Insomnia
This is Christopher Nolan's second widely known directorial accomplishment-he actually made three movies and his very first one was more of a personal test of potentiality, as probably is the case with every director. Memento was a masterpiece, having a unique way of storytelling. When I first heard about Insomnia, I thought it might be similar in the making. It wasn't the case. Not entirely. Detective Will Dormer (Al Pacino) and his partner are sent to a far, cold town in the state of Alaska to investigate the murder of a local teen. While on the hunt for the murderer, he accidentally shoots his friend dead. Instead of confessing, the-spur-of-the-moment situation pushes him toward a different path; blame the killer for the cop's death. Between the risk of being caught and the messy and insomniac week, the detective battles his own demons arising from his emotional complexity and guilt. Toward the end we learn of a torment he was carrying all this time, which is the likely cause of his desensitized decision-making. This movie made me sleepy. Not because it was boring or anything, but because Al Pacino played the role of the insomniac guy, who cannot friggin' sleep for a whole week, very well. By the end of the movie, he was weak. He had black bags hanging under his eyes and he could not walk or see right. He barely functioned. Why? It is his subconscious being a bitch after he hid the truth from his partners. Not to mention the long and exhausting flight. Good job, though.

    by Brenda O'Hanlon
No one knows how much sleep you really need. It varies from person to person. The amount you need to be at your best is as individual as the amount of food you need. How many hours you log is irrelevant. What's right for you is whatever makes you feel good, productive or creative next day. Anything between six and ten hours is normal for adults, but lots of people manage on less. Einstein needed ten. Napoleon, Freud and Churchill all got by on just a few hours. Bill Clinton averages five or six. Jay Leno and Maggie Thatcher are around the four/five mark. Most adolescents need nine. At any given time, about one in every three people is suffering from insomnia. In the Western World it's responsible for skyrocketing sales of various prescriptions remedies in general and sleeping pills in particular. In the UK in 1992, (the last year for which figures are available) doctors wrote 12 million prescriptions for sleeping pills. Americans spend $2.4 billion a year on prescription remedies while sales of melatonin and other non-prescription remedies top hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

  • jet lag those who work day and night shifts drinking coffee late at night
I suffered from insomnia during my exams at school and at university. A combination of coffee, anxiety, and stress ensured that I woke up the next morning feeling as bad as the night before. These are situations which a lot of us can relate to. For some, the problem may disappear after a few days (transient insomnia), but for others, this can continue for many weeks, months, and even years (chronic insomnia).

Director: Christopher Nolan
Writers: Hillary Seitz (based on a screenplay by Nikolaj Frobenius and Erik Skjoldbjaerg)
Cast: Al Pacino, Robin Williams, Hilary Swank, Martin Donovan, Maura Tierney, Jonathan Jackson. Review by Rob Vaux So much for poor follow-throughs. After creating a modern masterpiece in last year's Memento , director Christopher Nolan hits a second home run with Insomnia , another psychological thriller that delves deep into guilt and memory. It eschews Memento 's formalistic time-swapping for a more conventional narrative thread a six-day murder investigation told relatively straight yet the results are eerily similar. Nolan has a knack for crawling inside his protagonists' heads, but rather than trying to top Memento 's mind game, he strikes out in a completely new direction... with equally impressive results. The fulcrum is a brutal slaying committed at the top of the world Nightmute, Alaska, where the sun never sets in the summer months. Insomnia does for sunshine what most noir His condition is uncomfortably similar to that of the killer he hunts: Walter Finch (Robin Williams, in an impressively restrained performance), a mystery writer who knows enough about police work to hide his tracks. Finch appears quietly, almost incidentally, and well after Dormer has begun his downward spiral. Contrary to assumption, Finch isn't psychotic; in his mind, he simply made a bad mistake, and he believes that Dormer is no different. Without revealing too much, Dormer's investigation soon hinges on practiced deceit hiding accidental incidents that would cook his goose with Internal Affairs. Only Finch knows the truth... and capturing him means uncovering Dormer's guilt as well.

INSOMNIA ***1/2 (R)
May 24, 2002 Will Dormer: Al Pacino
Walter Finch: Robin Williams
Ellie Burr: Hilary Swank
Hap Eckhart: Martin Donovan
Rachel Clement: Maura Tierney
Randy Stetz: Jonathan Jackson
Warner Bros. presents a film directed by Christopher Nolan. Written by Hillary Seitz, based on a screenplay by Nikolaj Frobenius and Erik Skjoldbjaerg. Running time: 118 minutes. Rated R (for language, some violence and brief nudity). BY ROGER EBERT He looks exhausted when he gets off the plane. Troubles are preying on him. An investigation by internal affairs in Los Angeles may end his police career. And now here he is inwhere the hell is this?Nightmute, Alaska, land of the midnight sun, investigating a brutal murder. The fuels driving Detective Will Dormer are fear and exhaustion. They get worse. Al Pacino plays the veteran cop, looking like a man who has lost all hope. His partner Hap Eckhart (Martin Donovan) is younger, more resilient and may be prepared to tell the internal affairs investigators what they want to knowinformation that would bring the older man down. They have been sent up north to help with a local investigation, flying into Nightmute in a two-engine prop plane that skims low over jagged ice ridges. They'll be assisting a local cop named Ellie Burr (Hilary Swank), who is still fresh with the newness of her job. "Insomnia," the first film directed by Christopher Nolan since his famous "Memento" (2001), is a remake of a Norwegian film of the same name, made in 1998 by Erik Skjoldbjaerg. That was a strong, atmospheric, dread-heavy film, and so is this one. Unlike most remakes, the Nolan "Insomnia" is not a pale retread, but a re-examination of the material, like a new production of a good play. Stellan Skarsgard, who starred in the earlier film, took an existential approach to the character; he seemed weighed down by the moral morass he was trapped in. Pacino takes a more physical approach: How much longer can he carry this burden?

Al Pacino stars in the psychological thriller "Insomnia," a remake of a much-admired 1997 Norwegian-language film. The English-language update is tautly directed by Christopher Nolan ("Memento"), and in addition to Pacino's outstanding performance in the leading role, there are strong supporting performances by Hilary Swank and Robin Williams. The "Insomnia" DVD comes with a generous selection of bonus materials. As the movie opens, a small plane delivers two veteran Los Angeles police detectives to the remote town of Nightmute, Alaska. The LAPD detectives are Will Dormer (Pacino) and his partner, who have come to help solve a brutal murder. They are met by an eager young local policewoman named Ellie Burr (Swank), and she takes them to the Nightmute police station. But we soon learn that Dormer and his partner are under investigation back in L.A. by Internal Affairs.
