Exercise to Help Hypothyroid Patients Get Fit and Lose Weight

by Mary Shomon

(Note: As always, talk to your healthcare provider before embarking on a new exercise program).
If you're a thyroid patient who is trying to lose weight, eventually you are going to discover one of the most important issues of all the absolute need for exercise. For most people with a thyroid condition, the combination of a slowed metabolism, a higher susceptbility to simple carbohydrates (like sugar, white flour, and white rice products), and increased insulin resistance, make weight loss difficult. Sometimes it seems nearly impossible.
But as someone who is hypothyroid, and who is still facing my own weight loss challenge, the one thing I can tell you that is absolutely essential is exercise. You may say that you don't have time, or energy to exercise, or you can't afford to join a gym. No more excuses!!
You need about 40 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week, and you don't need any special equipment, except for a pair of walking shoes or sneakers, and a watch or stopwatch.

Dr. Ian Sandler If your pet has a problem with excessive shedding or seems too tired to play catch, it may be a sign of a thyroid problem. Dr. Ian explains what causes this disease and how it is treated.
Hypothyroidism usually caused by one of two diseases: lymphocytic thyroiditis or idiopathic thyroid gland atrophy. The first disease is the most common cause of hypothyroidism and is thought to be an immune-mediated disease. This means that the immune system decides that the thyroid is abnormal or foreign and attacks it. It is not known why the immune system does this.
Hypothyroidism is treatable but not curable. It is treated with oral administration of a thyroid replacement hormone. This drug must be given for the rest of the dog's life.
Signs of hypothyroid problems in your pet:
  • Weight gain
    Lethargy
    Cold intolerance
    Dry coat with excessive shedding

"Cats are not people. It's important to stress that, because excessive cat watching often leads to the delusion that cats are people." ~ Dan Greenburg
Hypothyroidism
The thyroid gland consists of two lobes located near the larynx (Adam's apple) in the cat's neck along side the windpipe. The thyroid gland combines the amino acid tyrosine and iodine to manufacture the thyroid hormone. The pituitary gland exerts control over the thyroid gland. TSH from the pituitary stimulates the thyroid gland to produce its hormone, thyroxine. Thyroxine is the hormone that controls metabolic and activity levels. The thyroid gland also secretes another hormone, calcitonin, which is necessary for proper calcium metalbolism.
In layman terms, the above paragraph simply means the thyroid gland controls the cat's metabolism. The thyroid gland produces the thyroid hormones that are critical to maintaining the cat’s normal metabolic rate. This is the speed at which the body converts nutrient energy into energy fueling the body. If the thyroid gland degenerates or becomes inflamed, it can no longer produce sufficient quantities of hormones. As a result, cells don’t convert the nutritional energy it needs into biologically usable fuel as fast as usual.

Coping with Autoimmune
Hypothyroid Disease
By Jan Depression is part of autoimmune hypothyroid disease. In this condition, the body incorrectly turns the thyroid gland off before the thyroid can work fully. It is a self-allergy, perpetuated by a body whose immune system is working "better" than it should, overtime. In a healthy person, the thyroidlocated in the neckhelps keep the body running up to speed. This disease turns off the thyroid and causes all the body's internal organs to slow down. The slowness and cold are easily felt as depression. The slow sensation can be coupled with panic overtones, due to the body's attempt to keep moving by raising adrenaline levels. The depression, when combined with normally unhappy events, such as the end of a relationship or loss of a job, can become dangerously serious. Even people with normal-sized thyroids, showing normal thyroid blood levels, can have the disease; especially those people showing as "low normal." The medical term for this is "subclinical" disease.

  • You don't have to get through bad times by yourself. Set up routine counseling sessions, at least every three to four months, so that your therapist will know you in both good times and bad. Friends and family are also good sources of support. Go to them if you are having trouble hanging on; it's just not possible to hang on by yourself. If you are traveling and don't know anyone, hang out for awhile in a mall or another place where there are other people. Seek out community support systems, such as local mental health center groups and faith organizations. Use skin moisturizers for dry skin, and brush your hair gently to lessen loss and avoid tying it back tightly. Knowledge is power. Learn all you can by searching online resources such as Medline. Keep up with new studies. Print them off for your doctor. Get some control over what is happening to you by becoming informed.

    HYPOTHYROIDISM (Underactive Thyroid; Goiter)
Fatigue and inability to tolerate cold are the most common symptoms. Others include: loss of appetite, a slow heart rate, muscle weakness and possible cramps, dry and scaly skin, recurrent infections, water retention (edema) and overweight, brittle nails, constipation, depression, difficulty in concentrating, a yellow-orange coloration of the skin (especially on the palms of the hands). In women, there might be painful menstruation, a milky breast discharge, and fertility problems. The hormone, thyroxine, is almost pure iodine. First thing in the morning, place a thermometer under your arm for 15 minutes while keeping still. A temperature of 97.6 o F. or lower may indicate an underactive thyroid. Write down the result for five days. (Others say that if the test is consistently below 98, you are low thyroid.) A low thyroid condition generally does not produce goiter (which see). If you had goiter, your thyroid gland would enlarge. It is thought that Hashimoto's disease is the most common cause of an underactive thyroid. This occurs when the body becomes allergic to its own thyroxine! It is not clear why this happens.

    • "I have just had a thyroid function test, and my doctor tells me that my levels are normal, and yet I still feel rotten."

"My doctor tells me that I am running the risk of developing osteoporosis in later life because my TSH is below normal." When I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism my TSH was not that high and, except for a blip when my thyroxine dose was cut, has consistently been below the reference range. Too often have I heard that my TSH was too low and that I was running the risk of developing osteoporosis, but fortunately my endocrinologist told me that this low TSH was okay. Yes, it is well established that people who have ever suffered from the elevated levels of free T
