Erectile Function
While there may, as urologists often say, be no definitive answers for erectile function and that getting it up is about 90% emotional, with stress being a major negative factor. Even if true, we consistantly find that erectile function and a healthy prostate go together. Most prescription and all recreational drugs limit erectile function, more so as we age. When there is reduced circulation in the body, erectile function is among the first to be effected. Going through the cleansing program helps to keep the blood vessels in the penis "clean" and the blood flowing. If additional help is needed, chelation therapy (which acts as a "roto-rooter" to strip the walls of blood vessels) often dramatically improves erectile function. Regular aerobic exercise helps also, by improving blood circulation and increasing testosterone, for stronger bones, better libido, happier outlook and better erectile function. Erectile fumction is a good marker for a healthy prostate, so it is worth your committment to the program and to hormone balancing. The Prostate90 Fondation provides excellent coaching on improving erectile function. Email to coaching@prostate90fndn.org or call (310)587-9855, for an appointment..

Week 56 - (Temporary) Impotence
This week's question was sent in by Patty , who originally founded the Sexy Saturday Meme. Thank you, Patty! What's the best way to deal with (hopefully temporary) male floppiness? How do you react to (temporary) impotence, how do you deal with it? Have you ever had any particular experience with (temporary) impotence? What did you do to solve the problem? If you've never come across the problem and your partner revealed that kind of problem to you, would you quit the relationship, or how long would you try to help your partner until you give up? Has anyone ever left you for that kind of (temporary) problem? Vacuity Comment
Comments Best way to deal? Hopefully both parties can laugh it off - it's really not all that uncommon.... best way to fix it? Oral sex, in my opinion :) Crystal @ April 17, 2004 06:05 AM
I once had the problem of (very temporary) impotence whenever I put a damn condom on. My GF at that time fortunatly was very cool about it and after a little while she helped me get a condom on - and since I could continue looking at her, touching her and all that stuff the problem was solved. After a few packages of condoms I got used to them (again) and could even put them on myself again.
So, in my opinion the best you can do is staying cool and just don't worry about it. There are so many other ways to enjoy each other, just enjoy them and eventually the impotence will just vanish.

Impotence and Smoking
Impotence, or erectile dysfunction, is twice as likely to occur in smokers than non-smokers. Exposure to second-hand smoke is a significant factor in becoming impotent. What is Impotence?
  • Impotence is the constant inability of a man to maintain an erection for sexual purposes. It is estimated that impotence affects over 30 million men in the United States.
Facts
  • Sexual functioning requires the coordination of several functions in the body. This includes the nervous system (mental stimulation) working in coordination with hormones, and the vascular system which pumps blood into the muscle tissue that maintains the erection. Smoking can affect all these systems, thereby, causing impotence Many diseases caused by smoking involve blockage of the arteries, meaning that smoking inhibits the flow of blood throughout the body. Strokes and heart attacks are one result of severe blood flow blockage. Impotence is another result of arterial blockage. Long-term smoking causes more physiological damage. In a United States study

Successful treatment for impotence
Summary: The causes of impotence and how to find the best treatment.
Text: Jana had always thought her marriage was happy. But lately she'd noticed that her husband Luis* had lost interest in making love. Maybe he didn't find her attractive any more now she was older, she wondered. Maybe he was seeing another woman.
But something else was stopping Luis from making love - the fear that he might be impotent. The last time they'd made love he'd had trouble getting an erection. What if it happened again? Like many men, he found his problem difficult to talk about, even to his wife.
But it's common for men of any age to have this problem sometimes. Fatigue, stress or too much alcohol can all cause erection difficulties - just because it happens once doesn't mean it will continue. Although there are many physical rea-sons for erection problems, feelings also play a part. For some men, simply being worried about impotence can affect their erection.
But whether the problem is physical, mental or both, it's usually treatable. The im-portant thing is for men not to feel shy about talking to their partners or getting professional help - after all, it's a common problem affecting more than a million men in Australia.

