'Memento' recognition landed Christopher Nolan in the director's chair for big-budget 'Insomnia' Two years ago Christopher Nolan was in Hollywood trying to get Warner Brothers to hire him as a screenwriter on a remake of a gloomy and unusual 1997 cop vs. killer psychological thriller from Norway called "Insomnia." Warner's owned the rights to the film about a complex murder case in a town north of the Arctic Circle, where the sun doesn't set in the summer, and much to Nolan's disappointment they'd just hired a writer named Hillary Seitz to pen an American version of the film. So Nolan turned his focus to a low-budget noir thriller he'd been writing (from a short story by his brother), a reverse-chronological allegory of revenge and amnesia called

Phytotherapy aids in benzodiazepine withdrawal
The author, a phytotherapist and pharmacist, mentions 28 plants that are effectively used by the clinic for anxiolytic, sedative, muscle relaxant, antidepressant, and/or adaptogenic effects. Seven are singled out for detailed discussion: valerian ( Valeriana officinalis L. Valerianaceae), kava ( Piper methysticum G. Forster, Piperaceae), passionflower ( Passiflora incarnata L. Passifloraceae), manuka ( Leptospermum scoparium Hypericum perforatum L. Clusiaceae), ashwaganda ( Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal, Solanaceae), and schisandra ( Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baillon, Schisandraceae).
Part of the author's rationale for using these plants is that some of them contain constituents shown to act as agonists at the central benzodiazepine receptors in a manner similar to the drugs themselves. Kava, Passiflora incarnata and P. coerulea

Insomnia , a compelling thriller from first- time Scandinavian director Erik Skjoldbjaerg, occurs in a state of perpetual light. The setting is north of the Arctic circle in the middle of summer. At that time and place, we have entered the land of the midnight sun, a strange world where daylight holds court twenty-four hours a day. Yet, even in such bright circumstances, the darkest impulses of the human soul can not always be held at bay. Insomnia starts out like a relatively traditional murder mystery - the kind of thing that might play on any episode of the PBS TV series

Help for Insomnia
Q:
Lately, I have been having a lot of trouble sleeping. I've tried several over-the-counter medications and am relying more on caffeine during the days to stay awake. What can I do to get more rest?
A:
  • Set a regular schedule for sleep, with a heavy emphasis on stable bedtime routines.
  • Exercise regularly, but avoid heavy exercise before bedtime.
  • Avoid taking naps.
  • Beginning 30 minutes before bedtime, provide a wind-down period with no TV, loud music or other stimulation.
  • Reserve the bedroom for sleep only.
  • Go to bed when ready to sleep and leave the bedroom if unable to sleep after 30 minutes.
  • Avoid the use of alcohol or over-the-counter sleep medications as sleep inducers.
  • Try not to rely in caffeine to stay awake, especially later in the day.
Often worry keeps us awake. Part of what we have learned recently is that we are not in control of our lives the way we once thought. One way to deal with this is through prayer and meditation, and taking the things we cannot affect and giving them over to God. I can think of few better ways to end the day and improve the likelihood of a better night's sleep.

Reviewed by Paul Byrnes September 5 2002 Absorbing contest ... Pacino and Williams grapple for power in Insomnia. Related links: Christopher Nolan on directing Insomnia Nolan tries a non-sleeper Norway is my way, says Nolan Directed by Christopher Nolan Written by Hillary Seitz, based on a Norwegian film of the same name Rated M Cinemas everywhere Insomnia is a remake of a 1997 Norwegian thriller, in which Stellan Skarsgard was a sleep-deprived Swedish detective in the endless daylight of a northern summer. Al Pacino is sleepless in Alaska in the remake. Most of the plot is the same, but the film has a different tone, partly because Robin Williams plays the antagonist. This strange pairing works pretty well. Pacino has built a mighty career on credibility, his total conviction in playing men under stress, a lot of them cops. Williams has built a career on incredibility, playing geeky guys with unwieldy talents like Adrian Cronauer and Patch Adams. Many of them aren't even human, such as Mork the alien, or the robot in Bicentennial Man . Williams finds playing humans hard, so he often resorts to childish emotions and mawkishness, as though he hasn't yet learned the subtler ways of our planet.

Very unexpectadly ickle wifty arrived on his due date. This entry describes how his arrival came about. Sat Dec 28th, I had a 'show' which was a slightly bloody mucas loss. Sun Dec 29th, I had a small loss of water which I thought was my waters breaking. Mon 30th Dec, I realised that I hadn't felt ickle wifty move for some time so I decided to pop into the hospital and just get baby monitored. I expected to have 20 minutes of monitoring, realise everything was ok and go home that's not quite what happened. I was strapped to the monitor and baby's heart beat was not as it should have been. They like the trace to have lots of movement up an down but ickle wifty's was very narrow and then it bottomed out. I was told not to worry and then sent for a scan. One of the consultants carried out the scan (although no one actually told me who he was) and he said that baby was fine but that I had a calcified placenta (no one could explain how that had happened but it meant that the placenta was no longer doing it's job properly) and that there was no benefit to ickle wifty for him to stay inside, and that they would either induce me or perform a c-section depending on the heartbeat. I was only 1cm dialated so in theory an epidural wasn't possible but as my waters had broken and I was going on a drip to speed things up they let me have one. I was moved to a delivery suite and an anestatist put the epidural in at which point I was very sick. Baby was constantly monitored as they were still worried about his heart rate. Yhey used a new machine called 'Stan' and put a clip onto babie's head to get a good trace. All the time I was monitored I was told I may have to have a c-section.
