Hyperthyroidism
What is hyperthyroidism?
Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which there is an excessive amount of thyroid hormones circulating in the blood because of an overactive thyroid gland. ("Hyper" means "over" in Greek). Thyrotoxicosis is a term that refers to a toxic condition that is caused by an excess of thyroid hormones from any cause. Thyrotoxicosis can be caused by an excessive intake of thyroid hormone and inflammation of the thyroid gland. Because both physicians and patients often use these words interchangeably, we will take some liberty by using the term "hyperthyroidism" throughout this article. What are thyroid hormones?
Thyroid hormones are produced by the thyroid gland. This gland is located in the lower part of the neck, below the Adam's apple. The gland wraps around the windpipe (trachea) and has a shape that is similar to a butterfly formed by two wings (lobes) and attached by a middle part (isthmus).
The thyroid gland incorporates iodine (mostly available from the diet in foods such as seafood, bread, and salt) and uses it to produce thyroid hormones. The two most important thyroid hormones are thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) representing 99.9% and 0.1% of thyroid hormones respectively. The hormone with the most biological activity is actually T3. Once released from the thyroid gland into the blood, a large amount of T4 is converted to T3 - the active hormone that affects the metabolism of cells.

W elcome to the Thyroid Federation International Home Page. Through this site we plan to keep you informed of the activities of our growing organization and the development of existing and future thyroid member organizations in the world. The Thyroid Federation International first convened in Toronto at the 11th International Thyroid Congress in September 1995. The vision of a world thyroid organization to deal with the problems of thyroid disease in a global perspective was first advocated by Diana Meltzer Abramsky, C.M., B.A. who in 1980 founded the Thyroid Foundation of Canada in Kingston, Ontario Canada - the first lay thyroid organization in the world. Since then, the idea has received enthusiastic support and leadership from Dr. Lawrence C. Wood of the Thyroid Foundation of America, the Federation's first president. Starting from a base of six member organizations, the Federation has grown to include thyroid organizations in many parts of the world, including Europe, North America, Australia and Japan. Our main objective is to assist all those interested to start a thyroid patient organization in their country or locale. For more information see:

In the early stages of this disorder, a person may have virtually no symptoms but laboratory tests may show a suppressed (below normal) TSH. Thyroid stimulating hormone, as discussed above, is the most sensitive test in diagnosing thyroid disorders. As the hyperthyroidism becomes more severe, the following symptoms may be present. Not all of these symptoms are necessarily present in individual patients. Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism: Fatigue Nervousness Sleep Problems Heat intolerance Silky hair Smooth Skin Hair loss Brittle nails Anxiety Swelling Muscle weakness Palpitations Rapid Heart Rate Difficulty Swallowing Eye Irritation Frequent Bowel Movements Change in Menstrual Periods Eye Protrusion WHY DO PEOPLE BECOME HYPERTHYROID?

Hyperthyroid Eye Disease Graves' disease may be associated with particular eye changes. The eye changes are called hyperthyroid eye disease and occur in about 30 percent of people with Graves' disease. These changes are visible as protruding eyes. There is no relationship between the appearance of eye changes and the severity of the hyperthyroidism. There is increased risk for infection and visual problems in persons with severe hyperthyroid eye disease. Eye disease is most likely to progress in people who fit a certain profile. This includes those:
  • Whose hyperthyroidism is not promptly corrected and controlled Whose thyroid hormone level is not within normal limits Who smoke cigarettes
The autoimmune process that causes hyperthyroid eye disease is poorly understood. Doctors do understand that there is swelling of tissues behind the eyeball, decreased range of motion of the muscles around the eyeball, and retraction (a pulling back) of the eyelids. Common symptoms include pain, excessive tearing, increased sensitivity to light, blurred vision, double vision, or protrusion of the eyes from the face.

General Hyperthyroid Disorder Information
Hyperthyroidism, also called thyrotoxicosis or Grave's Disease, is an over production of thyroid hormone. The hormones produced by the thyroid controls the body’s temperature, ability to burn calories, and energy usage. An over production of these hormones is a hyperthyroid condition, while an underproduction creates a hypothyroid condition. An overproduction of these hormons causes the body to be in an overactive metabolic state, thus speeding up the body's processes. It is estimated that hyperthyroidism affects mostly women. One in eight women may develop a thyroid condition at some time in their life usually between the ages of 30 and 50.

Possible Symptoms for Hyperthyroid Disorder
A blood test that measures the levels of various thyroid hormones or hormones from the pituitary gland (TSH) that stimulate the thyroid. A consistently high body temperature reading may also indicate an over active thyroid. Hyperthyroidism may be the cause of many different recurring ailments or conditions. The following are possible symptoms of an over active thyroid.

Molly b.'s Goiter and Hyperthyroid Page 1 I hope the following information will be of help to anyone who has a hyperthyroid condition.
Hyperthyroid disorders don't always require the same treatment that I had.
Multinodular goiter is treated differently than Graves' Disease - I had no medication options. Molly b.
December, 2003 May 1997: I went to a doctor about feeling faint, dry eyes and weight loss. A series of blood tests showed that I was hyperthyroid. An appointment with a specialist was scheduled for October. I was given a prescription for Ativan, to take as needed, for 'anxiety attacks' which were really just rapid heartbeat reactions caused by the hyperthyroid symptoms. Five months is a very long time to be hyperthyroid with no treatment. Long term untreated hyperthyroidism can result in heart damage and more. If you have a hyperthyroid condition, don't delay getting it treated. I wouldn't have waited 5 months, if I'd had a choice. (This is what health 'cutbacks' do.)
