Insomnia
DEFINITION :
Insomnia or sleeplessness is a common complaint of women as they enter into menopause. Insomnia means having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep or the feeling that your sleep was not adequate for you. For women who are having hot flashes at night, called night sweats, their sleep is broken by frequent awakening and therefore not refreshing or restorative. Generally once the hot flashes or night sweats are controlled a normal sleep pattern returns. If it doesn't it may be, or have become chronic insomnia. How do you know? CAUSES :
If you suffer from insomnia every night or most nights for a period of one month then you have chronic insomnia. If you're not having hot flashes or night sweats then it's time to look for other causes of sleeplessness. Depression and anxiety disorders are the most common causes of chronic insomnia. If you feel depressed you need to be evaluated by a qualified health care provider. Movement disorders such as restless leg syndrome are second on the list of causes of insomnia for them; there are new medications that may help. Other common causes are shift working, respiratory disorders and pain. TREATMENTS :
In up to 30% of people with chronic insomnia no cause can be identified. Medical treatment of these people has generally been with hypnotic drugs (sleeping pills). It is estimated that 25% of the adult population in America took some type of medication for sleep last year. It is generally agreed that sleeping pills should only be in the lowest dose and for the shortest possible time.

William Wordsworth in "To Sleep" (1806) For years, there were no refreshing lulls between days for Lauren Ero. Rather than waking up feeling clearheaded and healthy, the 37-year-old mother of two spent four years perpetually listless and moody. "Those years are like a fog to me. I just remember how hard it was and how hopeless I felt," she says. "I would be more tired in the morning than when I went to bed the night before. I was too exhausted to do even day-to-day activities like taking care of my kids and things around the house." Ero was suffering not from depression, as one doctor surmised based on her look-alike symptoms of despondent mood and irritability, but from insomnia. The definition of insomnia, according to the American Sleep Disorders Association (ASDA), is difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. If it occurs every night or most nights for an extended time, like Ero's, it's called chronic insomnia. According to ASDA estimates, more than 35 million Americans suffer from this long-lasting type of insomnia, with 20 to 30 million others suffering shorter-term sleeplessness. Men and women of all ages experience insomnia, but it is more common in the elderly and in women, especially after menopause. The consequences of a

Treatment of snoring, sleep apnea, insomnia, night terrors, sleep walking, bed wetting and narcolepsy.
http://Texassleepdisorders.com
At Texas Regional Sleep Disorder Center, our approach to snoring and sleep apnea is comprehensive. Snoring is caused by an obstruction of air while one Is sleeping as it passes through the nose and to the back of the throat, or pharynx. Many times the snoring is not serious enough to cause any physical illness. Other times the snoring is a symptom of a very severe obstruction of breathing and the body has to work to breath to maintain normal bodily functions. If one has sleep apnea, breathing can stop for up to five minutes and during this time, when the breathing has stopped, the pulse increases and the blood pressure increases so as to give emergency needs of oxygen to the body. If this process Is allowed to progress then the individual having this is more prone to permanent high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, leading to stroke and sudden death. Sleep apnea can affect people of all ages. Children get sleep apnea from enlarged tonsils and adenoids. This can happen in a newborn. This is usually manifested in children by fatigue, irritability, and of course, the audible snoring and breathing sensations. Breathing obstruction can be either in the nose or in the oral pharynx. In the nose, it is caused by cartilaginous or bony obstruction of the nasal septum which divides the nose into right and left compartments. It also can be caused by chronic sinusitis when one assumes the recumbent position, the infectious material rolls out of the paranasal sinuses and stops us the nose making one breathe through their mouth. After a period of time, this gasping for air through the mouth causes elongation of the soft palate and uvula, and later the tongue will press against the soft palate and uvula which has been elongated by this sleep apnea process, and breathing will stop.

To sleep, perchance to dream: All about insomnia
July 13, 1999 Web posted at: 9:45 AM EDT (1345 GMT) In this story: Kinds of sleep disorders Three conditions that can disturb sleep Parasomnias Different treatments ... RELATEDS By Ronald Pies, M.D. (WebMD) The writer Fran Leibowitz once quipped that life is what you do when you can't get to sleep. Indeed, for many of us, getting a good night's sleep is an important but elusive goal. Up to 30 percent of the general population suffers from insomnia, and half of this group experiences the problem as serious. Up to 90 percent of older people report some type of sleep problem. And drowsiness at the wheel may account for 30 percent of fatal driving accidents. Kinds of sleep disorders Sleep disorders are divided into several types: difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep (insomnia), excessive daytime sleepiness (hypersomnia), abnormal timing of sleep-wake cycles (circadian rhythm disorder), and abnormal stages of sleep (parasomnia). Occasional trouble falling or staying asleep is normal and usually due to transient stress. But when insomnia continues for weeks or months, it's important to consider possible causes.

Are You Getting all the ZZZs You Need?
Does it often take you more than 30 minutes to fall asleep at night? Or do you wake up frequently during the night - or too early in the morning - and have a hard time going back to sleep? When you awaken, do you feel groggy and lethargic? Do you feel drowsy during the day particularly during monotonous situations?
If you answered "yes" to any one of these questions, you may have a "sleep debt" that is affecting you in ways you don't even realize. And, you aren't alone. A recent NSF "Sleep in America" poll found that 60% of American adults experience sleep problems. However, few recognize the importance of adequate rest, or are aware that effective methods of preventing and managing sleep problems now exist.

More than 84 million Americans are affected by insomnia, women more often than men. Although only 41% of women think they've had insomnia in the past year, 53% of those aged 30 to 60 experienced insomnia in the past month. Detailed Information
  • Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder. It varies from restless sleep to, more rarely, complete wakefulness.
  • Although most adults need seven or eight hours of sleep per night, many underestimate the amount they actually get. Usually, an unbroken night's sleep is no cause for concern. If it begins to affect daytime performance, however, it may be a problem.
  • The most common types of insomnia transient and intermittent may go away on their own or with a doctor's prescription of sleeping pills. Transient insomnia may last from one night to a few weeks. You may have intermittent insomnia if you experience transient insomnia every so often.
  • Chronic insomnia lasts a month or more and may be treated with relaxation therapy, reconditioning, sleep restriction or sleeping pills.

Christopher Nolan's first film since his limelight-grabbing, a-chronological indie hit Memento (2000) is blessed with a cast headed by three Oscar winners: Al Pacino as an LA detective investigating a murder in Alaska, Robin Williams as a reclusive novelist, and Hilary Swank as a local cop. And yet watching Insomnia is like playing crazy golf with Tiger Woods. The whole is far less than the sum of the parts, which is a pity because Insomnia could have taken us to unfamiliar places (it is set in one - a small Alaskan town). But maybe we should be wary of asking too much of Nolan. After all, this 32-year-old Brit has in the space of four years moved from the humble origins of the self-financed mini-feature Following (1998) , shot over several weekends on the streets of London, via critical and cult praise for Memento , to this glossy (if glassy) thriller, a remake of a Norwegian film from a few years back. Perhaps it was all he could do to catch his breath.

Ativan etc. (Lorazepam) is a benzodiazepine medication used to treat convulsive disorders such as epilepsy, and to relieve panic disorder and anxiety. As Lorazepam has sedating properties it is also used as a sleep aid. Benzodiazepines like Lorazepam act by enhancing the actions of a natural brain chemical, GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA is a neurotransmitter, a chemical that carries messages between brain nerve cells. GABA inhibits the transmission of nerve signals, thereby reducing nervous excitation.
