Dear David Byrne, I am fascinated to discover that the words to "The Man Who Liked
Beer" conveyed so wonderfully in your new recording were first
inspired in the Middle East, in an anonymous work called "The Man Who Was
Tired of Life" or "Debate between a man tired of life and his soul".
In the political atmosphere that haunts us, the piece's origin is especially
intriguing. An excerpt of the poem ["To whom can I speak today? Gentleness has perished
And the violent man has come down on everyone. Anonymous, The Man Who Was
Tired of Life, ca. 1990 B.C."] appears under the heading "Intermittent
Explosive Disorder" in the book A Primer on Mental Disorders: A Guide for
Educators, Families, and Students by Lee Crandall Park, M.D. (Spring 2001, Scarecrow Press www.leecrandallparkmd.net/pdfs/Chapter13.pdf The book says: A person with Intermittent Explosive Disorder has a pattern of sudden acts during which he or she is driven by violent urges to assault or verbally threaten someone or to destroy property. These acts are much more severe

Encyclopedia Index I Intermittent explosive disorder
Definition
Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is a mental disturbance that is characterized by specific episodes of violent and aggressive behavior that may involve harm to others or destruction of property. Usually, these episodes follow minor incidents and are out of proportion to the trigger. Description The DSM-IV decribes intermittent explosive disorder as one of several impulse-control disorders, including kleptomania (impulsive stealing), pathological gambling, and pyromania (setting fires). There must be several instances of failure to resist aggressive or violent behaviors that result in harm to others or destruction of property. Spurred by a minor incident, these acts are grossly out of proportion to the stressor. To be IED, these behaviors are not caused by another mental disorder (e.g. antisocial personality disorder, bipolar disorder , borderline personality disorder, or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder ). These impulsive acts are not caused by substance abuse or medical condition (head trauma or Alzheimer's disease Many psychiatrists do not place intermittent explosive disorder into a separate clinical category but consider it a symptom of other psychiatric and mental disorders. Future acts of violence may escalate, despite how it is defined, and treatment is essential.

In a harmless procedure, a swab is rubbed in the child’s mouth to obtain a few inner cheek cells for genetic analysis. Sometimes referred to as "Gene Mapping", this form of analysis has provided new insights into impulsive and aggressive juveniles. For example, LaHoste and his colleagues have recently found evidence for a genetic variant in about 50% of children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The gene was the D4 gene, one of several genes important for a brain chemical called dopamine.
