Inflammatory Bowel Disease Centre (IBDC)
at Mount Sinai Hospital
The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Centre at Mount Sinai Hospital is an interdisciplinary programme dedicated to the provision of expert care for patients and families coping with Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis. The Centre provides both ambulatory care and in-patient services (on a uniquely combined medical and surgical IBD unit), with the support of a dynamic team of health care professionals, including gastroenterologists, surgeons, psychiatrists, pharmacists, nutritionists, enterostomal therapy nurses and social workers. The Centre extends its support to the community at large, with outreach programmes for both health care professionals and patients. Programmes include annual IBD Update nights for patients and families, newsletters for the Pelvic Pouch Group, and evening support group meetings for those with Crohn's and for those undergoing Pelvic Pouch surgery. In addition, IBD conferences for health care professionals are offered, and courses for nursing through

Measles, mumps, rubella vaccine, inflammatory bowel disease and autism
Recent media reports have suggested a link between the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine, bowel inflammation and autism. No reliable evidence supports a link. This fact sheet provides background information for health professionals and parents. What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)? IBD is a group of chronic inflammatory disorders of the small and large bowel, the commonest being ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. The cause of IBD is not understood, but an immune mechanism as well as a genetic predisposition are likely. IBD is relatively rare, and usually occurs in people aged between 15 to 30 years, but can also occur in children. Common symptoms include diarrhoea, fever, stomach pain and weight loss. What is autism? Autism is a developmental disorder that is usually identified between 18 months and three years of age. Autism is four times more common in boys than girls and occurs in all racial and social groups. Children and adults with autism typically have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities. A single cause of autism has not been identified, but current research links it to developmental, genetic and environmental factors. Many children have some of the features of autism but do not fulfil all the diagnostic criteria. Because of this, terms such as "Pervasive Developmental Disorder" (PDD) and Autism Spectrum disorder are sometimes used.

What is inflammatory bowel disease?
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is not a specific disease. Rather, it is a specific reaction that the stomach or intestines have to chronic irritation.
What are the clinical signs of IBD?
If the stomach is involved, your cat will have chronic vomiting . This is the most common form. If the intestines are involved, chronic

Inflammatory Bowel Disease in the Cat The symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease or IBD are chronic vomitting, diarrhea, annorexia, weight loss, Normal or increased appetite, belching,Black, tarry stools, gas, bad breath, increased thirst and/or stomach pain. I have read repeatedly that a raw diet has helped many cats with IBD. I wonder.(There are many sites on the web which teach you how to prepare raw food in the safest way possible since food bourne illnesses affect our four legged beloved companions also.) Food preservatives and color enhancers are sources of allergens for some cats. IBD can be precipitated by food allergies, also by such things as bacteria and parasites which can be treated with antibiotics and anthelmintics. Lamb is probably the most neutral meat for your kitty cat to eat. The following contains research and websites that provide a wealth of information. Mention is made in a few articles of new steroid, budesonide more potent and with fewer side effects. It is also used for humans with Crohn's Disease, the equivalent to inflammatory bowel disease in felines. There is a new drug for Crohn's Disease Remicade out but I haven't found any references to research for cats with inflammatory bowel disease.

Signs and Symptoms Inflammatory bowel disease is a term that includes many chronic diseases. These diseases interfere with the normal function of the intestine, cause small and large bowel (intestine) inflammation and, in some cases, ulcers, which are open sores of the mucous membrane. Symptoms vary widely from child to child. Inflammatory bowel disease can affect people of all ages and is more commonly found in those who have other family members with the disease. The cause of this disease is not understood. The two most common types of inflammatory bowel disease are ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Ulcerative colitis causes swelling, inflammation and ulceration of the lining of the large bowel. The small bowel usually remains healthy.

Spondylitis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD SpA)

Spondylitis of inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic form of spinal arthritis that also involves inflammation of the intestinal wall. Approximately one in five people with inflammatory bowel disease (especially Crohn's disease) will have arthritis in one of the extremities. Symptoms can come and go, however, in contrast to the spinal arthritis, the severity of arthritis in these joints mimics that of the bowel disease. Hence, when the abdominal pain is flaring, this arthritis tends to flare as well. Although this condition includes many aspects, much can be done to help both types of symptoms.

Symptoms
Nearly one in six patients with inflammatory bowel disease also has spinal inflammation, although the intensity of spinal inflammation is independent of the severity of the bowel disease. In many, this may just be arthritis in the sacroiliac joints, but in about five percent of cases the entire spine can be involved. Read More...
