HYPOPARATHYROIDISM
Too little parathyroid hormone production
Hypoparathyroidism is the combination of symptoms due to inadequate parathyroid hormone production. This is a VERY rare condition, and most commonly occurs because of damage or removal of parathyroid glands at the time of parathyroid or thyroid surgery. If this is the first parathyroid page you have read from our site, we strongly recommend that you read our introduction to the parathyroid gland first! Remember, hyperparathyroidism is much more common than hypoparathyroidism. Hypoparathyroidism is the state of decreased secretion or activity of parathyroid hormone (PTH). This leads to decreased blood levels of calcium (hypocalcemia) and increased levels of blood phosphorus (hyperphosphatemia). Symptoms can range from quite mild (tingling in the hands, fingers, and around the mouth) to more severe forms of muscle cramps leading all the way to tetany (severe muscle cramping of the entire body), and convulsions (this is very rare!). Parathyroid gland insufficiency is quite rare, but it can occur in several well defined ways. The most common cause of hypoparathyroidism is the loss of active parathyroid tissue following thyroid or parathyroid surgery. More rare is a defect present at birth (congenital) where a person is born without parathyroid glands. Occasionally, the specific cause of hypoparathyroidism cannot be determined.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a hormone produced by the parathyroid glands that helps regulate calcium and phophate levels in the blood. The effects of PTH are seen in several body systems including the skeletal, gastrointestinal, renal (kidney), muscular, and central nervous system In pseudohypoparathyroidism, there is an adequate amount of PTH but the body cannot respond to it. The body is "resistant" to the effects of PTH. As a result, a picture very similar to hypoparathyroidism develops with low calcium levels in the blood and high phophate levels. This results in the characteristic symptoms which are generally first seen in childhood.

  • What Is It? Symptoms Diagnosis Expected Duration ... Additional Info
  • What Is It? Hypoparathyroidism is a rare disorder in which the body produces too little or no parathyroid hormone. This hormone, together with vitamin D and another hormone called calcitonin, regulates the amount of calcium in the blood. Hypoparathyroidism can result in an abnormally low level of calcium in the blood, called hypocalcemia.

Supporting Research There are four parathyroid glands, located near each of the two lobes of the thyroid gland. The parathyroids produce parathyroid hormones that regulate blood levels of calcium necessary for strong bones and teeth, nerve function, and blood clotting. Hypoparathyroidism is a rare disorder associated with insufficient production of parathyroid hormone, the inability to make a usable form of parathyroid hormone, or the inability of kidneys and bones to respond to parathyroid hormone production. A deficiency of parathyroid hormone lowers blood calcium levels and raises phosphate levels. Hypoparathyroidism either may be inherited or acquired; the acquired form usually results from parathyroid surgery or an underlying disorder, such as cancer or neck trauma. Signs and Symptoms Hypoparathyroidism is often accompanied by the following signs and symptoms:
    • Muscle spasm or cramping, typically in hands or feet