LEARN MORE
by Chris Steidle, MD The concept of the penile prosthesis dates back to early times when it was noticed that several species of animals had what was termed an os penis or biaculum. This is a cartilaginous support to keep the penis erect. The first penile prosthesis was actually a rib graft implanted into the corporal body. The recent history of penile prosthesis dates back to 1950, when Dr. Scardino implanted the first synthetic material into the penis. Penile implants improved dramatically with subsequent work of many investigators, and penile implant surgery has progressed to a very high level. The indications for penile implant surgery include vascular disease, diabetes, bladder or prostate cancer surgery or for benign prostate disease, Peyronie's disease, neurologic disease, hypogonadism, pelvic fractures and impotence related to many medical diseases including chronic renal disease, alcoholism, multiple sclerosis, genital trauma, Parkinsonism, and drug therapy.

What is erectile dysfunction?
When a man can't get an erection to have sex or can't keep an erection long enough to finish having sex, it's called erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is also called impotence. Return to top
Is erectile dysfunction just a part of old age?
Physical causes of erectile dysfunction
  • Alcoholism
  • Fatigue
  • Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
  • Diabetes
  • Brain or spinal-cord injuries
  • Hypogonadism (which leads to lower testosterone levels)
  • Liver or kidney failure
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Radiation therapy to the testicles
  • Stroke
  • Some types of prostate or bladder surgery
Erectile dysfunction doesn't have to be a part of getting older. It's true that as you get older, you may need more stimulation (such as stroking and touching) to get an erection. You might also need more time between erections. But older men should still be able to get an erection and enjoy sex. Return to top

HEALTH WATCH
Impotence: "Not tonight honey, I'm deflated" Spring 94 By Michael Oosterhoff Impotence, one of the most feared words for men, is the inability to have, or maintain, an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. Impotence is classified as either primary (never able to have intercourse, or secondary (had intercourse before dysfunction). Secondary dysfunction is the most common and can occur at any age and results from different causes. This is distinct from isolated episodes of not having or losing an erection which is a universal experience for men, and does not indicate erectile dysfunction. The causes can be a combination of physical and psychological factors. For example, impotence may be caused by a medical condition, such as diabetes, genital infection or physical stress such as flu, fatigue, alcohol. It can also reflect psychological issues such as performance fears, poor communication, adjusting to a new partner, or other kinds of emotional distress. Each of these can reduce sexual arousal and cause the loss of an erection. Performance fears can become self-fulfilling. Impotence can develop into a cycle where feelings of frustration, blame and lowered self esteem occur. These can result in the avoidance of sex or attempts to work harder to overcome the problem. These distract from intimacy and fun and can heighten tension in the relationship and ultimately exacerbate the problem.

Defining Male and Female Sexual Problems
Sexual dysfunction is a quality-of-life issue for men and women. Men may have libido (sex drive), ejaculatory or erectile difficulties. Perhaps half of the male population over the age of 50 are affected. Women may suffer from difficulties with libido, sexual arousal, orgasmic function or vaginal lubrication. A recent survey in JAMA stated that "over 40% of women may be affected". Testosterone deficiency may be present in both men and women.
Our Approach
Because sexual problems do not occur as a single entity, but are associated with multiple factors, we have established a multi-disciplinary approach to evaluate the total person or couple. We evaluate medical, hormonal, psychological and surgical aspects of the complaints. Click here to view the

The battle of impotence drugs
Viagra rejuvenated the sex lives of millions of people. But there's one big gripe about it: Men and women don't like having to schedule sex within the pill's four-hour window of effectiveness. "It takes planning. It really takes out the spontaneity," said Dr. Fred Govier, a urologist at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle. Many men who've taken Viagra are perfectly happy with the impotence medication. But the blue pill's limitations may have created a multibillion-dollar opportunity for a competing yellow pill and its creator, Bothell-based Icos. Icos believes its product, Cialis, has that potential because it lasts up to 36 hours, works slightly faster than Viagra and has similar side effects. The drug, already on sale in dozens of countries, is expected to win U.S. approval soon.
