You are in: Insomnia Overview Most adults have experienced insomnia or sleeplessness at one time or another in their lives. An estimated 30-50% of the general population is affected by insomnia, and 10% have chronic insomnia. Insomnia is a symptom, not a stand-alone diagnosis. By definition, insomnia is "difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, or both." Although most of us know what insomnia is and how we feel and perform after one or more sleepless nights, few seek medical advice. Many people remain unaware of the behavioral and medical options available to treat insomnia. Insomnia affects all age groups. Among older adults, insomnia affects women more often than men. The incidence increases with age.

Mentire è facile come uccidere, come inventare prove, creare indizi.

Jennifer Lopez is great to watch, even with short hair. It's a good thriller, but we've never been big fans of men being depicted as the bad guys.

What is Insomnia?
The term " insomnia " encompasses a wide variety of sleep complaints usually involving insufficient quality or duration of sleep. Typically, insomniacs report 2 or more of the following symptoms:
  • problems with falling asleep at bedtime (which we call onset insomnia), or waking at in the middle of the night and having difficulty falling back asleep (which we call maintenance insomnia), or having a final arise time that's too early in the morning (which we call early morning awakening), or excessively light sleep or restless sleep during the night, or daytime fatigue, which can get in the way of memory, concentration, and work efficiency and which can cause restlessness, irritability, anxiety, or a sense of helplessness during the day.
Onset and maintenance insomnia are often associated with anxiety, and maintenance insomnia and early morning awakening are often associated with depression.

InnerSelf Magazine (enter your email here) Sample Issue Discovering Nutritional Therapy by Patricia Quinn Nutritional therapy is a system of healing based on the belief that food, as nature intended, provides the medicine we need to obtain and maintain a state of health: our food is our medicine and our medicine is our food. Although some health problems require specific medication, many conditions can be relieved effectively with nutritional therapy. These include disorders ranging from chronic fatigue, energy loss, insomnia and depression, to backache, skin complaints, asthma, and headaches. Nutritional therapy will also benefit you if you have no specific illness, but want to maintain a state of optimum health. It is safe for babies and children as well as adults, and the change of eating patterns that is typically prescribed usually has far fewer side effects than synthetic medicines.

Counting sheep no aid to insomnia
Counting sheep is too mundane to banish worries, researchers concluded LONDON, England Insomniacs are more likely to fall asleep by imagining a relaxing scene than by counting sheep, scientists have found. Researchers at Oxford University discovered that the traditional cure for sleeplessness, believed to date from the 19th century, does not work because it is just too boring to keep the mind off problems and concerns. In an experiment, 50 insomniacs were asked to try different techniques to see which helped them to fall asleep more quickly. One group imagined a relaxing, tranquil scene like a waterfall or a beach. The second tried counting sheep while a third were left to their own devices. VOX POP Views from the streets of London  QUICKVOTE How do you get to sleep?

Insomnia comes in many different flavors.
Difficulty falling asleep
No problem falling asleep but difficulty staying asleep (many awakenings)
Waking up too early
How much sleep does a person need?
Enough to feel alert during the day. Typically 7 to 9 hours (varies from person to person) of good quality sleep.
Three basic types of Insomnia
Transient insomnia - lasting for a few nights
Short-term insomnia - two or four weeks of poor sleep
Chronic insomnia - poor sleep that happens most nights and last a month or longer Transient and short-term insomnia generally occur in people who are temporarily experiencing one or more of the following:
stress
environmental noise
extreme temperatures change in the surrounding environment sleep/wake schedule problems such as those due to jet lag medication side effects Chronic insomnia is more complex and often results from a combination of factors, including underlying physical or mental disorders. One of the most common causes of chronic insomnia is depression. Other underlying causes include arthritis, kidney disease, heart failure, asthma, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, Parkinson's disease, and hyperthyroidism. However, chronic insomnia may also be due to behavioral factors, including the misuse of caffeine, alcohol, or other substances; disrupted sleep/wake cycles as may occur with shift work or other nighttime activity schedules; and chronic stress.
