What is Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD)?
What "Internet addiction disorder" (IAD) is still difficult to define at this time. Much of the original research was based upon the weakest type of research methodology, namely exploratory surveys with no clear hypothesis or rationale backing them. Coming from an atheoretical approach has some benefits, but also is not typically recognized as being a strong way to approach a new disorder. More recent research has expanded upon the original surveys and anecdotal case study reports. However, as I will illustrate below later, even these studies don't support the conclusions the authors claim. The original research into this disorder began with exploratory surveys, which cannot establish causal relationships between specific behaviors and their cause. While surveys can help establish descriptions of how people feel about themselves and their behaviors, they cannot draw conclusions about whether a specific technology, such as the Internet, has actually caused those behaviors. Those conclusions that are drawn are purely speculative and subjective made by the researchers themselves. Researchers have a name for this logical fallacy

Internet Addiction Disorder: Causes, Symptoms, and Consequences
Jennifer R. Ferris Psychology Virginia Tech jferris@vt.edu INTRODUCTION DEFINING INTERNET ADDICTION DISORDER "ADDICTION" AND INTERNET ADDICTION DISORDER Psychodynamics and Personality Sociocultutral explanations Addictions vary according to sex, age, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, religion, and country. Some addictions are more common among persons of different categories. For example, alcoholism is most common in the middle socioeconomic classes, in Native and Irish Americans, and in Catholics. Whites are more likely to use PCP and hallucinogens, but less likely than Blacks or Latinos to use heroin(Sue, 1994). Not enough data is available yet about those persons addicted to the Internet to determine if a particular class is most predominant. In addition, at this point there is not enough diversity among Internet users to make any definitive statements. As the diversity among users increases, and as the amount of research on the problem increases, hopefully we will know more about this interesting aspect of addiction with regard to the Internet. Behavioral explanations Biomedical explanations These explanations focus on hereditary and congenital factors, chemical imbalances in the brain and neurotransmitters. There could be chromosomes, hormones, and surplus or lack of certain necessary chemicals and neurotransmitters that regulate activity in the brain and the rest of the nervous system. According to this perspective, this would cause a someone to be susceptible to addiction (Sue, 1994). . There is definitive research that shows that some drugs act to fill in the synaptic gaps of the neurons in the brain, fooling the brain into sending out faulty information. This, it is thought, is one reason for the "high" one gets from engaging in activities such as running, drug use, and gambling. This might apply to Internet addiction, since many opportunities on the Internet are fun and exciting.

That you are neglecting your responsibilities? That you are becoming more irritable and unsociable? Have you ever stayed up until 3a.m. surfing the Web? Downloading music, backgrounds or porn? Well, if you've answered "yes" to at least one of these questions, then you might discover that you are, indeed, addicted to your screen and cyberspace. Computer/internet addiction was never an issue in the 1980s. That's because the Internet was not yet popular with the general public. Big companies and defense organizations were the first ones to ever start implementing the technology into their systems in the early '80s, and then a huge market was discovered for this technology to get bigÂ… very big.

Some people indicate they are addicted with only twenty hours of Internet use, while others who spent forty hours on-line insist it is not a problem to them. It's more important to measure the damage your Internet use causes in your life. What conflicts have emerged in family, relationships, work, or school? Let's find out. Parts of the following guide are contained in my new book, Caught in the Net This is a simple exercise to help you in two ways: (1) If you already know or strongly believe you are addicted to the Internet, this guide will assist you in identifying the areas in your life most impacted by your excessive Net use; and (2) If you're not sure whether you're addicted or not, this will help determine the answer and begin to assess the damage done. What To Do If You Are (Or Fear That You May Become) Addicted To The 'Net
A Special Report By Morton C. Orman, M.D.
Dealing with Internet Addiction is no different than dealing with any other type of addiction. Whether you are addicted to heroin, gambling, cigarettes, sexual deviancy, or eating Milky Way bars, all addictions have certain basic elements in common. The purpose of this Special Report is to review some of these common elements, so you can see if they relate to your own situation. While all addictions can ultimately be cured, this is not always an easy or painless process. A high degree of commitment to breaking established habits is required, as are persistence, dedication, honesty, and self-compassion. A. Denial All people who are addicted (to anything) have some degree of denial. Without denial, most addictions would not have become established in the first place. Denial can take many forms. At the milder extremes, a person may believe "I can handle this problem whenever I decide to do so." The fact that one has a problem is at least acknowledged. At the other extreme, denial often takes the form of: "What problem? I don't have a problem. You've got the problem, Dude. And besides, you're beginning to tick me off!" Denial can sometimes be so strong that a person's whole life begins to deteriorate, and they still maintain everything is "just fine." Jobs can be lost, marriages can dissolve, a person's health can become affected, and all of these things (and more) can be present for some time before the person ultimately recognizes there is a problem to be solved.

Use of the internet and poker machines to cope with negative states
    What is this study about?
This study is about using the internet or gambling to help cope with negative feelings. This part of the study is about problematic internet use. As you probably know internet use is growing at an incredible rate. Most people who use the internet experience few, if any problems. However, some people find that they do experience some problems with their net use. We want to investigate some of the reasons behind net use for people who have experienced problems.
    Who is eligible to participate?
We want to hear from people who think (or know that others close to them think) they have EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS with the internet. More specifically, we want to hear from people who use the internet to INTERACT WITH OTHER PEOPLE; this might be in chat rooms, in MUD's or perhaps via bulletin boards. We also want to hear from counsellors who have worked with people who have experienced problems with their interpersonal internet use.
