Josh was 12 when his parents bought him a computer for his room, thinking it would be useful now that Josh was in junior high school. He immediately took to internet and soon discovered email and chat rooms. His parents watched over his shoulder for the first few weeks and discussed the need to be cautious with personal information and made sure that Josh was steering clear of pornographic and violent websites. As they became comfortable with Josh’s behavior on the internet, they no longer watched over him while he chatted with online friends and played online games. Problems soon arose, however. Josh began to spend most of his time in his bedroom with the computer, and he was moody when he was forced to spend time with his family. His grades dropped from A’s and B’s to C’s and D’s. He was irritable when he was away from his computer and often stayed online into the early mornings. When his alarmed parents removed the computer from Josh’s room, he became very hostile and threatened to harm himself. Josh’s parents quickly sought counseling for internet addiction.

Often the butt of jokes and ridicule, Internet addicts are seen as geeky types who sit for hours on end in darkened rooms, converse only in chat rooms and have virtual relationships with the complete strangers who live thousands of miles away. In the cold light of every day life, such people seem at odds with the normal world around them. While perhaps extreme, few realize that this stereotype lifestyle is very much the standard existence for many Internet addicts and that rather from being a joke, it is a huge problem that is affecting the Web generation all over the world.

Are You Addicted to the Internet?
by Lamar Stonecypher Are you compulsive in your use of the internet? Do you devote time to your online pursuits that would better be devoted to your family or career? Do you get up in the wee hours of the morning to check your email, or your favorite website? If the answer to one or more of these questions is yes, you might be suffering from Internet Addiction Disorder.
This malady was first described by Ivan Goldberg, MD, of Columbia University. He characterized it as a "maladaptive pattern of internet use, leading to clinically significant impairment or distress." (Source: Duchon) Psychologist Kimberly S. Young likens internet addiction to pathological gambling addiction because it "involves failed impulse control without involving an intoxicant." Young studied 396 heavy internet users from a pool of volunteers who responded to an ad. Participants were selected if they reported four or more of the following:
  • Feel preoccupied with the internet (think about it while offline)
  • Feel a need to use the internet with increasing amounts of time in order to achieve satisfaction;

    DEFINING INTERNET ADDICTION
Created by Andy Oliver To be diagnosed as having Internet Addiction Disorder, a person must meet certain criteria as prescribed by the American Psychiatric Association. Three or more of these criteria must be present at any time during a twelve month period: 1. Tolerance: This refers to the need for increasing amounts of time on the Internet to achieve satisfaction and/or significantly diminished effect with continued use of the same amount of time on the Internet. 2. Two or more withdrawal symptoms developing within days to one month after reduction of Internet use or cessation of Internet use (i.e., quitting cold turkey), and these must cause distress or impair social, personal or occupational functioning. These include: psychomotor agitation, i.e. trembling, tremors; anxiety; obsessive thinking about what is happening on the Internet; fantasies or dreams about the Internet; voluntary or involuntary typing movements of the fingers. 3. Use of the Internet is engaged in to relieve or avoid withdrawal symptoms. 4. The Internet is often accessed more often, or for longer periods of time than was intended.

Internet Addiction is a problem more common in society as Internet usage is increasing. The Internet can be informative, convenient, resourceful and fun, but for some, the addicted, these benefits become detriments. There are varying opinions on the subject. Some say that the Internet can be addicting to the point that it disturbs one's life and the lives of those around him. Others say that there is no such thing as Internet Addiction getting pleasure out of a computer is not the same as getting pleasure from cocaine or any other drug. Simple methods of prevention do exist that can reduce the negative effects of Internet use.

Internet "addiction": the effects of sex, age, depression and introversion Paper presented at the British Psychological Society London Conference 15 December 1998 Helen Petrie and David Gunn Psychology Department University of Hertfordshire College Lane Hatfield, Herts. AL10 9AB United Kingdom h.l.petrie@herts.ac.uk
Abstract A survey of use of the internet and beliefs and attitudes towards the internet undertaken with a self-selecting sample of 445 internet users is presented. Users who define themselves as "addicted" to the internet are equally likely to be female as male, and have a mean age close to 30, contradicting the stereotype which has developed of internet "addicts" as teenage males. These characteristics may reflect the fact that older, female users are more likely to volunteer to participate in research and that the proportion of female internet users is growing rapidly. However, using the Internet Use and Attitudes Scale developed in the study, it is shown that there is a significant relationship between high internet use and positive attitudes towards the internet with both self-reported depression and introversion, supporting the view that internet "addicts’ are indeed introverted, and more likely to be suffering from depression.
The current research used a questionnaire which was available via the internet between December 1997 and March 1998. The questionnaire included 27 questions to elicit data concerning use of the internet, beliefs and feelings about the internet and demographic information. One key question was whether respondents defined themselves as internet "addicts". Respondents also completed the Beck Depression Inventory and the Eysenck Introversion/Extroversion Scale. As respondents were self-selecting, they cannot be considered a random sample of internet users and this must be born in mind when considering the results. 505 completed questionnaires were submitted, yielding 445 analyzable questionnaires.

