Addison's disease is an endocrine or hormonal disorder that occurs in all age groups and afflicts men and women equally. The disease is characterized by weight loss, muscle weakness, fatigue, low blood pressure, and sometimes darkening of the skin in both exposed and nonexposed parts of the body. Addison's disease occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough of the hormone cortisol and, in some cases, the hormone aldosterone. The disease is also called adrenal insufficiency, or hypocortisolism. Cortisol is normally produced by the adrenal glands, located just above the kidneys. It belongs to a class of hormones called glucocorticoids, which affect almost every organ and tissue in the body. Scientists think that cortisol has possibly hundreds of effects in the body. Cortisol's most important job is to help the body respond to stress. Among its other vital tasks, cortisol
  • helps maintain blood pressure and cardiovascular function helps slow the immune system's inflammatory response helps balance the effects of insulin in breaking down sugar for energy helps regulate the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats

The Biology of Violence Serotonin, Alcoholism, Hypoglycemia By Paul Rossby
This information or any portion may not be copied or disseminated in any form or by any means or downloaded or stored in an electronic database or retrieval system without the express written consent of the American Bar Association. An increasing body of scientific evidence, collected over the last 20 years, indicates that there is a link between low levels of the brain chemical serotonin and deficient impulse control leading to intermittent explosive disorder, pyromania, suicide, and severe unrestrained aggression (rage). Furthermore, the evidence indicates a connection between low serotonin activity and "type-2" alcoholism. Type-2 alcoholism is an exclusively male disorder that is frequently passed on from fathers to sons and is characterized by the early onset of alcohol consumption and aggressive/violent behavior.
Finally a tendency towards hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is commonly found in impulsively violent offenders.

Food and insulin release Alternative names Return to top Insulin shock; Low blood sugar Definition Return to top Hypoglycemia occurs when your body's blood sugar, or glucose, is abnormally low. The term insulin shock is used to describe severe hypoglycemia that results in unconsciousness Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Hypoglycemia results when your body's glucose is used up too rapidly, when glucose is released into the bloodstream more slowly than is needed by your body, or when excessive insulin is released into the bloodstream. Insulin is a hormone that reduces blood glucose. It is produced by the pancreas in response to increased glucose levels in the blood.
Hypoglycemia is relatively common in diabetics. It occurs when too much insulin or oral antidiabetic medication is taken, not enough food is eaten, or from a sudden increase in the amount of exercise without an increase in food intake.
Relative hypoglycemia, where a newborn's blood glucose is low, is fairly common. Severe hypoglycemia may occur in an infant born to a woman with diabetes or gestational diabetes. In these cases, the child is referred to as an IDM for "infant of diabetic mother."

How Food Affects Your Blood Glucose
Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, what, when, and how much you eat all affect your blood glucose. Blood glucose is the main sugar found in the blood and the body's main source of energy. If you have diabetes (or impaired glucose tolerance), your blood glucose can go too high if you eat too much. If your blood glucose goes too high, you can get sick. Your blood glucose can also go too high or drop too low if you don't take the right amount of diabetes medicine. If your blood glucose stays high too much of the time, you can get heart, eye, foot, kidney, and other problems. You can also have problems if your blood glucose gets too low (hypoglycemia). Keeping your blood glucose at a healthy level will prevent or slow down diabetes problems. Ask your doctor or diabetes teacher what a healthy blood glucose level is for you.

vet@dog Hypoglycemia in toy breed puppies Hypoglycemia tends to be a problem seen most often in toy breed puppies. Hypoglycemia is the medical term for low blood sugar. In small breed puppies from post-weaning to 4 month of age, the most common form of hypoglycemia is called Transient Juvenile Hypoglycemia: "Transient" because the symptoms can be reversed by eating; "Juvenile" because it is seen in young individuals.
Background on blood sugar:
How are small breeds different?
Are there other causes of Hypoglycemia in puppies?

There are numerous other causes of hypoglycemia in puppies, but they are much less common. It is important to distinguish between whether the signs of hypoglycemia occur with fasting or just following a meal. Some problems are caused by liver problems, such as a defect involving an abnormal blood vessel shunt (a "detour," of sorts) around the liver, and some are caused by hereditary metabolic defects, hormone defects and deficiencies, and severe bacterial infections. All of these are serious problems that need to be diagnosed as soon as possible. More information...

R esearch: H ypoglycemia is a major complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus, and is the predominant limiting factor in the improvement of glycemic control. In type 1 diabetes, hypoglycemia arises from the interplay of excess insulin and deficient counterregulation. Leptin per se or in combination with insulin treatment may normalize the basal HPA activity and the counterregulatory. Furthermore, leptin’s ability to increase insulin sensitivity can lead to a decrease in exogenous insulin, thus minimizing the possibility of antecedent hypoglycemia and the impaired counterregulatory responses to acute hypoglycemia in Type I diabetes. I have shown that leptin normalization without insulin treatment can increase HPA activity and epinephrine (EPI) release while decreasing norepinephrine levels in STZ-diabetic rats. Most interestingly, following leptin normalization STZ-diabetic rats demonstrated a decreased diabetes-associated hyperphagia.

Hypoglycemia Diet Purpose
Hypoglycemia is the term for a blood glucose level that is lower than normal. When foods are digested in the body, they are broken down into many nutrients. These nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream to be used in performing various body functions. One of these nutrients is glucose, a sugar that provides fuel to the body. The process that regulates the amount of sugar in the blood is complex. Adrenaline is a part of this complicated process. Everyone has experienced a rush of adrenaline at some time that "love-at-first-sight" feeling, or the pounding heart after narrowly escaping an accident. Adrenaline is produced by the adrenal glands located on top of the kidneys. The sudden release of adrenaline is what causes the symptoms of hypoglycemia apprehension, hunger, sweating, rapid heartbeat, and faintness. Nutrition Facts
Following a hypoglycemia diet gives the body all the calories, protein, minerals, and vitamins necessary to meet the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for healthy adults. Special Considerations
  • Choose high fiber foods. Fiber is the indigestible part of plants. Insoluble fiber, such as wheat bran, does not dissolve in water. It adds bulk to the stool and causes it to pass through the intestine more quickly. Soluble fiber does dissolve in water, forming a sticky gel. It is found in the fibrous coatings of foods such as legumes, oat products, and pectin found in fruit. Soluble fiber delays stomach emptying, digestion, and absorption of glucose. Therefore, it helps to prevent hypoglycemia symptoms between meals. When making fruit choices, choose whole fresh fruits or those canned without added sugar instead of fruit juice. The added fiber helps to slow down the absorption of sugar.

Hypoglycemia Hypoglycemia means low blood sugar. This brochure is intended to increase knowledge about reactive hypoglycemia and to give suggestions on its control. What is reactive hypoglycemia?
Reactive hypoglycemia can occur when blood glucose falls, resources of glucose from the liver are exhausted and an individual chooses not to eat. Gradually the body adjusts to this situation by using muscle protein to feed glucose to brain cells and fat to fuel the other body cells. But before this adjustment takes place an individual may experience symptoms of glucose deprivation to the brain resulting in symptoms such as: anxiety, hunger, dizziness, weakness, shaking muscles and racing heart. Because these symptoms are common to many conditions a health care provider should be consulted to assess an individual's specific symptoms and concerns. Who does reactive hypoglycemia effect? Reactive hypoglycemia occurs in about 2-3 out of every 10 young women, more often in obese women and less often in people over age 45. While most people experience low blood glucose levels at times, if the symptoms are severe or ongoing it is important to learn to eat promptly and properly with a balanced meal or snack. Reactive hypoglycemia does not lead to more severe conditions.
