(Plus Thyroid Medications!) HYPOTHYROIDISM IN THE DOG Hypothyroidism in the dog , where the thyroid gland is not secreting normal amounts of thyroid hormone, is the most common endocrine gland disorder in the dog. The endocrine glands are listed below... Thyroid Gland (the Master Gland) Hypothalamus Pancreas Thymus Anterior Pituitary Pineal Gland Testis Ovary Parathyroid Glands Posterior Pituitary Adrenal Glands All of these tissues secrete chemical substances called hormones that have a profound effect on certain "target" tissues. But of all those glands and hormones, the thyroid gland is considered the Master Gland. If the thyroid gland is malfunctioning, every cell in the body is affected. No wonder dogs, properly diagnosed with hypothyroidism and placed on appropriate thyroid hormone supplements, will look, act and feel so much better than before treatment. SIGNS
Most dogs show signs of hypothyroidism between 3 and 5 years of age but diagnosis isn't made in some dogs until they are years older. Males and females seem to be equally affected. Routine testing of young dogs is

Hypothyroid Graves' Disease EMIL LESHO, DO, and ROBERT E. JONES, MD, Tacoma, Wash Abstract Background. Spontaneous conversion from hypothyroidism to hyperthyroidism has generally been considered uncommon. Methods. Values obtained were serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroxine, free thyroxine index, radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU), thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins (TSI), and thyrotropin-binding inhibitory immunoglobulin (TBII). Results. Five patients spontaneously had a minimum of two cycles in thyroid function with extremes of hypothyroxinemia to hyperthyroxinemia. One patient had four documented cyclic shifts in thyroid status. When measurements were obtained in the hyperthyroid phase, all patients had TSI, increased RAIU, and an undetectable TSH. When measurements were done in the hypothyroid phase, all patients had positive TBII but negative TSI. Conclusions. Spontaneous reversal of thyroid function may be more common than previously thought. Clinical features associated with lability of thyroid function were abrupt change in goiter size, exaggerated response to therapy, or the presence of TSH-receptor antibodies. Over the period of observation, which lasted from 6 months to several years, the five patients in our series spontaneously had at least two cycles in thyroid function, with extremes of hypothyroxinemia to hyperthyroxinemia. One patient had four documented cyclic shifts in thyroid status. When tested in the hyperthyroid phase, all patients were found to have TSI, increased radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU), and an undetectable TSH. When tested in the hypothyroid phase, all had thyrotropin-binding inhibitory immunoglobulins (TBII) but no TSI.

I'm 28 weeks pregnant and have started having regular contractions for 5 days and my dr. just put me on bed rest. I'm not dilated or effaced at all and this is my second pregnancy. My first was full term with no complications. Is there a connection between being hypothyroid and having preterm labor? My aunt was hypothyroid and delivered her daughter early and was on bedrest from about 30 weeks, but her dr's weren't sure if it was due to hypothyroid. I'm just concerned and if anyone can help me I would appreciate it. Thanks,

Back to Top General Hypothyroidism Information
Hypothyroidism is a condition that occurs when the thyroid gland produces insufficient amounts of thyroid hormones in the body. The thyroid gland serves as the body’s internal thermostat by secreting two hormones that control the rate at which the body burns calories and expends energy. If the gland does not secrete enough of the hormone, hypothyroidism is the result. Hyperthyroidism is caused by overproduction of these hormones. Hypothyroidism affects approximately 13 million Americans, most of whom are women between the ages of 30 and 50. An estimated one in eight women may develop a thyroid condition at some time in their lives.

Hypothyroid with Bipolar Disorder
Q. I have been diagnosed with hypothyroid as well as mild bipolar disorder. Since my thyroid levels are still out of balance, could the bipolar be a result of the hypothroid? A. It's possible, but by no means certain, that low thyroid function itself could cause a bipolar-like mood disorder. The research literature has not really provided final answers on this question. More likely, low thyroid function (hypothyroidism) would be an aggravating factor in a patient who already had true bipolar disorder, especially of the rapidly-cycling type (more than 4 mood swings per year). If you have a strong family history of bipolar disorder, this makes it even more likely that you would eventually have developed bipolar symptoms, even with normal thyroid function. It's probably also likely that until your thyroid function is back to normal, medications for bipolar disorder are not going to be entirely effective. Depression tends to be especially persistent, in my experience, when even mild hypothyroidism is allowed to continue. Also-one medication for bipolar disorder, lithium, can actually cause or worsen hypothyroidism.