Future Implications Of Pathological Internet Use References COMPLICATIONS IN DIAGNOSING INTERNET ADDICTION Notions of technological addictions (Griffiths, 1996) and computer addiction (Shotton, 1991) have previously been studied in England. However, when the concept of Internet addiction was first introduced in a pioneer study by Young (1996), it sparked a controversial debate by both clinicians and academicians. Part of this controversy revolved around the contention that only physical substances ingested into the body could be termed "addictive." While many believed the term addiction should be applied only to cases involving the ingestion of a drug (e.g., Rachlin, 1990; Walker, 1989), defining addiction has moved beyond this to include a number of behaviors which do not involve an intoxicant such as compulsive gambling (Griffiths, 1990), video game playing (Keepers, 1990), overeating (Lesuire & Bloome, 1993), exercise (Morgan, 1979), love relationships (Peele & Brody, 1975), and television-viewing (Winn, 1983). Therefore, linking the term "addiction" solely to drugs creates an artificial distinction that strips the usage of the term for a similar condition when drugs are not involved (Alexander & Scheweighofer, 1988).

Internet addiction has been been the subject of increasing clinical interest, although it remains a controversial topic. While some argue that the Internet is merely a communications medium and cannot be compared to addictive stimuli like drugs and alcohol, others point to the growing number of individual cases related to overuse of the Internet seen in psychotherapy practices. Similar problems have been reported with overuse of video and computer gaming before the arrival of the Internet, so it not the Internet per se that created this type of problem. One of the first articles documenting excessive dysfunctional Internet usage that merited clinical attention is case study of a 43 year old woman preoccupied with chat rooms which eventually destroyed her 17 year marriage.

"Staying up late at night on the Internet is the best time I have at school," boasts Kim, a sophomore physics major and regular attendee of the kind of party we just witnessed. "After awhile, it was all I wanted to do, all I thought about. It was all so fascinating. In the chat rooms, I met a woman from Ottawa, Canada, who was a physics major at a university there. I don't see many women physics majors where I am. And I became close friends with a guy living in England, who was actually an exchange student from California. We connected over everything in life!" Kim got so engrossed in her Net world that she ignored her studies. A former math and science whiz in high school with serious career ambitions, she allowed her grades to crash before recognizing that her new obsession was sabotaging her goals. At least Kim recognized the problem. Most college students, sadly, do not. And as their numbers continue to soar, colleges have become perhaps the major breeding ground of Internet addiction. Here's a quick look at the major contributing factors:

Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD), sometimes called Pathological Internet Use (PIU), is a maladaptive pattern of Internet use, leading to clinically significant impairment or distress. Dependent computer users show a strong preference for interactive applications like chat rooms and Multi-User Dimensions (MUDs).
Non-dependent computer users demonstrate heavy usage of Internet applications such as e-mail and the World Wide Web.

Internet addiction is a new area of clinical practice and this article outlines sub-types and intervention techniques associated with Internet addiction recovery to assist therapists in assessment and treatment planning with this population. Internet addiction is typically defined as an impulse-control disorder that does not involve an intoxicant. Common symptoms include: a preoccupation with Internet use, lying about behavior, psychological withdrawal when offline, jeopardizing significant relationship, job, educational or career opportunities because of the Internet, and an inability to control use. Associated features of this disorder include sleep depravation, moderate physical complaints such as back strain, eyestrain, carpal tunnel syndrome and frequent time distortion when using the Internet.
Internet Addiction is a broad term covering a wide-variety of behaviors and impulse-control problems that is further categorized in five specific sub-types based upon the application that triggers the compulsion: 1. Cybersexual Addiction

Reid, a psychologist, leads a sex offender program at the Utah State Prison and has a Web site that deals with Internet safety.
The Internet is neither good nor bad but becomes addictive when it "affects other areas of your life," Reid said. The time one spends surfing the Net is one of the trade-offs, he said. Others could include sacrifices of work, school, family relationships and finances. Reputations can be damaged or destroyed through cybersex, he said.
Getting fully hooked on the Internet can take as little as six months, he said.

    Is the Internet addictive?
The Internet is big, complex and growing, but is it addictive? The media reports of Internet horror stories, and reporters have also claimed that the Internet can be addictive. Is this just another sensation story, or can the Internet be addictive? The following articles and discussions in mailing groups shows that, due to heavy Internet use, the lives of some Internet users become affected (e.g., falling out of school, splitting up relationships, receiving hospital treatment). Some of them used MUD's (Multi User Dungeon), IRC (Internet Relay Chats); others mentioned that they were addicted to news groups, email, gopher or even the World Wide Web.
A search on the WWW using different search topics revealed different WWW-pages from people who describe themselves as addicted or dependent to the Internet, journalists who have written about Internet addiction and people who are occupied with doing research in Internet addiction.
