For this reason, the researchers suggest, doctors who treat insomnia should go beyond improving the quality or quantity of their patients' sleep and seek to reduce this hyperarousal , which is a risk factor for both psychiatric and medical illness.

Counting sheep no aid to insomnia
Counting sheep is too mundane to banish worries, researchers concluded LONDON, England Insomniacs are more likely to fall asleep by imagining a relaxing scene than by counting sheep, scientists have found. Researchers at Oxford University discovered that the traditional cure for sleeplessness, believed to date from the 19th century, does not work because it is just too boring to keep the mind off problems and concerns. In an experiment, 50 insomniacs were asked to try different techniques to see which helped them to fall asleep more quickly. One group imagined a relaxing, tranquil scene like a waterfall or a beach. The second tried counting sheep while a third were left to their own devices. VOX POP Views from the streets of London  QUICKVOTE How do you get to sleep?

CURE INSOMNIA
20 WAYS TO WAKE-UP ALERT, RESTED AND REFRESHED Thomas Yarnell, Ph.D. Clinical Psychologist
Marilyn tossed and turned as the hour hand moved silently to the next number. Two hours had gone by and she was no closer to falling asleep then she was when she first lay down. Marilyn is not alone. Twenty-five percent of all adults have one form of insomnia or another. You do not have to be one of them. Here are 20 things you can do to sleep well, wake rested, and be alert all day.
There are many causes of insomnia. Stress and depression are two causes that head the list. In Marilyn's case it was stress. When she laid down to go to sleep, her mind started racing. She was thinking about everything that she had to do the next day.
Insomnia generally comes in one of three varieties:
* Type 1 is where you have difficulty falling asleep when you go to bed. This is what Marilyn was experiencing.
* Type 2 is where you fall asleep easily but wake up to early.
* Type 3 is a blend. You may fall asleep easily or with difficulty and then wake up frequently during the night.
The end result is that you receive far less healthy sleep than your body requires. Being deprived of sleep interferes with your ability to think clearly, process information and find solutions for the problems that confront all of us on a daily basis.

What is insomnia? Insomnia means a person has difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep during the night, or wakes up tired in the morning. At least 10% of the adult population suffer from chronic insomnia and even more experience occasional sleep disturbances. Common causes of insomnia include stress, anxiety, depression, pain, and stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine. Poor sleep habits and irregular sleep schedules can also contribute. Sometimes, the fear of not sleeping and trying too hard to sleep is enough to create a vicious cycle that keeps someone awake. Insomnia is a serious problem . It causes daytime fatigue, impaired attention and concentration, reduced enjoyment of relationships, increased risk of depression, decreased productivity, unneeded suffering and significant use of costly health-care services. What psychological approaches work in treating primary insomnia?

  • "Insomnia" Christopher Nolan's creepy, big budget thriller his first film since "Memento" is the kind of film Hitchcock would make. By Andrew O'Hehir Has Christopher Nolan told you about his condition? He's unable to make movies unless they're about men suffering from strange neurological afflictions, men so plagued by guilt over what they may or may not have done that the entire world becomes a distorted reflection of their psychological distress, men searching for killers when what they really need to do is take a long, hard look in the mirror. Of course, Nolan is not the first young director of thrillers to exhibit obsessive-compulsive tendencies. The good news is that, based on the evidence of "Insomnia," his big-budget follow-up to the cult smash

There's a truly great Irish poet his name is Brendan Kennelly, and he has this epic poem called the Book of Judas, and there's a line in that poem that never leaves my mind, it says: "If you want to serve the age, betray it." What does that mean to betray the age?
Well to me betraying the age means exposing its conceits, it's foibles; it's phony moral certitudes. It means telling the secrets of the age and facing harsher truths.

"Love is like oxygen. Love lifts you up where you belong. All you need is love." If at any moment in your life, you've been blessed to experience such a rare and precious love, you will be enamored with Moulin Rouge.
At the turn of the century, the elite in-crowd gathers to socialize with the creatures of the seedy underworld and the Bohemian lifestyle at the legendary Parisian hot spot, the Moulin Rouge. Satine (Nicole Kidman) is known as the "Sparkling Diamond" for her dazzling beauty and immense talent as a courtesan. When Christian (Ewan McGregor), a young and talented writer, falls in love with her, she realizes he will be bad for business. A deal is made between the Moulin Rouge's owner, Harold Sidler (Jim Broadbent) and the Duke (Richard Roxburgh), to transform the club into a theater and put on a show, Spectacular Spectacular. In order to close the deal, Christian comes up with a bizarre story off the top of his head and the ensemble cast follows along with it. As the final piece, Satine must exclusively belong to the Duke, a slimy character with evil intentions.
While Sidler agrees, it is already too late as Satine has fallen in love with Christian. They are careful to hide their torrid love affair, but it becomes evident to everyone except the Duke who's as sharp as a sack of wet mice. Lushly directed by Baz Luhrmann, this post-modern twist on the musical uses extreme photography techniques, vibrant colors and costumes, and visionary dream sequences to tell the story through song. Academy awards were presented to Catherine Martin for both Costume Design and Art Direction.

What to do when you can't sleep
    By Carrie Angus, M.D.

It's 3 a.m. You're scheduled to give a big presentation at eleven, only eight hours away. You desperately need to sleep so you will be rested and alert when your big moment comes, but here you are staring wide eyed at the bedroom ceiling. Your mind is agitated and your body won't relax. The harder you work at getting to sleep, the wider awake you are. You've already tried counting sheep, watching the late show, and making yourself a snack-all to no avail. In desperation you reach for a sleeping pill.
This is a common scenario in the United States, where approximately one third of all adults suffer from some type of sleep disorder. Insomnia, the most common type by far, is clinically defined as the inability to fall asleep after lying in bed for thirty minutes or the inability to sustain sleep for more than a few hours without waking. Practically speaking, however, insomnia can be defined as unrestful sleep.
We've all experienced some form of insomnia at particularly stressful times in our lives. It's normal to have trouble sleeping at these times, and it usually passes after a night or two. Insomnia is a problem only when it becomes chronic. Although it is associated with certain physical illnesses-arthritis, heart failure, and chronic lung disease, for example-most experts agree that insomnia is a symptom, not an illness in itself. So what is it a symptom of? There are two answers-the ancient and the modern. At first glance they seem completely different, but a closer look reveals some remarkable similarities.

    Overcoming insomnia in later years
December 22, 1999 Web posted at: 2:34 PM EST (1934 GMT) In this story: A symptom with a cause Learned by experience Other approaches RELATEDS By Larry Schuster (WebMD) Sleep: that treasured time of rest and relaxation. For many, it's as easy as turning off the light and pulling up the covers. But for some including many older people sleep is a challenge. Insomnia affects up to one-half of healthy seniors, according to the Emory University Sleep Disorder Center in Atlanta. It's even more likely in older adults, who may have medical or psychiatric illnesses that interfere with sleep. But as sleep research progresses, insomnia among the elderly is becoming less of a mystery. Some new studies, for instance, suggest that altered sleep patterns are just a natural progression of aging.
