Medical Editor: Leslie J. Schoenfield, M.D., Ph.D. What are the intestinal complications of IBD?
Ulcerative colitis
(UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) are known as the inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The precise cause of IBD remains unknown. These diseases are believed to be caused by a combination of genetic and non-genetic, or environmental factors (for example, infections) that interact with the body's immune (defense) system. When the intestinal immune system does not function properly, many white blood cells accumulate in the inner lining (mucosa) of the gut. The white cells then release chemicals that lead to tissue injury (inflammation). This inflammation of the mucosa can cause diarrhea , which is the most common symptom of UC and CD, with or without the intestinal complications.

    A Review of
Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet
    by Elaine Gottschall
This newsletter pulls together much of the material I have written about Gottschall's groundbreaking work on the effect of complex carbohydrates on the intestines. I provide urls and their listserve at the end of the article for those of you who wish more information and communication with others on the diet. I know I have carbohydrate indigestion and mine is a result of early and unattended constipation. One of the effects of constipation or the stagnation of material in the intestines is bacterial and fungal overgrowth which can lead to inflammation. I feel great when I follow the diet. If you or anyone you know has any of the symptoms or conditions, the book will be very valuable reading.

Canine Inflammatory Bowel Disease Check back for updates Cody I decided to create this page when my (then 2 year old )Aussie was diagnosed with Inflamatory Bowel Disease. I searched the internet and I found plenty about IBD in people but found almost nothing about Canine IBD. IMPORTANT:I am not any type of animal health professional. This page is to supply information and support to people with IBD inflicted pets. If you suspect your pet has IBD or any other health problem check with a veterinarian. I can not guarantee the accuracy of any of my information. What I have learned so far: There are 5 forms of IBD; lymphocytic-plasmacytic(most common), eosinophilic(relatively uncommon), neutrophilic, granulomatous, histiocytic. These classifications come from the type of cell that is causing the inflamation. The following is what I have learned about lymphocytic-plasmacytic IBD, which is the type that my Cody has. Diagnosis can be difficult because the symptoms can mimic other diseases. Positive diagnosis usually occurs after an endoscopic exam with biopsy. Symptoms can include: chronic diarrhea, vomiting, bloody stools, abdominal pain, weight loss. Your dog may have one or several of

    About inflammatory bowel disease
    What is it?
Arthritis means inflammation of joints . Inflammation is a body process that can result in pain, swelling, warmth, redness, and stiffness. Sometimes inflammation can also affect the bowel. When it does, that process is called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD is actually two separate diseases: Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
    Prognosis
With proper treatment, most people who have these diseases can lead full, active lives. Usually the inflammation of joints in IBD lasts only a short time and does not cause permanent deformity. With the bowel symptoms under control through medication and diet, the outlook for the joints is excellent.
    Causes
The cause of inflammatory bowel disease is not known. Research suggests that the immune system, the body's natural defense against foreign invaders, is somehow altered in people with these conditions. Researchers believe that the chronic (long-lasting) inflammation present in the intestines of persons with both forms of IBD damages the bowel. This may permit bacteria to enter the damaged bowel wall and circulate through the bloodstream. The body's reaction to this bacteria may then cause problems in other areas of the body. The most common is inflammation of the joints. Other problems include skin sores, inflammation of the eyes, and certain types of liver disease.

Two major types of IBD are described: ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn disease (CD). As the name suggests, UC is limited to the colon (large intestine). Although CD can involve any part of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus, it most commonly affects the small intestine and/or the colon.

DEFINITION The two main categories of inflammatory bowel disease are ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Ulcerative colitis is characterized by recurring episodes of inflammation of the mucosal layer of the large bowel not related to an intestinal infection. The inflammation involves the rectum and may extend proximally in a continuous fashion. Ulcerative proctosigmoiditis refers to inflammation extending into the sigmoid colon. Left-sided colitis refers to inflammation extending up to, but not beyond, the splenic flexure.
