Hypopituitarism
What is hypopituitarism?
Hypopituitarism, also called an underactive pituitary gland, is a condition that affects the anterior (front) lobe of the pituitary gland - usually resulting in a partial or complete loss of functioning of that lobe. The resulting symptoms depend on which hormones are no longer being produced by the gland. Because the pituitary gland affects the other endocrine organs, effects of hypopituitarism may be gradual, or sudden and dramatic.

  • Intrasellar tumours
    Extralsellar tumours
    Infiltration/Inflammation
    Carotid artery aneurysm

Each of the main causes will be considered individually. Intrasellar tumours Any tumour inside the pituitary is capable of causing hypopituitarism. The most common tumours to be found in the pituitary are:
  • Prolactinomas - a benign tumour (adenoma) that produces excess prolactin.
Cushing's disease - an ACTH producing adenoma.

HYPOPITUITARY AND PITUITARY REPLACEMENT HORMONES What is pituitary? What hormones does the pituitary control? What causes hypopituitarism?. How would you feel if you were hypopituitary? ... For further information why not contact; What is pituitary? It is a small pea size gland situated in a hollow bony pouch, at the base of the brain, at the back of the bridge of the nose. It is the master gland of the endocrine system and controls the functions of most of the other endocrine glands. What hormones does the pituitary control? Thyroid Hormone (TSH) The pituitary produces TSH which circulates to the thyroid stimulating this gland in your neck to make and release thyroid hormones called Thyroxine and Tri-iodothyronine Adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH). This hormone stimulate the adrenal glands (small endocrine glands situated on the top of your kidneys) to produce cortisol. This is a steroid hormone which is essential for the everyday activities and health. Lack of cortisol causes severe fatigue and lack of appetite with weight loss. Growth Hormone (GH) This has effects on the various tissue of the body. In children, it is essential to reach the normal growth. In adult, it appears to maintain normal energy levels and to keep body tissue such a muscle and bones strong and healthy.

Pituitary and TSH
Definition: Hypopituitarism is a condition caused by low levels of pituitary hormones. Alternative Names: Pituitary insufficiency Causes And Risk: The pituitary gland is a small structure that is located just below the brain. It is attached by a stalk to the hypothalamus , the area of the brain that controls its function. The hormones secreted by the pituitary and their functions are:
  • growth hormone (GH), which stimulates growth of tissues and bone thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which stimulates the thyroid gland to secrete hormones that affect body metabolism adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which stimulates the adrenal gland to secrete cortisol which helps to maintain blood pressure prolactin , which stimulates female breast development and milk production luteinizing hormone (LH), which controls sexual function in males and females

Question Posted By: Julie on Monday, November 15, 1999
I really hope that you can help me. I'm a student and I'm doing a case study about a patient but I'm not completely sure about the diagnosis.
Symptoms:
-18 yr old male
-slow onset of puberty
-short stature
-slightly obese
-frequent headaches -basal plasma gonadotropins low for low plasma testosterone -X-ray showed enlarged pituitary fossa -prolactin levels high -follicle stimulating hormones low -synacthen test showed very slight increase in cortisol -triple function test showed increase in glucose, decrease in thyroid releasing hormone. I think that it's hypopituitarism but I'm not sure. Could it also be addison's disease? Thank you ever so much for your help!
