-mail message. In the mid-1980s, loose connections of networks (previously referred to as ARPANET) became known as the Internet; this development corresponded with widespread availability and use of personal computers.

Near-death by chat room
In a bizarre cloak-and-dagger, death-wish fantasy scheme, a 15-year-old boy in the UK "invented a cast of characters in a chat room as part of a plan to commission his own murder," according to this report . The boy (John) posed as a teenage girl for another adolescent male (Mark), then later "introduced a series of other characters to the chat room, including a second girlfriend, a stalker and two secret service agents modelled on Bond films."
"One of the agents, identified as Agent 47695, told Mark she had been assigned to protect John. Later she ordered Mark to kill the boy, promising him a gun, a large sum of money and a meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair as a reward."
Weird. And sad.

Narrative Psych
Other texts: This paper examines Internet addiction from the perspective of narrative psychology. A brief sketch of this perspective is necessary before proceeding.
Narrative psychology
A narrative understanding of human behaviour attends to the meanings negotiated around action, ranging from routine accounting to tall tales. This semiotic approach borrows primarily from the literary field in analysing these meanings. An often-used literary device in narrative psychology is the schema of four mythoi, developed by Northrop Frye. According to this literary theorist, narrative structures proceed in a cycle that includes romance, comedy, tragedy and satire. In romance, the individual triumphs over adversity and a new order is instituted. By contrast, in comedy the individual gives way to the group, which is refreshed by overcoming dissent. In tragedy, an individual cannot return to this world from the ordeal. And as a catchall category, in satire the preceding three myths are shown to be unrealistic. The four mythoi offer interpretations of episodes in which individual and group encounter threats to their existence. In the case of Internet addiction, a narrative approach attends to the implicit stories that are used to make sense of this phenomenon. This paper divides into two parts. The first part examines the meanings attached to the online experience. The second part views some of the narrative structures that contain the addiction phenomenon.

251 Treatment of Internet addiction
Information nets are interactional media that are characterised by interactivity and personality. People have started to use information nets more and more for social interaction. Being on the net has become a common past time. A virtual space where information is exchanged and people are entertained. Some think that the virtual reality of the Internet is so enchanting they may get carried away, their relationships may wither, their view of the world may become distorted and the use of the Internet may replace other activities entirely.
Net addiction refers to uncontrollable and compulsive use of the Internet, which, due to its intensity, causes various problems in other areas of one’s life. It comprises a relatively wide range of problems relating to behaviour and self-control. Net addiction can be divided into five subcategories:
  • online sex addiction net relationship addiction net game addiction information addiction and general computer addiction. When does effective use of the Internet turn into net addiction? You can look for the answer not only in the self-evaluation tests at the A-Clinic Foundation’s Addiction Link, but also by paying attention to the following warning signs:

Ernest Wolf of the International Council for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology raises the following questions:
I have read about some on-line aficionados becoming 'addicted' to their - I shall call it - psycho-cyber-world. Has anyone first hand knowledge of such addiction? Are these cyber-addicts just surfing or are they usually in some sort of interactive on-line relationship to others? What might be the dynamics of such addictions? What might be an appropriate therapeutic posture vis-a-vis such individuals? One could speculate that an intense interactive on-line relationship might fill certain needs for basic selfobject experiences. These could possibly provide mirroring s-o-e [=selfobject experiences], or alter-ego s-o-e. Even the idealization of the interactive other is possible with resulting idealizing s-o-e. Today [July, 1996] one could read in the Chicago Tribune that dangerously intense love relationships have developed. Another site at http://www.lolworld.com [now at http://www.thepalace.com/

The day has come when internet dating is considered a legitimate way of meeting new people in the endless search for the right person. Chat rooms have replaced bar rooms, and dating sites and personal ads no longer have the "stigma" that they once did. You may still get a raised eyebrow when telling people you are using the internet for your search for the perfect mate, but no where close to the reaction you would have gotten years ago. Internet dating has gained popularity by leaps and bounds, and unfortunately, so have the dangers and horror stories some have encountered. The anonymity of internet dating has afforded con artists a new playground for scams, and has allowed people to be anyone they think you want them to be because they are engaging you primarily through the written word. This site is not meant to bring forth the message that its impossible to find love through internet dating, but to inform people of the dangers that are out there. Internet dating is still a relatively new way of people connecting with people from all over the globe, and people need to understand the dangers out there so they can make their search a safe one. Included in this site or stories from those that have been there, and are willing to share their experiences with others in an effort to educate people and learn from their mistakes.
